Stayed here for 2 nights with my partner on a visit to york. Great location, interesting and historic building (the heritage centre is well worth an hour or so of your time) and nice rooms. Lovely breakfast (including very good vegetarian options) and friendly staff; would definitely stay again if I found myself back in the city.

I highly recommend The Bar Convent; everything about it was perfect for a weeks stay in York especially when travelling by train. It is just a short walk from the station or a one stop bus ride (away from the city). Once you are in York travelling around by foot or bus couldn't be easier; all buses pass by in...

Booked this as an overnight stay for a concert I was going to mainly as it was a lot cheaper than the other options. I'm so glad I did as it's a real find. Literally around the corner from the train station it is actually part of the Bar Convent Heritage Centre. The welcome was very friendly and I was...

Lovely large, clean and bright room with a good sized double bed + a 5cm mattress topper (such a bonus). The en-suite shower room was clean and equipped with fresh, fluffy white towels and toiletries - there is good water pressure in the shower too. The breakfasts were excellent with a very varied choice, including chopped fresh fruit (which is...

I have just visited York for the first time and stayed at The Bar Convent. It exceeded expectations. From arrival, when we received a warm welcome and our bags were carried up to our rooms. Mine was on the third floor, a lovely fresh single with a large recently refurbished bathroom and a view over the surrounding rooftops. Warm, plenty of...

The best place to stay! Comfortable room, delicious breakfast, and a building full of history (including a museum, a secret catholic church and even the mummified hand of a martyr!) Good value too! But the true treasure here? The staff. They made my stay truly unforgettable.

I'm so glad I found The Bar Convent (quite by chance while searching the internet for a late booking) It's in a perfect location for the centre of York, within easy walking distance of all that York has to offer. Steeped in history, charm and full of character. The hotel has been refurbished with new bathrooms/showers to the bedrooms and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bar Convent is England's oldest living convent, established in 1686 as a school for girls. Today, the Grade I Listed building is one of York's most unique places to stay, promising peace, quiet and friendly service in a heritage setting. Our rooms are largely en-suite, with a few lower-priced rooms on the top floor with shared bathroom facilities. There is an award-winning café on site, as well as an state-of-the-art Exhibition on the convent's fascinating history. Just around the corner from York Rail Station, and only minutes into the centre of town, The Bar Convent's location is second-to-none and provides easy access to the city's famous walls. A large number of restaurants, pubs and bars are nearby. The Bar Convent is proud to provide York's warmest welcome, to those of all faiths and none. ... more   less
