This late Georgian mansion stands on its own grounds and has the appearance of a country house hotel, yet is just a short walk from York Minster and all major city attractions. The Churchill has just been entirely refurbished in a style that blends the building's history with contemporary insertions. One of York's leading luxury hotels, the hotel is a unique establishment offering stylish bedrooms and suites plus the renowned fine dining brasserie and a relaxed bar.

The Churchill Hotel boasts a prime location that guests love, just a short stroll from the city center and major attractions. While the additional costs for parking and breakfast may impact the perceived value, visitors are enchanted by the hotel's charming and stylish atmosphere, even though some areas might benefit from a refresh.
The service at The Churchill earns high praise for its attentiveness and warmth, significantly enhancing the guest experience. While opinions on the rooms vary, with some finding them cozy and others too small, the overall cleanliness of the hotel is consistently applauded.

Not a person to ever write a review but have walked past the hotel many times and seen the igloos outside, me and my partner Kyle thought we’d pop in just to enquire about them. Ian was on the reception desk and was the most welcoming individual, we have never even stayed overnight in this hotel and we are now going to be booking to on our next visit to York, we travel from Liverpool often to York and because of Ian we will be back to the Churchill most definitely, he was so knowledgeable about the place and you could tell he loves his job letting us take a look around and talking us through all the offerings
See you soon Ian

I think the arrival at the Churchill Hotel might be the toughest part, mostly because we were driving a rental mini van and the parking lot is quite tight. That is about the only complaint I could possibly find about the Churchill.
The location itself was perfect for us, about a 7 minute walk away from the city core which means you aren't right in the area with all the pubs and action. Exactly what we look for.
The hotel more than lived up to our expectations too. The staff were incredibly friendly upon check in and every time we left. The hotel has a very boutique-y feel and although it is very modern, I definitely felt like we went back a bit in time whenever we walked through the large front door.
We had a small double room, which is quite compact but was very nicely done up and had a very comfortable bed. We had requested a quiet room and ended up with a room overlooking the neighbouring park (which also had a view of the Minster!). The bathroom was very compact, and the shower was small, but once again quite nicely done. I'm a rather large individual so showering was a bit tight.
I would definitely recommend staying there! Note. They do charge for parking ($17CDN/night), but after a bit of research it seems like it is on par for the city and there aren't really many other options.

Stayed here with another couple on a weekend birthday treat.
The hotel was easy enough to find almost in the centre of York , not far from the train station and did have car parking facilities, however be aware that they charge £10 per vehicle per day ( would've thought this was included in room price ). Greeting on arrival was professional and we were in the rooms within minutes, note access to the hotel side entrance does have steps to climb, dunno if it had disabled access. We were allocated 2 rooms on the ground floor, seemed clean enough and had all the accessories needed. Hotel is positioned ideally for York and its attractions with a short walk to the minster and the shambles. There are tons of restaurants, pubs and bars to choose from in York also.
The rooms were comfortable enough but the heating system in the rooms is a bit too much ( old cast iron radiators ) the pipes to the radiators do not stop radiating heat which made the room uncomfortable at night, we tried opening windows but these couldnt be kept open as it was a security risk , faced a busy main road ( too noisy to sleep ) and one window faced an outside seating area so anyone sat there could see and hear straight into the room.
We ate at the restaurant on the second night, I had muscles and beef and ale pie, delicious, others had duck, again delicious. Service was also good. Breakfast was waiter service also and on day one was good but day 2 a little cramped due to being placed in the lounge area, choice at breakfast also seemed good although some items although on the menu were out of stock ( pineapple juice ).
Checkout also seemed straight forward enough with no major issues
We had a nice weekend only tarnished by the rooms overheating at night.

On arrival we were greeted by very helpful, happy and quick reception staff. We were informed that there would be no change of sheets or towels during our 5 night stay as we would have to move all of our belonging out of the room if we wanted it cleaned. We luckily booked a large room and I'm glad we did as a lot of people seemed to be complaining about their small rooms. Our room had only a velux window, so no views which was disheartening. Bathroom was compact to say the least however it was clean.Drinks and food hugely overpriced. Fire alarms went off twice in one evening and I was disappointed that there was no note or apology or explanation given. If you want to use the car park then its first come first served. After returning from a day out there were no spaces. I spoke to a member of staff and they said they would get a member of staff to move their car. I think the hotel needs to prioitise guests and if you have paid for the parking then a space should be reserved for you. Also during the current situation they need to set up a system for changing towels and cleaning rooms for those who stay long term. The hotel is expensive for what you get. There was not a telephone in the room so room service was not available. Not sure if this could be looked at. The hotel is in a great location but I was disappointed for the amount of money it cost.

Booked this hotel based on reviews on trip advisor and booking.com. It had 4*+ and superb as description.
It’s nowhere near being superb at all.
If you book a “small double room” please know that is SMALL.
The bed is a large single bed. And it’s claustrophobic also. There is no A/C and the window doesn’t fully open. They offer a mini table fan that does nothing but make noise. I’m glad that when we came it wasn’t hot.
The rooms are reasonably clean but the bathrooms are a let down. A lot of mould and the toilet seat didn’t fully cover the toilet under it. One of our rooms had a skylight but it couldn’t be open because it was so dirty.
Also if you are staying more than one night you MUST let reception know that you want your rooms clean and towels replaced because even if you hang the “Please service my room” outside the door it will not be read or acknowledged.
You have to tell them in person at reception.

Response from John Wallace, General Manager at The Churchill Hotel
Responded 26 Jul 2020
Dear JennifersP8097GZ, We acknowledge that our Small Double bedrooms are indeed small hence we titled them as such to manage expectations. They are perfectly functional for a shorter stay and all have a standard UK double bed never a single (the only bedrooms which have single beds are the twin and family bedrooms). Your bedroom had a brand new bathroom during lockdown and it is not mouldy. We are happy to service any guest’s bedroom mid stay but our new coronavirus cleaning protocol involves the use of a non toxic, PH neutral disinfectant between each guest and also when servicing a resident guest’s bedroom (for both the housekeeper’s and your protection). We do ask though that your belongings are loosely packed away first so we can mist all surfaces; if this isn’t done on a two night stay such as yours then our housekeepers are instructed not to enter and clean plus it’s safer for you too not to have staff work in your bedroom without being able to disinfect before you return. Fresh towels can always be delivered to your door. Your skylight doesn’t open when it’s raining but this room does have air conditioning for this reason.

What a beautiful hotel, we arrived Saturday checked out Monday. Beautiful beer garden and exceptionally clean rooms. All staff helpful and courteous, we arrived at 10am Saturday all rooms fogged and sanitised so felt safe and covid secure. As we couldn’t check in until 2 reception very kind and we were given a map and had a drink in their beautiful beer garden before we left, where you order through a user friendly QR code. We had breakfast both days which was exceptional - eggs benedict for me and my wife had a full English, best eggs benedict I have had in a long time. The garden igloos were full but the beer garden had a fantastic atmosphere anyway so we weren’t bothered, would recommend booking in advance as they seem like they’re booked up for a while - I’m not surprised as they look gorgeous.
Thanks the Churchill it was great. We will be back

Disappointing for a “luxury” hotel
Arrived at the hotel at 6pm following visit to the Designer Outlet, to find car park full. When booking hotel I booked car parking for £10, so was surprised to find no space available and another car in front of me deciding to park car on ‘keep clear’ sign outside hotel entrance. I told reception I had booked a car parking space but there was no spaces. The receptionist told me to park my car around the corner at their back gates next to the bins. I was not impressed. We booked the superior double room which was on the lower ground floor. Our room was quirky and nice bathroom but had no window and no air con, so room was extremely hot. Cleanliness was just ok. I found two fans in the wardrobe, however this were thick of dust, that bad we didn’t turn them on as the dust would have been everywhere. We decided to dine out on evening and hotel was a short walk into York centre which was a great location. We were going to sit in bar for a drink prior to going out but area lacked atmosphere and didn’t offer any cocktails apart from a kir royale and aperol spritz. Breakfast was very greasy and restaurant room lacked atmosphere, alongside a gentleman who may have been the manager carrying huge ladders through the dining area while people were eating to do some work. When checking out I complained about parking having to park my car next to the back gates and bins when I had paid £10 for parking. The lady receptionist was very abrupt telling me that I haven’t paid the £10 when booking (this is paid for on departure with breakfast) and that it’s only a preference and you’re not guaranteed a parking space, but this is not stated on my confirmation email!!! No apologies for having to park next to bins or offer for me not to pay the £10, shocking customer service and lack of care. I could tell straight away they must always get complaints about the car park. I also overheard that staff park their cars in the car park which is appalling when charging customers £10 and asking them to park next to bins!!! Customers behind me asked if it was dog friendly which she replied yes small dogs. I rang up prior to booking to check it wasn’t dog friendly which I was told no!! There was a beer garden for drinks and a pizza oven outside which was busy both days we were there. However the beer garden is the only thing the hotel is clearly bothered about and no care for the residents staying over at hotel. The car park situation was carnage with appalling organisation, allowing you to book at £10 car parking space when there’s isn’t a one and it’s so tight you car could easily get marked. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone who wants ‘luxury’ with very poor service. We will not be staying here again.

Situated within walking distance to all attractions in York city centre. A pleasant walk into the town past a sainsbury's local and a couple of pubs.
The road goes under an arch in the walls which you can access via steps.
Lots of eating places on the road towards the Minster.
£10 for 24 hours parking on site was useful but if busy is quite tight so advise reversing into a space if possible.
The reception staff were very professional and friendly when we arrived making sure we had everything we required.
Our room, 123, was towards the back of the hotel and seemed to be squeezed into a spare space. It had no window to outside, just a skylight. Which wasn't a problem as it was dark most of the time we were in the room.
The bed was extremely comfortable and large, being 2 singles zipped together. It is advertised as a twin room.
The en suite was adequate. We managed to squeeze through the door into the shower as it has limited openning due to proximity of the toilet. Avoid this room if you are on the large side around the waist.
A nice touch was the kitkat bars with the yorkshire tea and coffee bags in the room.
The breakfast dining area was a bit squashed when there were other areas they could have used. The service was variable and not quite up to the standard of the hotel in general and the price paid. The eggs benedict were delicious. Better than the fried breakfast in my opinion. The thick sliced ham was flavoured with nutmeg and the sauce was creamy. Delicious.
Overall an elegant hotel close to the centre but choose room and breakfast with care.

Firstly, the location of the hotel is excellent and just a short walk to York town centre. We had requested parking when booking (£10 per night) and was informed there were never any problems as the hotel had 44 spaces available and it was never full. However, other TA reviews suggest otherwise. As we were to arrive Sunday afternoon we didn't expect it to be an issue.
On arrival we were lucky enough to secure one of the last 3 remaining spaces. It should also be noted that parking is very tight and vehicles usually have to reverse back out of the car park due to the limited space as turning is difficult.
The room we had was small but had a decent sized bathroom. However, I would suggest you request a room that is not adjacent to the railway line. It's not particularly busy but is loud when trains pass.
Although the hotel can be seen to be following Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines in the public areas, I'm not entirely confident the room was cleaned and sanitised to a satisfactory standard e.g. the TV remote control did not appear to have been cleaned for sometime !
We ate in the hotel restaurant the first night. Tables were well separated and the service was good. The food however was very average considering the prices. There is an outdoor garden area providing pizza which appeared to be very popular.
Overall I would suggest the hotel is satisfactory for a one or two night stay.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights ideally located 5minutes walk to the minster. The staff was friendly and the hotel was lovely, great decor and very clean. Breakfast was great served by a very pleasant waiter called Dave and nothing was too much trouble for him. The outside area has igloo type pods which are heated and can be hired for £25 for 2 and a half hours ideal to comply with the covid restrictions for social gatherings. I would most certainly recommend this hotel and hope to return in the future.

How much per day is parking
Thank you for reply’s
You cannot use the car park if you are only eating there, only as a guest in the hotel. There is parking at Mary car park which is about a 5 minute walk away
Taxi. Station is too far to walk especially with luggage.
