This is a very nice hotel in York. It’s set in a courtyard right off Lendal. The location is within walking distance of the train station and many attractions and dining options.

We had a floor on the top level of the main building. There was no lift and some of the corridors were narrow, but a woman behind the register helped us with our luggage. (Also note that the main desk is on the first floor, up a flight of stairs from the courtyard.) Our room was quite large and comfortably, if not extravagantly, furnished. The bathroom was equally large and included a tub with a showerhead.

Our room rate included breakfast, which was served in the restaurant on the ground floor. There was a small selection of food available as a continental option, and there were also traditional hot plate options which were delicious.

Our visit was during the holiday season, so the entire city was quiet busy, but at night our room was quiet-no issues with noise. Likewise, we felt no issues with walking around the area after dark. The neighborhood is safe.

First discovered the Judges Lodging for dinner on a previous trip to York. Decided then it was to be our destination for the next trip. We were not disappointed!! Checking in during these difficult times was very efficiently done with all social
distancing and sanitising well organised. The rooms where very well appointed and beautifully decorated..... amenities were given at reception due to the current situation... plus fresh milk in a thermos - excellent idea!! The towels in the bathroom were so soft and fluffy, water hot, beds very comfortable. We will definitely book again. All the staff are friendly and extremely accommodating, Elliot looked after us wonderfully!!

Home from home with period styling and a little luxury 💖 Our second trip and it has been refurbished making the rooms even lovelier than before. We like it here because the location is excellent right in the middle of the City close to all shops, bars & restaurants, but it also retains a smaller more homely familiar vibe. Having also stayed at the Principal we have to say we like the more intimate nature of the Judges Lodging. Plus the location is better!
We stayed in room 3 - a superior room. It has a good Minster view room! Fabulous bed, spacious, gorgeous decor with a quirky design led twist! Only negatives were lack of accessible plug sockets for charging, and please make bathrooms more interesting - so bland in contrast with the wonderful room decor.
Communal areas all very nice, very polite young staff and awesome breakfast in the cellar xx it remains one of our favourites and we hope to come back to explore more of the newly decorated rooms in the future. Thanks again for a lovely home from home for the night 😊💖

On entering the hotel we read a message that we had to find a member of staff to book us in, and would be found down in the Cellar Bar. Without any directions I ended up in the cleaners storage room. After wandering around I did find a member of staff to book us in. We found our room after climbing a very long winding staircase with our cases in hand on the 3rd floor as they did not have a lift. At both 77 this was no easy task. The room door was antique and the lock was difficult to undo as it used a conventual deadlock and was very stiff. The room was well furnished with an ensuite. The room was very overheated with no way of control. We tried to open the windows but only one would do so for a few inches and the other would keep sliding shut. The bathroom was well fitted out with a good sized shower, jacuzzi, washbasin and w.c with a cheap seat that was ready to fall apart.
We had a light meal in the Cellar Bar with a loud recording of a high pitched singing artist drowning out any conversation but after a request to turn it down it was, but by a token amount in which case we moved into another area with our plates were it was thankfully less irritating.
The next morning we had breakfast and the same recordings were loud and clear! Our breakfast order was taken which included toast and marmalade by a lovely member of staff but unfortunately it all arrived on the same plate. Bacon ,scrambled eggs, tomatoes and the toast laying alongside the eggs which made it soft. You get one cup of coffee delivered and by the time I had eaten my breakfast it was cold. The staff were having to go back to the kitchens to supply basics like salt, pepper, a plate to put the toast on, butter etc. I think the hotel has very high grade staff but are let down by the lack of high level training. I found that it is not common knowledge how to set out a breakfast table there. For a five star, it is sadly lacking in experienced well trained staff. It is more suited to a burger bar as the service is very lumpy and casual although very polite.
We would not go back.

Recently stayed at the Judge’s Lodging for a short break. The hotel is an easy walk from the train station, or, if driving, parking is available close by in Marygate car park. The hotel is situated in a lovely old building. Check in was quick and simple, our room was spacious and well furnished, although the door was a little difficult to open/close, but that was mainly due to the age of the building which added to the character of the place, maybe not for everyone, but we liked it. The room had Tea/coffee facilities, large flatscreen TV and radio. The bathroom was clean and well appointed with decent toiletries and good towels. The Bed was comfy, although the pillows were a little too soft for me.
There was with an outdoor terrace and cellar bar. All the staff we came in to contact with were attentive and housekeeping were equally efficient. Each morning the Breakfast choice was excellent with everything cooked to order, it really set us up for the rest of the day.!
For us, the only minor point was the occasional smell of cooking wafting up from the kitchen and a bit of noise from the terrace, given the hot weather we’ve recently had the room windows remained open for the duration of our stay, but neither the smells or the noise were enough to warrant closing them.!
Overall, a great little hotel and our stay was excellent. If you’re planning a short break to York, stay at the Judge’s Lodging, it offers good accommodation and is ideally located in the City, close to everything York has to offer.

We've just come back from a stay here, it was ok and for a two night stay was adequate for our needs but we both decided we'd never stay here again for two reasons. The room we stayed in (room 19 - the Sage room) was clean, a little cramped but didn't bother us and had everything we needed. Milk for tea was given to us in a little flask and we were told to put a sign on the door handle for the next day if we wanted more. Our first night was interrupted from about 10pm when it sounded like large amounts of glass bottles were thrown into bins from what we thought was the actual hotel. it carried on for a few hours and happened on our second night too so didn't get a very good sleep even though the bed was comfy. The next day we put our flask sign and "please service our room" on the door and headed into York. The hotel is ideally placed for this. We came back at 3pm for a pit stop to find that someone had changed the sign on our door to "do not disturb" and our hearts sank - here is the second reason we decided never to stay here again. We opened the door to find nothing had been touched, at the very least the bins hadn't even been emptied and this caused a bit of an issue for us as my husband has a colostomy bag so it's important the bins get emptied. The room only has one small window above the door for ventilation and as it was extremely cold outside we left it shut while we were out and seeing as the bins weren't emptied the smell was a bit powerful. I've worked in the hotel cleaning industry for years and know that even if guests are short stay they at least get their bins emptied, bed made and a top up of anything they need. This left us in a situation where we had to dispose of our rubbish ourselves as we didn't feel comfortable going to reception and explaining all this. We tidied our room, opened the small window above the door and went back out into York. On checkout we were asked how our stay was and we mentioned the glass bottles and they are fully aware of it but there's nothing they can do as it's the neighbouring restaurants that back onto them that make the noise. I can see that this isn't really their fault. The main issue we had was the sign on the door being changed - neighbouring room thinking it was funny to change it or staff member can't be bothered to clean and telling a superior that the sign was like that already? Either way it annoyed us and was very inconvenient.

We booked this hotel for a UK honeymoon as a bit of luxury and was not disappointed. Our room felt luxurious without feeling too over the top and the location is perfect if you want to tour all of the local sites. The staff were brilliant and the breakfast selection was good and tasted delicious. We also ate lunch and had drinks at the outside bar during our stay which were also perfect. If you want a reasonably priced 5 star hotel in a central location the Judge's Lodge is worth considering. It is worth noting it is centrally based so there can be some noise in the mornings. It didn't not bother me and my wife but might be more of an annoyance for others.

This night away was a lovely gift from my husband for my Birthday. The hotel is in the perfect spot for shopping and sightseeing in York centre, you couldn’t be any closer. Staff were lovely and we dropped our bag off in the morning which was in our room at check in. I did email twice before our stay to ask about luggage and no one bothered to get back to me so maybe communication could be a little better. Lady on reception was lovely and gave us a flask of milk and showed us to our room which was Room 7 Lendal on the top floor. The room was very hot even with the window open. Luckily there was a fan which helped a little but it could really do with some air conditioning. Also the room has the outside bar underneath it so you need the fan to drown out the noise. Also the bottle bins got emptied at 6am, not ideal but not much you can do about that.
Breakfast was ok. I’d love a good buffet again but that’s the world we’re currently in I guess. Also maybe a few more vegan options at Breakfast like a vegan grill would be beneficial although husband did enjoy his porridge.
I would go back but maybe try and get a room on the other side of the building

Lovely room and breakfast but stay was ruined by early morning wake up! We stayed in a twin courtyard room which was out of the hotel itself, the room was lovely but the bathroom sink did leak when turned on. Unfortunately we were woke up at 6 in the morning by loud cleaners going in and out of a store cupboard which was directly opposite our room - there should not be a room here or guests should be warned that you will be woken up!! Cleaners were slamming doors, dragging things across the floor and chatting and laughing really loudly and this went on and on so we could not get back to sleep. When we checked out I let the lady know of our disruption and she did not apologise for this and instead blamed it on work going on across the road but this was not the noise which had disturbed us. Very disappointed, if I were to stay again I definitely would not book a courtyard room!

My wife and I stayed here over a long weekend at the beginning of September. We arrived before check in but were able to leave our luggage and explore the city. When we returned check in was a breeze and our luggage had already been sent to the room. We had room 11 “Clifton”. This is a very large room with sufficient space for a sofa, large bed and assorted other furniture. The bathroom had a separate shower and large jacuzzi bath as well as the usual other facilities. We both loved the room. We were on a B&B basis and found the breakfasts faultless. There is a great choice, particularly good is the fresh fruit salad and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. My wife is coeliac and there were no issues providing gf bread. The hotel is a very short walk from the station and ideally suited for exploring this beautiful city. We were so impressed we have already booked for next year. Staff were extremely helpful and always cheerful greeting guests with a cheery good morning. We didn’t dine in but the food which we did see looked lovely.
