This hotel in in an ideal position for Cardiff and the Bay. We even walked over to Penarth. It was clean and had everything we needed in the room. Hair dryer, iron etc. The staff in this hotel were just fabulous nothing too much trouble always smiling and cheerful and so very helpful. The chambermaid the breakfast, bar and reception staff should be commended for making our stay brilliant. Our deal included breakfast which was good and the room rate was particularly reasonable Thankyou very much

A Holiday Inn Express hotel is what I would best describe as a "functional stay" rather than a hotel experience. A bed, a breakfast and parking (charged of course). It was very clean, the staff we're very pleasant and the room was good. Setting that aside and bearing in mind that Cardiff hosted a large sporting event the weekend we stayed, the price point for a two night stay in a standard room was a staggering £860!! Did it represent good value, certainly not. Would I stay here again, yes, at the rate that was a third of the price advertised prior to the event. Supply and demand, I guess so but £140 sort of a £1000, wow. For that kind of money elsewhere, Id expect a "hotel experience" if Im honest.

My wife took me there for Valentines night, we are IHG members and have used Holiday inn all over the world, the staff were excellent and the late checkout next day meant we spent a day there, I cannot say enough good things about the hotel and staff, the breakfast was excellent as well and I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Within a 10 minute easy walk to the WMC in Cardiff Bay the Holiday Inn Express offered the best deal of other hotels in the local area. Check in was smooth, the hotel was very clean and the service from all staff was excellent. The breakfast had plenty of choice and the cooked buffet food was hot and well presented. The room, 106, had been prepared with care and was larger than I had expected. We did use the bar and prices were reasonable. We only found one fault and we are not sure if the constant repetitive noise is from inside the hotel or outside. At night there is a continuous low sound similar to a heating unit or compressor running. It lasts for exactly 18 seconds and then goes off for one second. It wasn't noticeable in the day, only when we tried to sleep. Despite a very comfortable bed the noise continually woke us during our one night stay.

Lovely room overlooking the water. Comfortable double bed and a pull down sofa. Air con was great. We are going back in a few days mostly due to the wonderful way that Sabrina and Carly looked after us. They were pushed and pulled due to staff shortages but the smile never fell from their faces. Well done. You deserve a bonus. The food was good and the outdoor seating area comfortable. Will smokers please use the ashtrays and not put your buts on the outside terrace and stand on them. Staff should not need to clean these. It is not their job, it is your responsibility!!!! Bar prices fair and not far to walk into Cardiff. Highly recommended. See you very soon. Thanks guys.

I had an excellent night's sleep and a refreshing shower in the morning. At check-in and check-out I encountered the very helpful Liam. I passed on my only concern about the facilities and he took it seriously and promised to pass it on. Breakfast had a good selection of options and staff were on hand to help with anything.

Hotel and room were really nice and is in a good location for Cardiff Bay and the city centre. The reception staff and bar staff were very helpful and friendly. However, having paid £168 for one night to be charged a further £10 to park in their own car park is a bit of a rip off. The breakfast buffet was very disappointing and in my opinion sub standard. The food was at best warm and the sausages and bacon poor quality. The bacon was swimming in grease. The orange juice from the machine was nothing more than watered down squash. A nicely located hotel badly let down by the breakfast.

Reception: The ladies at reception are very nice and welcoming, especially Sabina. Room / facilities: Room number 311 is on the 3rd floor and is clean with a water view. Oddly, they don’t make up a room daily, unless requested. This service has no additional cost. The 2 single beds are jointed to make a king bed, there is a small clothes hanging area, little bathroom, chair and desk, with tea and coffee facilities. There is no fridge in the room, but reception will keep a small amount of items in the hotel fridge. Self control air conditioning with a window that opens about 5 cm. Parking: Is shared between the Holiday Inn Express and Staybridge hotels, and can fit about 35 cars. Parking is £10 per night, and registration must be provided. Wifi: Complementary and good speed. No validation or password required. Breakfast: This was part of our room package. The traditional English buffet breakfast is from 7.00am to 11.00am and consists of cereals, yogurt, breads (to toast) jams and spreads, fresh fruits, pastries, eggs, bacon, baked beans, sausages, juices, tea and coffee. It was noticed that even at 9:00 am refills of milk, and food was slow to come. Conclusion: Great location, nice staff, comfortable bed. Letdowns: No fridge in the room, possibility of not getting car parking upon your return to the hotel. Location / Nearby: Cardiff Waterfront is a 10 minute walk, Cardiff City is a 15 min walk. Both walks are on flat ground and easy to do. Beware: No matter where you drive to, payment for parking is required. Most parking meters accept coin and card “tap” facilities. Generally after 6.00pm or 8.00pm parking is free, in designated locations. Getting to hotel: Best use GPS

I recently stayed for one night for business and as far as the staff, room and hotel in general goes, it was all pretty good. There was a bit of an issue on the bar with a young chap who was clearly new and had to rely on customers to direct him to the spirits they had ordered (think Play Your Cards Right but without any Bruce Bonuses). After getting bored of queuing for a drink I got a bottle of water from a vending machine right next to the bar, presumably installed there for people who couldn’t wait any longer. Nevertheless, bed was comfortable, room was clean, breakfast was good. However, be warned, there is VERY limited parking and on arriving at around 18:30 I was advised to park my car on the street (quite a deserted road with lots of foot traffic at night). I noticed some people giving up and parking on double yellows just outside the hotel car park. My parking experience after driving over 300 miles, was very, very disappointing and drags my rating down from a 4 to a 2. Oh well, I won’t be using this hotel again…

Response from Karen Matthews, Owner at Holiday Inn Express Cardiff Bay, an IHG Hotel
Responded 20 May 2022
Dear Rohan C - Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review following your recent experience with us. The hospitality industry, along with many others is really struggling at the moment with recruitment. One of the reasons is given for this is that sometimes it can be very challenging to meet guest demands - and the pressure is on to get up to speed and fully efficient straight away. This can be really stressful and daunting, especially for someone who has chosen to join the industry. Many of these are young people who are trying to learn how to deliver customer service for the first time. Quite often, after negative experiences with guests they decide that it's not for them. All we ask is a little kindness and patience and I'm confident that things will start to improve. We all had to start somewhere! The vending machine is there as an option for drinks and snacks available 24 hours per day - but of course I appreciate your feedback with regards to the time you had to wait to order and I'm pleased that you were able to benefit from it's location. Our car park actually, is one of the largest around in the area - and is first come first serve. We direct those who are unable to park onto Schooner Way, as it's a well lit street only 1 minute walk from the hotel - with the added bonus of being free between the hours of 6pm and 8am. We'd rather parking didn't happen on double yellow lines as these are marked out to ensure easy access for deliveries, emergency vehicles if they were ever needed and taxis etc. It's a shame that you chose to halve your original score because of this, but of course I again appreciate the feedback and thank you again for the time taken to write your review. Kind Regards Karen Matthews General Manager

There is basically no parking here after 6pm. I am a Diamond Elite member and so spend a lot of money with IHG and I was not allowed to park outside a marked bay even though I was not blocking anyone in. I paid £10 a night parking upfront and you are not gaurnteed a place. Normally I wouldnt bother with a review but now Im cross having to park my truck with tools on an open street, I shall mention the poor quality of the food served at breakfast with fatty pale bacon and anemic sausages dripping in grease. I will not stay here again.

Responded 11 May 2022
Dear alanhM395SI - Thank you for taking the time to leave this valuable feedback. Firstly, thank you for being a valued Diamond Elite member of IHG 1 Rewards. There are a number of benefits included with this for you, including welcome amentities and bonus points, however car parking is not part of the scheme. We are unable to reserve spaces for any of our guests and do state that it is first come first serve - with additional parking very nearby which we can direct our guests to on the occasions that our car park is full - which does happen depending on occupancy and of course how many people bring cars with them. The £10 for parking which you may have paid would have been refunded straight away. The reason that we prefer not to let cars park outwith marked bays is to keep the car park clear should the need arise for emergency services, deliveries and of course turning points for vehicles. I do understand why you would be frustrated but hope that this goes some way to explaining why this has been the case. Kind Regards - Karen Matthews, General Manager
