The Lion and Pheasant Hotel delights many guests with its charming atmosphere and spotless cleanliness, often highlighted in reviews for its cozy decor and comfortable amenities in both rooms and common areas. While the hotel's location is lauded for its convenience to local attractions in Shrewsbury, some visitors have expressed concerns over the noise from a nearby road.
The staff receives mixed feedback; they are often praised for their friendliness but occasionally criticized for lapses in attentiveness. Travelers also appreciate the quality of food, though they sometimes mention limited amenities and find the value questionable due to overpricing and unexpected charges.

Detailed Reviews
2nd time we have stayed in the stables and I love it. Beds super comfy, lovely pillows, warm and lots of room. A couple of suggestions for improvement though;
- Put a coat hook in the entrance where you come in and a large rug, there is no where to hang coats and the small doormat at the bottom of the stairs doesn't stop dirt into the bedrooms.
- In the twin room there is no hanging facility but plenty of space.
- In the kitchen there should be a cloth and tea towel so you can keep the kitchen tidy and wiped down.
- Bottle of water and glasses in twin room, none in double.
These are such minor points but would make a big difference.
The one complaint I made was that after parking in a spot closest to the stables I was asked to move my car as I was in the "Directors parking space". I parked there as I don't have full movement in my knee which I pointed out, but I was told the Director likes to park there.
I am an MD and my customers always come first, I certainly didn't get this impression from the Hotel which spoil my stay a little. Nonetheless, the stables fits what I look for when staying in Shrewsbury and all other staff couldn't be more welcoming or helpful, the said Director is lucky to have them!

The hotel is centrally located, the city center is within walking distance. It also offers a few parking spaces, which can only be reached with some driving skills through a narrow passage. Just across the street, however, it has a paid public car park.
The rooms cleverly combine the historical elements with modern amenities. Due to the central location directly on a thoroughfare, it is not very quiet depending on the room, even the restaurant in the courtyard can impair sleep a bit.
The included English breakfast is served, it also has cereal and fruit salad. The quality was okay, although not intoxicating, but the staff was very friendly.
All in all a pleasant place, but the noise made for unrestful nights. Next time we will choose a different hotel.

We booked this Hotel for the location for a visit to near by gardens. We initially created a stir when arriving by reversing into the car park through the arch which is a little tight. But we were always taught to reverse park! It was clear from the friendly exchange with the manager at the time what a welcoming place this is, and our initial thoughts were not wrong.
We were booked for one night Dinner Bed and Breakfast. On check in our dinner reservation was arranged. Our room was light and airy with a lovely neutral decor. It was spotlessly clean. We liked the attention to detail with wooden proper coat hangers, rather than those usual hotel ones.
The shower was a great size with lots of power and easy to use taps and lovely toiletries. ( I hate fiddly shower controls)
The restaurant had a lovely warm atmostphe. The menu was small but very creative. It was obvious that there was a talented chef in the kitchen and we were not disappointed. There is a good and varied wine list accommodating all budgets. The food was delicious. More importantly the staff and level of service was wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and always with a smile, It was clear the staff enjoyed working here. There is an atmospheric bear garden to the rear again with excellent service.
Again at breakfast the staff and level of service were excellent. The. breakfast menu is good not just offering the usual "full English" and continental breakfast. I had a twist on Eggs Benedict with perfectly poached eggs. We left very happy and would definitely recommend this lovely gem of a hotel in a lovely town.
Congratulations to the management in getting it so right! Great value for money, excellent food and service.

Location: 60/100 Shrewsbury is a beautiful city full of ups and downs with a river that runs around it, lovely medieval houses and numerous monuments. The hotel is positioned at the down edge of the centre, along a quite trafficated road and neither good nor bad view. The the car park has rather complicated access, a large car probably cannot enter.
Service: 40/100. I wrote an email to the hotel reception, asking if they could give me a reduced price if I stayed for many nights. They offered me the standard price (they would have made a better impression by admitting it right away). I still reserved a room and they gave me the worst one (at least I hope it was the worst!). Perhaps, for a customer who offered to stay for several nights a month for several months, it would have been a better idea to reserve a more decent room for him.
Room: 5/100. A room for kids. The twin room in which I slept with my doughter, was furnished with short beds, so short that they do not accommodate a person in its entire length (yet I am not a Watusi, and neither is my daughter). The distance of the beds from the walls did not exceed half a meter. The view right on the main road allowed us to be woken up pleasantly at six in the morning by a nice truck (perhaps a garbage truck, given that it stopped with its engines running for a good 6-7 minutes). There were no shaver sockets in the bathroom or a fridge in the room (yet the hotel advertises itself as four star!). The television was smaller than my home computer. Maybe they lowered my age by mistake and thought we were two children, giving me a room suitable for this age. There is no lift (present in much older and more fascinating hotels)
Breakfast: 25/100. Served in an uncomfortable passage room (which hotel guests pass through with their luggage to access or exit the rooms since there is no lift). Standard food, of mediocre quality and mostly pre-packaged (fake fruit juices, usual trivial fruit arranged to fill the tables and make them look more attractive), little choice.
Price: £160 for two people. This is the main problem. I spent much less (£110) in two alternative hotels where I received much more comfort, better quality of the rooms and better location, not to mention the breakfast. If they had charged me £80, it would have been an acceptable three stars hotel.

We went for Sunday lunch on Dec 17th. When we walked in the downstairs was very cosy & Christmassy so we had high expectations and were looking forward to an enjoyable lunch. We were told quite curtly that we could have a drink because our whole party wasn’t there and pointed to a table by the Christmas tree, where we waited for a while but nobody came to take our drinks order. The rest of our party arrived & after waiting for a while longer (still with no drinks) we were taken upstairs to a cold room (possibly overflow) where our table was. The room was too chilly & we asked to be seated downstairs where it was much nicer & they kindly accommodated us.
Our waitress did not look happy to be working, she told us she had worked till midnight the previous night and then started again at 7.30am. She did her job but there was very little pleasantly and it did feel a little like we shouldn’t ask her for anything. She spent a lot of time standing by the bar with a very unpleasant look on her face.
The wine by the glass; red & white was really not very pleasant and the nicer selections were only sold by the bottle.
The starters were very nice, we had fish cakes, pate & the bread & olives between us which were enjoyable.
For our main courses we ordered two sharing platters each costing £60, Turkey costing £22 & a fish course.
The sharing platters are for two people so why would they come with three roast potatoes & one carrot? Surely four potatoes and two carrots would be easier to split?
We were given one vegetable serving and one leek serving for both platters and the Turkey meal which should have had its own vegetables. If there were vegetables for the fish dish we didn’t get those. They did bring us extra leek on request and extra gravy is charged at £1.
The food was presented well & tasted nice until I discovered a piece of plastic in my dinner.
We called the waitress over to show her the plastic & instead of apologising she simply took the plastic and said I will tell the kitchen. We were left quite speechless.!
A gentleman eventually did apologise for the plastic explaining that it came from around the turkey. He offered to deduct the price of the meal from the bill. There was a deduction made for the cost of the turkey meal but in fact the plastic was found in one of the platter meals costing £60.
To top it off there was a £20 service charge included in the bill for our grumpy waitress, we did contemplate asking it to be removed from the bill but then decided to leave it as she wasn’t the only one who had waited on the table.
We left feeling very underwhelmed and wishing we had gone somewhere else.

Two couples and two singles (all family) stayed for two nights. The rooms were very comfortable but just be aware that there are a lot of stairs to climb. The staff were very willing to carry cases for you and the reception staff were very welcoming on arrival. Breakfasts were freshly cooked and well presented and the one dinner that we had was also delicious. Nothing was too much trouble from the team and we would certainly go there again if in the area.

We stayed 2 nights for our wedding and have mixed feelings about this hotel.
The hotel is beautiful and we loved the rabbit warren feeling and up and down floors. The bar area is nicely decorated although we didn't use it.
Our biggest issue was with noise and light. On the first night, it was really warm so we had to open the windows, unfortunately, our first-floor room was in the front of the building next to the noisy road with traffic although the night. The other issue was a street light which lit up the room and as the curtains didn't close properly and the blind cover enough of the window it was bright all night long. On the second night, we decided to use the supplied fan instead of opening the window but this was just as noisy. The hotel does supply ear plugs but I don't really want to have to wear earplugs on a break.
It feels harsh to knock stars off for the noise as the hotel probably can't do anything about the noise, but proper fitting curtains and blinds would help.
Our other issue which is personnel preference is the hardness of the bed. It's was just far too hard and slim for our liking. The frame was metal and when your are 6’5 and kick the bottom if it, it hurts!
The bathroom was of descent size, the shower could have done with a good scrub and the shower head had a few leeks.
Breakfast was nice, a choice of drinks and a good selection to order from. Some of our party selections didn't arrive but this was sorted by the pleasant staff.
Overall it's a nice hotel but we wouldn't choose to stay again due to the noise and comfort.

Great location , stayed in the apartment - the stables - spacious with 2 big bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on ground floor then kitchen dining and seating area upstairs . Great for friends as nice to relax on sofa and chat after day of shopping . Beds very comfy , apartment spotless . All staff very friendly and helpful . About 5 mins to river walks / runs which was lovely and found some new restaurants that we visited later . Close to nice wine bars and restaurants - didn’t eat at hotel but had few drinks in bar and staff very attentive . Will be returning

Very difficult car park to get into but reception and public areas very nice, welcoming and clean. Our room was incredibly small, far smaller than expected for the very high price paid. It was hot and stuffy and the traffic noise was unbelievably loud, making listening to the TV impossible with windows open. Shutters did help to block noise overnight and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was brilliant, excellent service and attention to detail. For the first time this summer we actually stayed in a hotel with a full breakfast menu all served at the table - felt like pre-Covid days for once. Dinner was nice but very expensive for a limited menu (do understand the need for a reduced menu) and the waiting staff could not be faulted. All in all, a nice hotel but, compared to similar establishments, very, very overpriced.

Noise noise noise
We spent 3 nights in this hotel. When we phoned to book we asked for a quite room and we’re told they would give us a side room that is quiet, when we arrived we noticed that the road and bridge were just outside our room we didn’t think much of this at the time however we hardly slept because of the road noise there is no window sound proofing at all.. so next morning we asked to be moved to a quiet room.. they gave us a room overlooking the car park which at first was quiet.. this room was smaller than the first room (that was also quite small) and we said it’s not the same rate as the first room, they said it was it they would knock £10 a night off so all was good until the extractor fan from the kitchen started up and went on all night this was very noisy and completely spoilt our sleep on the remaining two nights..
The hotel is over 2 floors but there are so many stairs all over the place it’s like a rabbit Warren so be warned if your not good with stairs
The television in the rooms are the smallest I’ve ever seen in a hotel these really need updating
The staff at breakfast were lovely also at the 1 evening meal we had but there was a young guy at the bar in the downstairs eating area that needs customer training I went up to the bar and he was making a cocktail I was the only person at the bar but there was no acknowledgement I was there he just totally ignored me all he needed was to make eye contact with me and say that he will be with me as soon as he finished the cocktail.. when he did eventually serve me there was no smile or chat just gave me drinks and that was that..
I feel for £160 down to £150 per night is rather a lot for the hotel considering room size and the noise issue
The food we had was lovely and breakfast was good but shame to say I would not return for the above issues especially the noise

Hi Emma, Sorry I cannot help as we were in a room on the floor below. Enjoy your stay.
I cannot remember but most hotels seem to swipe a credit card on arrival. If you are referring to a parking fee the hotel does not charge but the carpark is small with a narrow entrance. If you were to have to park in the public car park opposite you would need to pay.
It's close to the school, but I think you will need to get a cab.
