The historic grade II listed Prince Rupert Hotel is situated in the very heart of medieval Shrewsbury and just a short stroll from the individual shops and many tourist attractions. Surrounded by narrow cobblestone streets and black & white timbered buildings it provides the perfect base to explore beautiful Shrewsbury. With the heritage of the hotel dating back to the 12th & 15th century, character and charm abound with sloping floors, exposed Tudor beams and a restored Jacobean staircase. Privately owned for many years by Michael & Diane Matthews, the hotel offers a great choice of dining all with a focus on fresh local produce. The Royalist is ideal for a special occasion with an a la carte menu together with a superb wine list. Chambers brasserie is renowned for its traditional British menu. Camellias Tea Rooms offers an extensive menu selection including traditional afternoon tea. A charming place to relax to the sound of a grand piano. Car parking is charged @ £10 per night.

The Prince Rupert Hotel boasts a prime central location favored by guests eager to explore Shrewsbury, with its historic appeal often celebrated despite some remarks about its tired appearance. While the service generally garners positive comments for being friendly and helpful, there are occasional mentions of unresponsiveness. Visitors have mixed feelings about the rooms; some appreciate the modern bathrooms and comfort, while others are disappointed by noise issues and dated decor. Although the hotel's cleanliness is typically well-regarded, the value proposition is contentious, with numerous travelers questioning the room rates and additional costs.

This is a charming old hotel conveniently in the middle of Shrewsbury. Lively people on reception with particular mention of Charlie who was refreshingly genuinely friendly.
Excellent breakfast but no idea why you have to book your time. Didn't seem to make any difference.
The room was generally comfortable but let down by minor irritants.
Like so many hotel bathrooms the extractor fan didn't work and I doubt it will ever be repaired so shaving in front of a misted mirror was difficult. The toilet seat was dangerously loose but I guess the cleaners will just straighten it up for the next guest. The spare toilet roll is interactively stored on the glass shelf under the mirror. So attractive !
With a little more TLC this would be a 5

This hotel is in a wonderful position with everywhere in the town just a few minutes walk away which is the reason we chose it, however unfortunately it needs to up its game somewhat. We opted for a suite in order to have more room and a bit of luxury but did not get this. The room was basic, bed only a double, pillows rather cheap and lumpy and furniture with chunks out, there was a small separate ‘lounge’ with a sofa and a tatty coffee table, plus one of the downlighters was broken. The bathroom was lovely and modern but the shower was pathetic with the smallest shower head ever and a disappointing flow, also housekeeping didn’t clean the bathroom , just re-folded the towels, the floor and bathroom counter were not cleaned. The room cost almost £200 a night so was not value for money, but the wait staff at breakfast and the location of the hotel meant we enjoyed our stay but certainly wouldn’t bother booking a suite again.

Stayed for 1 night February 2025. The location is spot on, right in the centre of town. The lady on the phone was very friendly in directing us to the carpark, avoiding the road closures which are in place for Saturday shopping. Booked a standard room via Expedia and got upgraded to a suite which was nice bonus - this is a great old school hotel. A glass of sherry on arrival, a nice touch! The staff were mostly friendly, the bed comfortable, large clean bathroom with both bath and shower. The breakfast was good and served quickly with cooked and continental options. The room was pretty cool due to single glazed windows (it was approx 3-4 degrees outside when we were there), some people would have thought a bit chilly, but for me it was a welcome change compared with most hotel rooms that are red hot 52 weeks a year! Personal preference and for me I much preferred it cooler. Paying £10.00 for parking is an annoyance when you're a paying guest, but on the flip side the parking is owned by another firm and not the hotel. Would I stay again, yes I certainly would.

My wife and I booked a 2 night stay on the 30/09/2023 and wanted to make it special by booking the Prince Charlotte Suite, and paying a total of £445.00 . Also, we expected high quality food from one of your three restaurant as stated and shown on your website.

Firstly, we were disappointed on our arrival with the bathroom. Very basic standard on suite for a four poster Suite room. Also, the bath plug had been changed which does not fit and has a hole in the centre. Therefore, the bath water runs away.

Secondly, when we attempted to book a restaurant for the evening we arrived we were informed that the restaurants were closed due no bookings and the chef had been sent home. Yet still advertising food available on your website.

Thirdly, when we returned to the hotel on Sunday again no restaurants open and the bar was closed. When we returned to our room, we discovered our room had not been serviced. Therefore, Bed not made, no clean towels, No tea, coffee, or milk and dirty cups.

My wife went to reception to complain and the receptionist said there had only been one staff member cleaning rooms that day and they must have missed out room. She did not know where the clean cups were but she could wash our dirty cups for us!

This is not acceptable especially when we have paid £445.00 for our two night stay. My wife and I are totally disappointed with our stay which quite frankly ruined the weekend. Therefore, please refund the total amount back onto the bank card from which you took it from.

We booked a three night stay directly with the hotel. My husband has mobility issues, so the location of this 4 star hotel was important to us as was the car parking service mentioned on their website. Unfortunately nothing about this place lived up to our expectations.

Apparently the car parking service had not been offered since the Covid pandemic. Surely enough time to have updated their website. After we parked the car ( £10 per night for the privilege), the walk back to the hotel was gruelling for my husband. We were then asked to pay the full amount of our stay on arrival even though we had left credit card details when booking. We have stayed in better hotels than this one and never been asked to pay up front before. To add insult to injury, the fire safety plan at the back of the room door showed that we had been allocated the smallest room in the place.

There was a good choice for breakfast.

It was our intention, as usual for us, to enjoy a relaxing drink there before our evening meal, and to book at least one evening meal with them. For obvious reasons we did not!

We will not be going back there, neither can we recommend it.

Very outdated, tired decor in hotel. In dire need of refurbishment. Room grubby throughout, old, lumpy pillows and bed. Peeling wallpaper and dirty, rusty bathroom fittings. Even the edge of our room door had a LOT of grime on it!! Room keys had large, old, cracked dirty fobs which really need replacing for health/hygiene in current climes. Decent breakfast choice served to the table which is a nice touch. I desperately wanted to like this hotel as the staff were lovely, helpful and friendly but sadly I wouldn't return.

This hotel was recommended due to its location in Shrewsbury town centre, we did use a booking site not the hotel direct and some things were misleading especially when it comes to parking. Parking is a 5/10 min walk from the hotel, and it charges £10 per night, directions were provided by the hotel and it was easy to find, word of warning the streets are very narrow especially for big 4x4’s.

Reception staff on check in were very friendly and happy to assist, my husband has breathing issues and they moved our room closer to the lift which was very much appreciated. The lift is very small as well 2 people with luggage was a tight squeeze.

Room 103 faces directly onto the Main Street, noise level wasn’t too bad especially for a weekend, yes you can hear the pub next door, but to be fair come 1am all went quiet. Rooms are small and compact no heating was on however the room was roasting and we couldn’t open a window for fresh air which wasn’t great.

Bathroom was very modern which was good, shower over a bath too. Bed was comfortable and enough space to move round the room more than adequate for a weekend. Room was starting to look very tired, marked walls, carpets starting to show their age.

I found the bar in the hotel to be expensive, £4.50 for a single rum no mixer and no real ale on tap either only in bottles, so unfortunately we only purchased once in the bar.

Breakfast was more than adequate, large continental section, fruit, yogurt, cereals, juices, pastries. You could have this along with a cooked breakfast. Smoked haddock and poached eggs were lovely, my other half however thought the English breakfast was disappointing not a great choice.

I love a coffee with my breakfast however have to admit the coffee is shocking, tasteless. Not sure what brand they use, it’s just not great. Service was a bit slow and the restaurant at breakfast time wasn’t busy, for it to be like this.

Overall the hotel is brilliant location wise, however I feel what was paid for 2 nights was expensive for what the hotel has to offer. Unfortunately we would not recommend and we wouldn’t return either. Having checked out other hotels in the surrounding area there is better out there.

I was in awe as I approached the prince Rupert from the railway station a few minutes away. What a magnificent sight before me an olde worlde timbered building just as I imagined it would be. I walked into the lobby through the glass revolving doors and was very warmly greeted by the lady receptionist and as I checked in was offered a free glass of sherry. A compact lift took me to the 2nd floor where my room was located. Room locks were old fashioned key locks and with a wiggly turn of the doorknob I was in my room. Plain painted walls, bright modern bathroom plenty of towels, nice double bed tv on wall. What more could I want. Breakfast in the medieval styled restaurant could not be faulted, fresh fruit, quality yoghurt, cooked breakfast of your choice coffee or tea.Delightfuly and efficiently served by the lady waitress. All the staff at the hotel were exceptionally helpful at all times. Many thanks to them all. The hotel is situated in the middle of Shrewsbury where most of the restaurants and very friendly pubs are such as the BULL next-door to the Prince Rupert hotel. I dined in for one dinner as I was tired after a long day walking around wonderful SHREWBURY.I had pan roasted duck in jus with green vegetables and dauphinoise potatoes plus starter and desert and 2 large beers for £40 pounds all in.Bargain if you ask me.

Bussiness Trip - I stayed overnight for work in the area, the staff were very welcoming on arrival, it was a bit of a pain with the car parking a few hundred yards away but I could have been much worst if it was raining. We were told food was being served until 9:30pm, just after 9pm we asked about food and was told the restaurant was closed due to it being quiet so we headed into town where there were plenty of choice for food (The castle Thai was excellent)
The room was quite dated but clean, the floor was very uneven and had very squeaky floor boards due to the age of the hotel (very old and lots of history). But the bed was very comfy.
Breakfast in the morning was very nice but quite small.
Overall a pleasent stay with nothing really to complain about, I would stay again due to the good central location.

Don’t stay in room 101 you will hear everything outside through the single pane window from drunks outside the bars- arguing- bin collections- bottles crashing etc

Nicest part of the room is the refurbished bathroom tho on arrival had to get the handyman clean the toilet as what looked like plaster was stuck to the bowl.. he did clear it tho promptly.

The bed kept moving it’s on sliders and the heavy throw could do with cleaning it’s quite stained!

And the lift is so noisy you can hear it through the night!

The breakfast is of good standard and the servers very pleasant.

Would we stay here again …. Yes but a different room and away from the lift.. excellent value for money and great location will bring us back.

Also we paid the £40 for car parking the receptionist gave us a map of how to get to it and it was only a few minutes walk back.

They have a strange system I’ve never come across before, instead of just swiping your card which would give you unlimited spending at the hotel they ask what spend limit you want to apply to your card while staying. I guess this is good if you happen to lose your card while you are out and about.

Not that I am aware of, as with any hotel swipe of you credit card allows you to have drinks etc placed on your room tab but all is settled when you check out.
