And when I say scary I don't mean ghosts although this ancient building must surely be hosting a few. We arrived to a rather cold greeting from the desk attendant and I declined help with my luggage. However, I soon discovered that the staircase was more suited to a mountain climber than to an aging traveller. It was also none...

Well what can I say but a gem. Loved my 3night stay here. Yes quirky n old but that just adds to it especially in this part of England. I will return but next time with the wife as I know she would love it too. Restaurant at night changes to a full Italian experience n the food is just...

Our room was right at the top of the hotel up a very narrow, twisty staircase which could be a problem for anyone not reasonably fit! We were not informed of this when we booked. The room was fine overlooking the cathedral with a recently upgraded bathroom. However this was lacking a few necessities - a toilet roll holder; a...

We have stayed many time for business in this part of the world only to be disappointed, we were not expecting much from this hotel but I'm so pleased to say we changed our minds, from the minute we walked through the door to a very friendly welcome from the lady in reception to the minute we checked out. The...

if you want a room with horizontal floors and ceilings and vertical walls, like you'd find in a Travelodge or any more upmarket version of one, then the Ancient Gatehouse Hotel in Wells is not for you. If however you want a surfeit of oak beams, the odd creaking floorboard, narrow wooden or worn stone circular staircases, with all that...

Very, very old hotel. Dirty carpets, broken sofa in the sitting area, rattling window panes, all manner of sounds coming from other rooms, bed too short for my 6 foot body by about 8 inches, and food smells coming up into my bedroom from the kitchen all day and night. Great location however and nice people running it. Just badly...

Lovely room overlooking the green and Wells Cathedral, could not get a better location or view. Room was immaculate with a modern bathroom. Breakfast was tasty and had everything that could be wanted. Parking was a short walk to Waitrose. The stairs to the room were very steep - no problem for us, but those guests who might find this...

Five of us booked in for the weekend & we weren't disappointed. One couple had a room overlooking the green & Wells Cathedral & the rest of us had lovely, comfortable four poster beds. There was a bit of noise from the street outside but it didn't last long. It's a very old building so don't expect anything too modern but...

Anyone visiting the magnificent Wells Cathedral should consider the Ancient Gate House Hotel located right at the cathedral grounds. The hotel itself is small (nine rooms) and old. Our room (#7) was at the top of the narrow windy stairs. But it was quirky in a fun way and comfortable and had a modern bathroom with a shower. The view...
