We spent three nights at The Ancient Gatehouse and enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing stay there. On arrival we were greeted in a very friendly manner - almost like old friends. We were able to park along Cathedral Green (just a few metres from the hotel) making it very easy for the luggage. The famous room 9 is located at the top of a twisty 14c spiral staircase and not suitable for frail or elderly residents - however, the room was very cosy and the adjoining bathroom had a superb shower with plenty of hot water. The breakfasts were excellent (cooked by a lovely Irish lady) and kept us going all day. We ate in the busy hotel Italian Restaurant each night and tried a number of pasta dishes and steak (which the chef specially cooked in a pizzaiola sauce for us) - all of our meals were excellent. The staff were exceptional - even though they were busy, they weren't too busy to stop and have a quick chat. You could sense that they all worked well as a team and actually described themselves to us as "one big family". We shall definitely be visiting again!

Starting with the great bits. Room 7 has a fantastic view. From the bed you have a terrific view of the cathedral and if you open the window you can hear the bells chime. The bed is very comfortable, the bedding warm an immaculate. The pillows were also very comfy. The lady serving breakfast was engaging and genuine. The breakfast offering was generous and perfectly cooked. It could have only been made better if it were served in the room overlooking the cathedral. Now the not so good bits - the stairs to room 7 seemed almost vertical and we had no prior knowledge that the climb would be so arduous - be warned that the view comes with a price. The room was cold. None of the radiators were on and although there was an electric heater in one of the cupboards it wasn’t suitable for the coldest part of the room - the bathroom. A well appointed bathroom but the lovely floor tiles make it even colder. The tv room has an emergency exit door which by the sounds of it leads into a bathroom , a bit of soundproofing here would not go amiss. The room had a smell which we could not pin down,

Visited with friends, staff were welcoming. Calamari starter a bit tough but other starters all good. Pizza was very good but large, so worth sharing with a side salad, seafood linguine, gnocchi and steak all well received, as was ice cream. Only critique is that staff need to be aware that people intolerant to gluten can't have sauces thickened with flour- gf person nearly had sauce that wasn't suitable, however- explained and chef made a perfect sauce. We would eat here again, atmosphere good.

Room 9 in the gatehouse sounded lovely with its amazing view and character. Having finally found parking nearby we checked in only to establish that both the bar and recommended restaurant were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The old stone spiral staircase to our room was littered with dirty laundry which was quickly removed. Wow what a fabulous room albeit accessing the adjacent bathroom was rather disconcerting during the night. Elation was short lived however, on closer inspection the room was extemely dusty on most surfaces and obviously had not been cleaned thoroughly for some time. As no staff were available after 6pm the situation couldn't be rectified. We left without breakfast the following morning bitterly dissapointed. Two e.mails have been sent to the hotel expressing our dissatisfaction but received no response. Such a potentially lovely room and hotel which obviously relies on its location rather than customer service and attention to detail.

We booked this hotel the night before our stay in Well, so there wasn't much choice but we weren't disappointed. We stayed in Room 2 which had a four poster bed and looked out onto the street at the front. It was clean and comfortable, the shower was good with plenty of hot water. Everything was adequate, but it was very warm in the night even with the windows open, it would have been good to have had a fan, but the reception desk is not manned once the restaurant downstairs closes. Our booking stated that checkout was by 11am, but someone knocked our door at 10am to see if we'd left which was a little odd. We would definately stay here again, but would ask for a room with a cathedral view next time.
