Welcome to The Grand, York's first and only AA five-star rated hotel. This stunning hotel opened in May 2010 following the extensive refurbishment of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters – one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings. Originally constructed in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for what was then one of the most powerful public companies in the country, today it is the region’s leading luxury hotel and has established a global reputation for its first-class service, stylish bedrooms and unique historic atmosphere. Following a £15 million refurbishment in 2017, The Grand now boasts 207 individually designed bedrooms, a beautiful spa to relax, a destination restaurant, a cocktail bar and meeting & event spaces. There is something for everybody to enjoy - we look forward to welcoming you soon!

Hotel's Favourite

In my years, I have stayed in scores of hotels all over the world. The Grand, York, England, is the only one I went back to for itself -- the hotel was the destination. The staff go out of their way for you. They are empowered to upgrade rooms, grant favours, and even send little gifts to your room, just because. They seek criticism and sincerely appreciate feedback.

You are efficiently checked in at a desk, in comfort. The reading room is an oasis of leisure. English High Tea is generous, and at dinner, the chef works in full view of guests, a show by itself.

Everything, from the uniformed doormen to the privacy of the bar, to the room amenities and the dining options, overflows with dignified Old World charm and warm service.

Last July, I asked the bar tender what Yuletide season was like here, and she described the special menus, decor, scents, and flavors here at Christmas.

So here I was, back in Christmas week, cherishing every hour of my second stay at The Grand, York.

I remember specific good experiences at some hotels worldwide - big ones and small ones, in New York, Chicago, Bangkok, London, Buenos Aires, Prague, Normandy and even Moscow. What I cherished most about them and what really stands out at The Grand in York is the impeccable service and genuine effort of the staff.

This would not be my last visit here. It's a great break in the journey if you're traveling by train from London to Scotland, and York is a historically significant destination anyway.

I get no compensation for this brief review, nor was I asked to do it.

We stayed in this hotel for 1 night and couldn’t fault a thing.
Upon arrival we had our temperatures taken and was seated in a room until we could check in and we were required to wear a mask around the hotel. All the staff we encountered were professional, friendly and couldn’t do enough to help you
The hotel itself is indeed very Grand(!)
We stayed in a Classic room on the 3rd floor in what seemed to be a newly added part of the hotel, the room and bathroom were HUGE! We were provided with a welcome pack containing masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. The room was really quiet, I don’t think I heard anyone at any point yet the hotel seemed to be at full capacity.
Handy location for the train station and a 10 min walk from town
At breakfast we were seated and provided with table service ordering from a reduced menu, again the service we received was excellent and the food was delicious.
Checking out could be done from the room using an app on the TV.

We booked weeks in advance and paid 50% of what the room was priced at on the night.
We will certainly stay here again and highly recommend this hotel.
We stayed at the NCP across the road using an offer that was running at the time of £5 for 24 hours parking.

Stayed here for one night recently with my boyfriend and we couldn't fault a single thing. It was our first time staying in York so we wanted a nice central hotel and that is exactly what we got. We parked at the NCP round the corner as the valet parking wasn't available which cost £24 for 24 hours. We had a lovely lady called Jessica checking us in who was very friendly and polite and gave us a few reccomendations of nice bars in the area. As the hotel wasn't that busy we had the option of stayed in an older classic room or a newly refurbished room, we chose the new room and it was beautiful. The bed was huge and really comfy and the bathroom was stunning with a bath and shower, we also received a covid pack on the bed which consisted of face masks, wipes and a small antibacterial hand gel which we thought was a nice touch (we have just also stayed in a luxury hotel in the Lakes and did not receive anything like this) The location of this hotel is just perfect, everything is within a 10 minute walk which was perfect for us. Will definitely stay here again when we come to York.

The hotel had all the advertised covid measures - plenty of hand sanitiser and plastic screens, and staff wore masks/face shields.

The front desk staff was exceptional - she was extremely professional and polite when she looked for my booking (somehow my first and last names were jumbled when Booking.com sent through the booking), and when I returned to the hotel after 3pm to get my room keys, she saw me and retrieved the keys for me immediately and saved me queueing.

The executive double room was spotless and as advertised. I didn't ask for my room to be serviced every day, but that wasn't an issue as a huge bag of supplies was left outside my room each morning. It included towels, loo roll, toiletries, tea/coffee, milk and shortbread. The armchairs in the room were so comfortable too, and together with the extensive selection of TV/radio channels it was difficult to leave my room sometimes. The bathtub was marvellous, it was big enough for a relaxing soak and I especially love that it was in a separate room from the shower and the loo.

Breakfast was included in my room rate and it was table service only. The waiting staff was friendly and polite, but there didn't seem to be enough of them and they were hurrying between tables and the open kitchen. There was a short wait after I was seated each morning before someone came to take my order. I was on holiday so I didn't mind the wait, but I suspect those travelling on business might expect a more speedy service. The food was as expected, though the Yorkshire breakfast was noticeably better than the eggs Benedict.

I ordered room service twice during my stay. Due to Covid, the tray charge was waived which was a nice touch. The food was packaged well and even the fries weren't soggy when they reached me. The Yorkshire pudding wrap was most excellent and definitely value for money, considering its size.

Check out was speedy. No issues at all.

I didn't use the spa or the pool during my stay, but I do hope fo return to the Grand when things return to a new normal post-Covid and try the pool.

We visited The Grand for our 1st Wedding Anniversary and we were not disappointed. The building is fabulous. When we arrived our temperature was taken and we were led into a room to be booked in. All social distancing and government guidelines were followed from hand sanitiser to face masks and screens etc. Our check in was very smooth although they had our booking down for £10.00 more than we'd actually booked it for, however once I showed the young man our booking he quickly and apologetically changed this for us. We were given our key cards and directed to our room where I'd arranged for some chocolate covered strawberries to be, they were delicious. The room wss a classic room located in the main building and was a fantastic size. The bed was very comfortable and the bath is huge. Due to the current covid situation there are no maids visiting your room Unless requested, we did request for out plate to be taken out and some more towels and water to be left whilst we were out though and this was done without any problems, our towels and more toiletries etc. Were there all in a bag waiting for us when we got back.
It is very quiet at night too so you will have a perfect night's sleep.
We had a drink in the bar and charged the drinks to our room before going out for the evening and the staff were very polite and helpful.
However the day later when I tried to check out on the TV in our room they had charged for 4 drinks and not 2 therefore we went to check out at the reception desk. This again was quickly rectified. We left our luggage at the hotel where it was safely locked away until we returned later that day to collect before going for our train. This hotel is beautiful and even though there were a few little glitches it did not spoil our stay and we have already booked another stay.
Thankyou for a lovely stay.

We have just checked out of The Grand after a one night stay in a double executive room.

The booking process was easy, and I thought that the room descriptions were accurate and simple. The hotel sent me an email approximately 7 days before my stay, asking for more details about my trip. This allowed me to personalise my stay and request certain items (such as a walk in shower). All of my emails were promptly replied to. I also booked us an hour in the spa.

The checking in process was simple with a one way system at the door. Our room wasn’t ready when we arrived (1300), but staff were happy to store our bags. They called me at 1400 to let me know that our room was ready.

Check in time is 1500
Check our time is 1100

We booked an hour in the spa to use the facilities, I was not charged extra for this. We were provided a robe and slippers in our room. The sauna and the steam room were not open due to COVID, so we were only able to use the pool and jacuzzi. This didn’t bother us, and we enjoyed using the facilities. We had an hours slot. The jacuzzi was busy due to only one household being allowed in at a time, but because we got there at the beginning of our slot we were able to enjoy 10 minutes before allowing someone else to do the same. Poolside was very clean, and drinking water was readily available.

Our room was fantastic. It was immaculate. The bed was comfy, and the bathroom was spectacular. I got the walk-in shower that I requested. The room was quiet, we didn’t not hear anyone in other rooms or in the corridor at all. The WiFi was good quality with a very strong signal.

We ordered room service that arrived about 20 minutes after we called for it. The food was very good and as described. I was not charged extra for ordering room service.

All the staff that we spoke with were friendly and knowledgeable.

One way systems were in place throughout the hotel. Masks and hand gel were readily available, we even had some left I our room.

The breakfast this morning was delicious, and they were happy to accommodate special requests for how we like our breakfast cooked.

Overall we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Grand, and I would definitely return in the future.

Booked to stay here for 2 nights for our Silver Wedding Anniversary. The hotel is conveniently located for a quick walk into the city centre and river. There is an NCP car park (Tanner Row) literally 2 minutes from the hotel ... £52 for 48 hours but that seems to be the norm for parking in the area. All staff are very pleasant and helpful and checking in was done quick and efficiently. Our room (booked standard double) was spacious and clean and it was nice and quiet. We were touched by the anniversary greeting and chocolates that had been left in our room. Breakfast was lovely and kept us full until way past lunchtime! The COVID-19 care package left in the room shows their commitment to customers safety and there were hand sanitizers dotted about all over the hotel. I would definitely return to stay at The Grand again.

We booked here to celebrate my brother's 21st birthday and there was a lovely little plate of chocolates waiting in the room. The facilities across the hotel are great and most the staff are very friendly. However we would not book here again. For a 5 star hotel we were very let down. The bathroom and one bath towel weren't clean and upon checking under the bed to check out just we found a sock from the previous occupant.... We did speak to guest relations about the bathroom issue but it took 2 visits from house keeping to actually get the room clean; the first time they simply folded the towels. Minor issues like this occurred throughout our stay like receiving a cold starter, no check backs, items missing off meals etc. We were given a complimentary breakfast with was generous but these issues sort of spoiled the birthday weekend and even with that we don't feel like we had value for money.
On a positive note I must say that the service from Wayne (doorman) and Siobahn (restaurant) was exceptional.

Second visit to the Grand. We came four years ago for a few nights and loved it. It’s a great hotel, nicely done and super location. The door men are charming and the concierge lovely and efficient. Sadly the down to earth charm of the front door service is lost once you get to the reception desk. I think £35 valet per night is reasonable, given the cost of the close by NCP. However, we were looking forward to spending our check out day doing a few things in York before heading off. We were told the car park that we had been charged £70 for the 2 nights could only be used till 12pm check out. We explained we’d like to have lunch and then go at 2pm. The robot behind the reception desk explained that for £10 extra you can stay till 6pm. What 5* hotel doesn’t use its discretion to accommodate their guests needs, rather than constantly trying to grab extra cash from us? On that note, we entered the bar at 11:45pm the night before, after our function finished, only to be told the bar was closed, even though it was busy. When did hotels stop their guests having drinks in the bar as if running their establishment like a pub? No bother, as we then asked if we could order a glass from room service and was told yes...for a £5 charge. Outrageous. You are a hotel! And a 5* one at that. Your role is to provide an establishment for your guests to feel at home. Your policy of charging extra for basic hospitality just makes you look cheap. To end on a positive note, the hand sanitisers amid Coronavirus was a classy touch! Love York.

Good evening. Greetings from The Grand. Thank you for choosing to stay with us and submitting your feedback. We are pleased to read that your enjoyed the wonderful welcome form our Concierge/ Door team, and our wonderful hotel in a superb location. It is disappointing to read that your expectations were not fully reached this time around and that you felt the service had lowered. We are sorry for any disappointment caused and we will most certainly communicate all your feedback with the relevant departments. My wife and I have just enjoyed a 3 night stay at this wonderful hotel in the fabulous city of York.
After our first stay here in September 2020 we intended to return as soon as possible (Covid permitting of course!) and the hotel staff really pulled out all the stops for us and also for other guests who we met during our stay.
We decided to stay in one of the recently refurbished rooms in the new wing of the hotel ('The Roman House') and our room was spotlessly clean. We opted for the daily room refresh (optional during the current time) and each day the room was fully cleansed, the bathroom refreshed with various 'Moulton Brown' products.
The staff here are all exceptional really but I would like to extend our thanks particularly to Susanne and Trevor whose service during the breakfast was wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and Susanne was always happy to chat and offer advice on our daily visits around the location.
The high standard of cleanliness and professionalism of the staff displayed at the hotel is something which we experienced during our stay last September and, if anything, they have since' gone the extra mile' to ensure guest experience is uppermost.
There is parking outside of the hotel or in the nearby NCP car park and at all times the door staff were polite, careful, attentive and utterly professional and I would like to thank Rob and Wayne particularly who were on hand at all times on the main door.
The breakfast menu is comprehensive and all food was cooked individually, served fresh and hot tot the taste and catered for all allergies.
Niki and Kim at reception were very helpful and I wish to pass our thanks on them also please.
We have already booked our next stay in the coming months and I highly recommend this hotel to you as it truly delivers in providing an outstanding experience - this is even more commendable in my view bearing in mind the current health climate that we all currently find ourselves in.
Thank you all so very much for such an enjoyable stay!
