Located in the Mickelgate Ward of York overlooking York Racecourse and the Knavesmire Strays lies The Elmbank Hotel, a historical 19th century townhouse that has been elegantly restored to offer a boutique guest experience in the heart of the city. Our interior has been tastefully rejuvenated to offer a harmonious blend of old and new features, seamlessly complemented by plush, colourful interiors, all inspired by Art Nouveau patterns and the equestrian roots of the city to which it calls home.

We stayed for just one night between Christmas and New Year’s Dec ‘21. Booked the loft/attic room in the Lodge (across the road from main building). Absolutely perfect for a family. Short walk to Mickelgate, with restaurants and a little grocery on the way, no need for taxis. Huge rooms. I mean HUGE. I’ve had apartments smaller than this. Gorgeous clawfoot tub. Great separate shower. Comfy beds. Tons of space, would be great for a longer stay so everyone can spread out a bit. Only drawbacks to note are 1) we didn’t find any hanging space for clothes (but we might have missed it somewhere!) and 2) this room is at the top of several flights of stairs, so it wouldn’t be suitable for anyone with mobility issues or with smaller kids, as the hallway opens to the stairwell in the apartment (actual room door is at the bottom of the stairs), so would be a safety issue with little kids. Staff was friendly and helpful. 10/10 would book again!

I think the other reviews are unfair. We stayed with the groupon deal and we’re really impressed. We try to get away once a month and Elmbank exceeded our expectations. The decor is fantastic and the details are fabulous. From checking in and greeted by Sarah who was warm and welcoming to a friendly bar manager who was juggling the bar and restaurant. The room was small but cosy with a huge bed and decorated beautifully. The food was first class and delivered quickly to a high standard. Yes you have to pay £10 to park which we haven’t done before and you have to book your evening meal and breakfast on arrival but the whole process is quick and organised. Don’t be put off by some of the reviews, we are picky and have stayed in some questionable hotels, Elmbank is a lovely place and we throughly enjoyed it and will be back

Paid for a package which included a 3 course meal, 50% of the options (only 6 for each course) we’re actually included the rest required a £3-8 overhead, even the food which you paid the overhead for was incredibly disappointing, trying to be posh but quite honestly substandard, very unhappy, would much rather had got food at a local pub

Had booked via a DBB Groupon voucher for a break between Christmas and New Year. We added extra night to it on bed and breakfast basis. What a welcome we received from Ruth the Receptionist and was exceptionally helpful We did have a superior room which was lovely with the only comment really was how cold the bathroom was as all tiled and no heating in it but facilities within the room were fab for a 3 star hotel…fridge hairdryer iron and board tea coffee making facilities and the roll top bath or option of a huge walk in rain shower was above what expected! The breakfast was extensive and all the staff were so friendly within the restaurant area…..for our inclusive dinner we were amazed at the choice on the menu and both the presentation and food itself was over and above what we expected so certainly would recommend the restaurant to eat in and so glad we did! This hotel certainly is basic on first appearances upon entering but once we viewed the room the service of staff and quality of the food we certainly think deserves better reviews and it is an ideal location for visiting York city centre on foot or main bus route.

First time we visited Got there early ish, on New Years Eve, and managed to get a parking space near reception. Booking in very easy, and very covid secure What a characteristic building Lovely bedroom Went down to the NYE gala, again very covid safe, shown to our table in the function room and a glass of champagne and canapés given The meal was lovely, presented and cooked to perfection The room itself was overly crowded and throughout we all felt safe The disco was in another anti-room which made the whole event fantastic Again a glass of fizz given at midnight and after a final dance, to bed The breakfast again was just what you’d expect, I went for the full Yorkshire breakfast Even offered a glass of bucksfizz All in all a great NYE To all the staff Well Done, stay safe
