The Luttrell Arms is a 3 star, 28 room hotel. Set in the medieval village of Dunster with its many interesting buildings, a short walk from the famous Dunster Castle and within the Exmoor National Park. The privately owned 14th century Luttrell Arms is surrounded by beautiful countryside making it the ideal destination for that weekend break or midweek getaway. Stroll around the village, walk the moor, or just sit by a log fire in a building where hospitality has been a way of life for hundreds of years. Heritage "If you could bottle the air in the bar at the Luttrell Arms and sell it you'd clean up" so wrote a local journalist. The smell of logs burning on the fire, a hint of hops from the pints of ale, add to this the smell of something aromatic being cooked in the kitchen, and the most essential element - the smell of history, it oozes out of the walls which have stood for 800 years. There are many outstanding architectural features, the medieval hall with its hammer beam roof (room 17) and twelve light window. History seeps out of the blackened frames, which had their glass rattled loose as Cromwell’s gunners laid siege to Dunster Castle from a defended strong point at the end of the garden. Cromwell’s Commander, Col. Robert Blake walked the corridors of the hotel, it was then called the Ship Inn and was used as his headquarters throughout the siege of the castle. Also of note is some very fine plasterwork on the ceiling of the lounge downstairs, and the plaster over mantle in room 12, showing Actaeon being devoured by hounds. The Arms of Luttrell that we use today carry us back to a Gentleman of 1261, the crest takes us only back to 1621, but the supporters are directly derived from one of the Barons who coerced King John into sealing Magna Carta. A more modern visitor is Hercule Poirot. In "The Cornish Mystery" he confronts the murderer in one of the hotel’s bedrooms.

Nestled in a prime location, The Luttrell Arms is hailed for its quaint charm and historical allure. Guests revel in the cozy atmosphere, complete with antique touches and inviting nooks. The spacious rooms are celebrated for their comfort, though taller guests might wish for longer beds. The hotel staff's friendliness is often praised, although their efficiency occasionally falls under scrutiny.
Cleanliness is a standout feature, with travelers noting the pristine conditions. While the hotel's value is recognized, especially given its historical significance, some visitors consider the dining options slightly overpriced. The amenities, including the cozy bars and picturesque gardens, are well-received, despite a desire for more varied relaxation spaces.

Detailed Reviews
Lovely little hotel in the pretty village of Dunster in the shadow of Dunster Castle. The hotel is quaint with winding corridors and loads of character. The room we stayed in was one of the nicest I have ever experienced - clean and modern bathroom, great wifi, very comfortable bed, good lighting (so you can read in bed), and doors out to a semi private and pretty garden.
The hotel has a good restaurant; real effort is taken over the food (it is definitely not "pub grub") and it is pretty reasonable (starters under a tenner, mains around GBP20 to GBP30, wine starting at around GBP 25). You can have the same menu in the atmospheric bar. Or there is a pizza oven in the garden - I should say "gardens" as there are a series of five or six interconnecting outdoor spaces, all of which are very pleasant. In the morning choose the Exmoor breakfast and you probably won't need lunch (along with the "full English" there is fruit, cereal and croissants etc): or there are lots of alternatives such as salmon and scrambled eggs or eggs benedict. (NB: there isn't much choice of places to eat dinner in the village so booking for dinner in the hotel is sensible).
The hotel doesn't have a carpark but you can park all day for free on the street outside (if you are lucky) or there is a public carpark a couple of minutes walk away (I'd suggest stopping on a double yellow and dropping bags off at the hotel before parking if you can't get a spot in the high street): the hotel reimburse the parking charges if you have to use the car park.
Dunster is a good spot to stay for a night or two (or more). The (National Trust) castle is well worth a look - don't miss the waterwheel and the water gardens accessible from West Street. The north Somerset coast is worth a trip as well (Porlock weir is nice although some parts of the coast are very trippery). But the main reason to come to this part of the world has to be Exmoor, one of the prettiest parts of the UK.
All in all, we had a very pleasant couple of days at this friendly and welcoming little place and I would love to stay again.

Have stayed at the luttrell arms hotel many times in the past & always enjoyed, but this year superseded all others on every level.
The reception staff were helpful & friendly at time of booking, our room was spotless & welcoming on arrival, with a well stocked beverage drawer which included tasty biscuits too.everyday the housekeeping team cleaned perfectly & always replenished shower gel,loo roll etc.when needed & fresh towels too.
Breakfast has a large varied selection, always cooked freshly to order & we were always greeted to a cheery 'good morning.' We ate in the bar a number of times, again, quality of food exceptional, not the biggest choice selection but what they do cook is top quality.i can't praise ALL the hospitality staff highly enough, charming, polite & friendly, 'J' (possibly Jason is his full name) & Jules were lovely. The beautiful garden & Dunster village outside the hotel make this a must stay place.
Will continue to re-visit.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay following a big family holiday in Devon. Having spent many years running hotels, I like to think that I know what to look for. The management team certainly know what they are doing. I tend to rate a hotel by the quality of their food and the service offered. Both breakfast and dinner were of a high quality with attentive well trained and knowledgeable staff. We had a small double on the second floor which was fine for us. Room and bathroom were spotless, with a safety grab handle in the bath and toiletries that you didn’t need your glasses to see what they were! Lots of quiet areas to sit and read and a wonderful garden with a residents sitting area. Spent the two days exploring the village and we will have to return to catch the bits we missed.

I've been coming to The Luttrell Arms for over twenty years. It's always been a fave of mine and my family and I have recommended it to dozens of friends over the years. I also work locally and send a lot of customers there with a glowing review. However I was recently informed by more than one them that they'd had a bad experience so feeling a little responsible, I thought I'd see for myself if their feedback was unfounded. I have left a review before but feel compelled to write another after having visited twice here in the past week. Once in the restaurant and once in the bar. The bar staff although new, were polite and helpful if not a tad confused. The manageress however not so polite or helpful and when we requested a different table, responded in an abrupt and overly loud manner, pretty much suggesting that it was our fault they couldn't accommodate us as we hadn't booked. I politely - but firmly - informed her that we had booked but we had been told on the phone that we couldn't reserve a specific table. When I requested a different table on arrival (ours was close to the door) all the other tables were empty but had reserved signs on) I was told that it wasn't possible as these other tables had been specifically requested, despite being told on the phone when I booked thay they were on a first-come first-serve basis - go figure! We had arrived early for this very reason. Anyway, we opted for a table in the front bar but there was a service-point less than two feet away from my chair and the same distance to the bar which would have become noisy and busy with customers and staff alike walking through the narrow room. By now we were feeling a tad unloved so we opted to go up to the terrace and try a pizza. They give you a buzzer so you can pick it up at the pizza bar and take it back to your table. When I asked the chef for some sauces he gestured toward the pay-
point at the bar. I went there with my freshly baked pizza in hand to find no staff there. I returned to the pizza bar to tell them this and asked if they could give me some mayonnaise. They pretty much shrugged saying I couldn't use the sauces they had there in bottles as I had to pay for packet sauces. My pizza although delicious was getting less hot by the second and I was left to return to my table with no mayonnaise. Not a huge problem on the grand scale of things but we found the whole process quite tiresome. and somewhat less than memorable. My experience in the restaurant however was slightly better because we had a wonderful waiter on Sunday 11th August. He was polite, attentive and extremely welcoming. However...the manager who had been rushing around like an Olympian found fault with something he'd done and pulled him up on it for all to hear. I found this acutely embarrassing on behalf of this wonderfully professional waiter. and left feeling underwhelmed. I now understand why my friend's experience of this once friendly and charming hotel was less than he had been promised by myself. In his words.. they have simply become an impersonal cash-cow. Such a shame! Polite request - to please look after your staff better and maybe respond to your negative reviews with positivity and not excuses.

Thank you for your detailed review. It appears to be that on the day of your visit we were rather busy and the staff under some pressure. Our pizzas are served with a choice of homemade crust dips which you order from the till with your pizza, not served in sachets, however ketchup and mayonnaise are available if you prefer this. With regards to the table reservations, we cannot promise specific tables unless you are a resident guest staying with us in the hotel, in which case we will do whatever we can to fulfil your specific request. We are ultimately running a business, trying to accommodate and fulfil the wishes and requirements of day visitors, locals and those staying in our hotel. Whilst it would be nice if we could allow the customers to make all their own table arrangements we would not be able to accommodate all those who would like to dine with us. I think it us the personal nature of the hotel, the kind and compassionate staff that always go the extra mile to make the guest experience special; on any given day we may welcome many guests and visitors through our doors and we try tirelessly to ensure that each is given special and personal attention, their favourite room or table, understandably this isn't always possible but i can assure you we always do our best.

My husband and I had a drink in their very spacious pretty Secret Garden after a walkabout in Dunster village
during increasingly hot weather on the first full day of our visit. The barman was very helpful with our choice of local beer and cider and quickly found us a bar menu on request. The dishes looked inviting so we reserved a bar table for one evening later that week. We shared a a substantial starter between us which comprised of blue cheese, butterbean hummous and pate and we both chose Seafood Risotto as main courses - they were excellent, very attractively presented, fish content was plentiful and all very tasty. The wine list is quite extensive and includes some 0% drinks, useful for drivers and/or those who don't partake of alcohol. Will shall return on our next visit to Dunster!

A very attractive hotel in the centre of the beautiful village of Dunster. Popped in for something to eat in the evening as we could find nowhere else open for food. It looked on the expensive side, but proved otherwise. A lovely experience to be seated in the residents' lounge area. The menu was the same as that offered in the main restaurant, and our table was well placed and the chairs comfortable.
The menu was fine and we made our choices. We enjoyed our food and the waiting staff were attentive. We both had the lamb burger with halloumi.
It would be nice to return, perhaps as a weekend getaway.

I cannot praise this hotel enough. I include both the location, the actual building and all the staff. It is incredible good value for money and probably the most welcoming place I have ever stayed. I had had a horrible accident the day before I arrived and hurt my back. I needed extra help throughout my week long visit and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Furniture was moved around in the room as soon as I asked for it, restaurant and bar staff ran around after me and reception staff constantly enquired how I was doing. The owner even came to see me at breakfast to ask how I was. I was feeling very down but the hotel did everything possible to make me feel better. Thank you so much. We will most definitely be back.

We dined here whilst staying elsewhere in Dunster.
It was going to be a treat but, unfortunately, our experience was not as good as some previous reviews.
We selected it as it offered dog friendly dining and we had a table in the bar which was busy with people just drinking.
Despite the menu being priced the same as the restaurant, which would be a full waitress service, you have to go up to the bar and order drinks and food as you would in a pub chain.
After having to get our own menus, my husband ordered and our starter, wild garlic mushrooms, blue cheese and poached eggs on sourdough toast arrived a little while later. It was hot and tasty but the toast was rock hard and there was only one, rather overcooked egg, instead of the plural eggs. It was also somewhat greasy.
The mains were the lamb burger, which I really enjoyed, and fish and chips. Unfortunately, the chips were raw in the middle and the batter on the fish was oozing oil. As we had let the starter go uncommented on, my husband did complain about his meal.
This was dealt with swiftly and apologetically with it being removed from the bill. We were also offered a complimentary desert or drink which we declined as we didn’t feel that was necessary.
Overall, the place seemed a tad disorganised. It was very busy so perhaps, as a lot of places are, they are struggling for staff and when it is busy, there just aren’t enough hands on deck. However, our complaint was dealt with effectively and without fuss.
The place is stunning inside, very much in keeping with the feel of Dunster and it’s history.
Also on the plus side, we had got thorough soaked walking from the other end of the village but we were provided with a towel to rub our dogs down and to wrap their sodden coats in whilst we ate. Thanks Chrissie, that was very thoughtful.
If there was the option to give 3.5 stars, that would reflect our opinion but have erred on the lower side as two from thee of the dishes weren’t great. With a bill that would have been close to £90 for 1.5 courses and wine before the reduction, 3 it is. We went for the food and felt it didn’t represent good value for money on this occasion.
Would we go back? I feel we would, but we were disappointed that our expectations weren’t met this time.

We have enjoyed many lovely meals at the Luttrell over the years. The ambience is lovely and the food is always wonderful.
However the last twice we have been there have been a few issues which did dent our experiences somewhat. On the first occasion, we were with a friend who is allergic to sulphides (preservatives commonly found in bread, wine and spices). We had checked in advance and been told that our waiter would be able to provide the allergen information. She wasn't. When she checked with the kitchen staff, we were told to avoid potatoes. This was somewhat surprising, but we changed our order accordingly. When the food arrived (already rather delayed) the wrong order had been cancelled, and so one of our party had to wait longer for the correct order.
On the second occasion, we had booked some weeks in advance. The time we were hoping for was not available and so the booker initially plumped for a later time. However, after consulting with the rest of the party, we decided the earlier time offered would be preferable. We telephoned back some five minutes after the original call and requested the time of our booking be changed, and were told that this would be no problem. However when we arrived at the earlier time (6.30) we were shown to our table but told that our booking was still for 7.45. We explained what had happened and the waitress acknowledged that this wasn't our fault. But she also made it clear that her priority was another party who had booked for 6.15.
We were initially willing to be a bit flexible, and asked for some foccacia and olives while we waited. Our order was eventually taken at about 7.15. By this time, the other party had ordered their food, received their drinks and finished their starters. The foccacia and olives arrived (after we chased again) about 7.30. The tap water never materialised. By the time our main courses arrived, we were hungry and tired, and frantically texting our babysitter to check that she was able to stay later than planned.
It turned out that instead of amending our booking, a new booking had been made for 6.30 in the restaurant rather than the bar. It is therefore unclear why the kitchen should have found it so difficult to accommodate us at this time.
Nobody apologised for the error or for the fact that we were inconvenienced as a result. It might have been a nice gesture to not charge for the foccacia, but this was not offered. Instead, our waitress made it clear that we were a great inconvenience and she couldn't possibly be expected to look after our table and this other party at the same time.
The food was as delicious as ever, and so we are likely to return to the Lutt (especially given that there are few alternatives in the local area); but I do hope the service can be improved back up to the standard it used to be.

Had the loveliest one night stay in this charming hotel. We chose the 'celebrations' package and when we were taken to our room we were greeted with the most gorgeous flowers, champagne and chocolates as well as the bed beautifully decorated! We had a finest room which had a little terrace overlooking Dunster Castle and also led out onto the garden.
We had dinner and breakfast included of which the food was excellent and the lovely staff were very attentive and helpful which was much appreciated.

Hi! Yes, we have a ground floor room (Room 1) which has a large walk in shower. There is also a separate bath tub in the bathroom.
Maybe best to avoid dog friendly places if you dislike them so much?No smell of dog here anyway.
No idea, I'm afraid. Never stayed there although we plan to in the future.
Sorry - just seen this
I can't add to this, other than there are also larger car parks in the castle with a private entrance to the hotel from what I recollect
Will ask next time I go there which will be Friday
