Nestled in a prime location, Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa offers travelers the chance to explore local attractions from the comfort of spacious lodges, which, while roomy, are often criticized for appearing dated and not well-maintained. While the hot tubs and overall cleanliness receive praise, guests have called out the lack of essential supplies and the disparity between cost and value.
The service and atmosphere present a dichotomy of experiences, with the friendly staff contrasted by underwhelming encounters, particularly at reception, and a mix of tidy and shabby decor throughout the property.

Slightly belated review, we stayed mid week in a Cheddar Premier during October 2020 half term. Overall it was a pleasant, relaxing and good stay. We arrived at 4pm and the lodge was ready on time, it was clean, modern and reasonably spacious. We pre ordered a high chair and cot, which we could not find on arrival and they promptly delivered, it would have been better if they mentioned this when we checked in as I had to go back to ask. The lodge itself was at the end of a row so quite private and spaced a few meters apart to the neighbour so no noise or disturbance occurred, we stayed at different Darwin Escapes before where they are packed in but here they are well spaced apart. The hot tub was great however the lights were not working and after raising they could not get the replacement parts due to lockdowns however not a major issue as too cold to be out in the dark anyway.
The pool was open but we could not use as unless you pre book before arriving its already sold out when you arrive. I partly knew this by calling in advance and decided not to use as you have to be pool ready and it was much colder to do that walk in your towel with younger children. It would be ok in summer. They did not really advertise what other activities were available and again they would have been sold out. The kids play areas is very small and suitable for little children. I used the spa for a massage and this was organised fine with COVID precautions, you still have to sign a waiver form to accept the risks involved. We used the main restaurant for takeaway and the food was delivered quickly and quality was fine. Due to restrictions the full range of activities could not be available.
The location itself is only 5 mins from Cheddar town which has a few shops, parking in Cheddar is expensive, £6 for a few hours, there are only a few free bays around for less than an hour stay. The main caves are closed indefinitely due to the pandemic which is a shame as visited a few years back and they are amazing. It’s not too far to visit Weston-Super-Mare for a day out.
Overall a nice stay in a quiet area of Somerset.

We are fairly local to this resort but booked a spa package which included us of the swimming pool and spa facilities. We had a lovely, relaxing morning and the staff that we encountered could not have been more helpful or welcoming. Even before arrival, the therapist (Mel) followed up on my enquiry very quickly and actually cared about giving us an enjoyable spa experience. It is small and I am sure that it could get very busy and crowded during the holiday season. However, as we chose a quiet time we got just what we wanted which was quiet time together and a relaxing treatment. My husband had the back, neck and shoulder massage whilst I chose the Express Facial. We were both impressed by our therapist (Gemma) and thoroughly enjoyed our treatments. Our package (which we found to be excellent value) included a 2 course lunch in the restaurant and the food was really nice. We found the restaurant itself to be light, bright, calming and tastefully furnished. All in all, a perfect birthday treat - thank you!

Stayed here for one week Monday to Monday.
We stayed in lodge 52 with hot tub.
Previous communication before arrival was impeccable, they were so helpful and put my trust back into a company I hadn’t read the strongest reviews on. Literally couldn’t fault the Facebook response.
The lodge itself was very clean and sealed from a Covid-19 perspective, it was comfortable and large, check in was simple and restricted contact, key was inside lodge so again less people touching it. Hot tub was great and we were In it every evening.
The takeaway service had a good selection and delivered quick, was hot and good. The restaurant serves exactly the same food as the takeaway at the same price. Personal opinion is I think I preferred the takeaway as the food was more to takeaway standard, however service was good in restaurant and well thought out in terms of one way system etc
Staff in the main were great and very helpful, the maintenance guy was awesome at our lodge within minutes when we had a problem. Some of the team were litter picking the site and took the time to stop and ask us how we were. The reception team need to be the service beacon of cheddar however, they were miserable, not very approachable this may be because they have recently had a tough time. But they can save the complaint, a couple of times I was kept waiting and almost meant to feel like a problem, when either purchasing goods or asking a simple question. Maybe worth while in giving them a break from front of house as the other staff all had big smiles and nothing was too much trouble for them.
Shop was good and well stocked for essentials
Great location for seeing the surrounding areas
A very pleasant stay, which was clean and in an awesome lodge and amazing area😊

We were really looking forward to our first break post covid and will not be booking anything else for a while after this poor experience.
When we arrived we asked to use the toilets as our lodge wasn’t ready and were directed to a single portaloo. Whilst the restaurant toilets were open if you were eating in, the restaurant was closed so we were not allowed to use them! A portaloo at a 5 star resort has got to be a first
We finally got to our lodge, check in was later than usual to allow for a deep clean which made us happy.
When we first entered our lodge we were underwhelmed as we noticed that the sofa had collapsed in the middle. As the evening went on we started to notice cleanliness issues. Dust on pretty much everything, dirty hob, dirty feeling handles, hairs on plates, hairs in the main bathroom, HUGE cobwebs indoors, ripped paper in the bedroom and a light cover missing which was dangerous as there were live wires in display! In addition to this the hot tub had an error and would switch between heating and no heating which meant by the last night it was cold.
The next day I called reception to complain, the maintenance manager visited the lodge and shared his horror in what he saw. A new sofa was delivered and the lodge was cleaned again while we were out.
Someone called me that morning to offer compensation of £75 off our stay and a few pizzas, I politely declined and asked for a partial refund as the accommodation was substandard and dangerous for the first full night. I was told that couldn’t be authorised at resort level (even though the Manager and Regional Manager were both on site) and it would have to be escalated to head office. I don’t want compensating I want partially refunding, I don’t think it’s an unreasonable ask given we spent our first night making the lodge safe and doing the cleaners job.
To make it worse the last night we ordered a takeout which included a bottle of Prosecco to drink in our lodge - the cost £32 despite the only bottle and same bottle showing on the Darwin website being £19.99. When we called to say we didn’t want it they said we couldn’t return it because of COVID! Given we could were directed to a portaloo and stayed in a filthy lodge this is double standards at its best.
We’re back home, I’ve called again and I’m still waiting a call back - despite calling daily. Shocking service recovery and even worse a danger to health given the current situation in the world.
We’ve used Darwin Escapes before in Cornwall and thoroughly enjoyed it but this was just appalling.

We have returned today from a 4 x night break at this site with our dog Sanaa. We really looked forward to the break after enjoying a great experience in the summer of 2019 at a Devon site through Hoseasons. Unfortunately, this time our experience was disappointing overall in relation to service.
When we arrived there was an unpleasant 'eggy' smell coming from the sink. We reported this to reception and instead of an apology and being offered some complimentary refreshments we were advised to return to the cabin where Danny the Security person then said he would have a go at trying to improve things. In fairness to him he did resolve the issue. But, this situation could have been much better handled at the start by the receptionist who was completely reactive to our concerns rather than proactive.
After unpacking, we found that the dedicated shower was unusable as the bracket securing the shower hose was broken so we relied on the bath/shower combination. The twin bedroom door latch was broken and although we were not using the room it needed to be secure to prevent Sanaa from entering it.
Perhaps though what was most disappointing was that we never received our 'doggy welcome treat' package - which Sanaa got very excited by in Devon. When we inquired on leaving the same receptionist told us we should have received one but she could not provide one retrospectively! as they were not held at reception. How about being more proactive and demanding one from house staff!
Although the facilities on site are very nice your overall experience is determined by how you are treated when things go wrong or you are seeking effective service. In this case it was poor and I think management need to better train this receptionist to think more positively about the customer experience.
We will not return to this site unfortunately.

Booked a while ago for 8 ladies with big celebrations. Booked via Hoseasons. Arrived early and was allowed into our lodge early. Thank you!
We had a 4 bedroomed lodge with hot tub. Everything was in perfect condition apart from a toothbrush and bit of fluff behind the main bathroom door, but that was all I could fault the place with. There was a king sized bedroom with en-suite shower room, double bedroom with en-suite shower room and 2 twin bedrooms. There was a nice bathroom with shower over bath.
There were plenty of wardrobes and storage space. There was an iron and ironing board. Washing machine, cooker, gas hob, extractor fan, full fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster. My only suggestion/criticism would be a washer/dryer like in other lodges I have stayed in to dry the towels and robes for 8 people using a hot tub and bath/shower?
We were all given bath robes and a towel each during our stay which was a nice touch, but it was difficult to get these dry even with a small airer by a radiator.
There was an indoor pool, a spa and pool tables etc which we didn’t use. There is a bar and also a Costa coffee. The on site restaurant is ok but you are advised to book a table as we were unable to eat on the night of arrival due to there being 8 of us. We were allowed to have bar food however.
We weren’t far from Cheddar which was nice but we warned about the taxi companies! There are 2. Wait for the first company recommended by Cheddar Woods rather than use the second company. Read reviews on yell to make your own mind up! I’m saying no more. Only £5 for a journey into Cheddar and the first choice taxi driver is lovely!
Would definitely come again. Thank you.

We travelled as a family of 8 in July 2020, we opted for the Glastonbury Premiere lodge with hot tub. When we arrived many of the facilities were still closed however we were aware of this prior to arrival due to COVID-19.
The resort it self was immaculately maintained and you could see why the resort has great reviews, however the lodge which we stayed in was far from acceptable. There were items missing which were advertised like a DVD player and a welcome pack which was disappointing. The lodge and decor were very tired and the beds were generally very uncomfortable and the bed in the second double room was jammed in against the wall.
The family enjoyed the hot tub option especially with the pool being closed, it was a blessing for the children in the party, the park did daily checks on the water quality which was reassuring.
A car is essential as walking to local shops, restaurants and attractions is very difficult as there are a lack of paths, tracks or crossings to get there safely.
Overall the resort and facilities were great however the accommodation was poor in comparison.

Just returned today after a 3 night stay in the brunnel elegance premier 3. Lodge 161,Absaloutly spot on, arrived early at 13.20 instead of the 2pm check-in and the lodge was ready, situated in a fairly separate area with electric wooden gates was lovely, space for 2 cars to park, backed right onto the woods, the lodge was very clean, very big with all the mod cons, PlayStation 4 for the kids, spectacular kitchen, heated flooring, big bedrooms with our room having an ensuite and massive walk in wardrobe type thing. Big decking **non slip. Bbq and patio set, the hot tub had 6 of us in and there was still room for more lol
Bathroom had an amazing free standing bath with TV built in the wall, kids loved that 👍 towel heater radiators the tall long ones.
Now we had problems with the hot tub loosing it's heat, didn't cause a huge problem as the hot tub guys on site sorted it for us, the minuite you call reception they are there to help immediately.
My oldest used the pool there but we just made the most out of what we had payed for **the lodge :)
Bar and restaurant is nice, we didn't eat there but did have a drink, cooked every night with the well equipped kitchen.
This stay was for my birthday and could not have been any better, even with the hot tub issues at first. The park is quiet at the top where we was, as no one actually comes past at the top. Will. Definitely be returning for 7nights next time.
I read alot of bad reviews and for what we payed was nervous about it but honestly I cannot see what people are moaning about.
Even a nice touch with a bottle of prosseco in the fridge for us on arrival.
See you again chedder Woods 👌👌🥇🏆

We booked our lodge early March after staying at another site.
We arrived at 4:45 and were net at the barrier for check in which was swift and directed to our lodge.
It wasin a lovely spot with great views.
The lodge was clean and presentable, the menu for the restaurant was pinned up and a phone number to call for meals to be delivered to you.
We unpacked everything and settled for a rest before deciding to have the restaurant take away service.
We ordered and within 20 minutes our food was delivered fresh and hot. Perfect
We did have a lean in the main bedroom but a phone call to reception a member of maintenance attended immediately, followed by 2 bundles of towels if needed and the next day it was fully repaired.
These things happen, it didn't spoil anything for us.
The hot tub was outstanding and really enhanced the stay.
The park is in a great spot and not far from anywhere but nice to be somewhere without lots of light pollution.
Our week went fast and we were soon packing to leave, we packed on the morning of departure and left the dishwasher running with our breakfast dishes in and left at 8:55, having thought a 9am departure was early it actually wasn't.
The only thing I missed in the lodge was a cafeteria, teapot and colinder, but the hot tub more than made up for them.
Thanks Cheddar Woods and Team.

Our original break to Cheddar Woods booked for 30th March was cancelled so we rescheduled for October half term. The lodge we had originally booked had doubled in price however and we couldn't afford £1200 for a midweek break.
We booked an Axbridge Lodge and it was beautiful, it had everything we needed, was warm, comfortable and the deck had a beautiful view towards Glastonbury.
Darwin Escapes, please don't take this is a slight, it really isn't; arrival times and departure times have changed now to allow for additional cleaning. We arrived at 5.30 on the Monday (the clocks went back on Saturday night) by which time it was already pitch black, we were given a set of verbal directions to find our lodge but trying to find it in the dark and rain was a challenge! My recommendation would be to illuminate the number posts on each lodge.
We didn't use the swimming pool as changing facilities are closed so you need to pre-book a slot, turn up swim ready then either walk or drive back to your lodge in a bathing robe.
The farm shop on-site wasn't amazing but there is a small Tesco and Sainsbury's in Cheddar. We had a couple of walks around Cheddar, visited Farrington's Farm and also went into Wells which is beautiful.
We are hoping to book a getaway to Hawkchurch next as this is closer to us and looks lovely.

Sorry, just seen this. No there are no EV charging points. My son had to drive somewhere.
Yes I would recommend it is a really nice site but it is very quiet and the bar and restaurant do shut early there's some nice places to visit though with cheddar gorge just down the road and the city of wells is about 20 minutes away by car.although the gorge is not to far away it aint suitable to walk due to lack of pavements
