Nestled in a prime location, the Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel & Spa offers guests scenic views and ample space, though some have voiced concerns over the rooms' dated decor and cleanliness. While convenient for exploring downtown, diners and travelers alike note that the value is diminished by additional costs for parking, spa services, and what's perceived as pricey food and beverages.
Amenities have received mixed reviews, particularly the pool and spa areas, and while the hotel's atmosphere is generally modern, opinions are split regarding its overall charm. The service quality also ranges from professional to underwhelming, with inconsistency being a common theme.

I arrived on Fri evening after a 4 hr train journey. Receptionist was pleasant & efficient though a little difficult to understand her English at times. I went straight up to my room on the 10th floor & was greeted by 2 pieces of huge artwork as I got off the lift, which had been ‘enhanced’ with rugby kit; which I thought was quite humorous.
I was impressed by the size & the facilities in my room. There was tea & coffee making facilities with decent size cups. A hairdryer was provided but wasn’t very powerful (not too bothersome to me with my short hair) but ladies with mid to long hair should probably take their own. A safe, plus iron & ironing board was also provided (didn’t use these) & lots of wardrobe space with plenty of hangers.
I went straight down for dinner. I had a steak burger, which was one of the tastiest I have ever had. Bit disappointed there was only one choice of cider available.
I had a bath & as I had been in for a while decided to top up the hot water. The taps are located in the middle of the bath & the water is directed right where your legs are. The water is incredibly powerful & hot so it burnt/scolded my left leg; there should be a sign warning about this as the water felt like it was out of the kettle. I told the receptionist when I checked out next morning but she wasn’t particularly concerned & asked rather casually if I was ok, whilst still clicking on her computer, & said she’d have maintenance look at it. I would have thought it should go in an accident book, whilst I did not require medical intervention I do have a red mark.
Whist the bed was huge it was not comfortable at all & I had to sleep to one side as there’s a very uncomfortable join in the middle; felt very much like sleeping on a camp bed. There were 4 pillows but they were flat on their own but too high when using 2 together.
I was impressed with the shower in the morning; the temp was good & being able to adjust the flow was nice. It was a good size cubicle.
Breakfast was not great, sausages were anaemic looking, scrambled eggs, hash brown & mushrooms were luke warm. After trying each component I ended up leaving it. Took me a while to explain to the waitress Id like a pot for my tea. Patrons have to get their own tea/coffee using the tiny cups on their table (I didn’t want to keep getting up & down to re-fill), trying to explain this was a challenge. I had to ask for soya milk as it wasn’t readily available.
Not a bad stay but wouldn’t rush to come back.

Upon arriving, we could not find the entrance to the car park as there is construction going on and the roads were blocked with a huge crane and a big truck with a crane ! Upon asking at the hotel reception, they were as nice as could be and moments later the truck was moved to allow access to the small underground car park. Beware the 1.8m height restriction !!
Having checked in (a seamless and straightforward event) we got to a very reasonable sized, pleasant room with views out over the city. Shame about the weather, but that's Wales. Everything was spotlessly clean and the bathroom with its separate shower was most comfortable.
The bed was fitted with poorly fitting sheets that rucked up easily, and I felt the duvet was a bit on the thin side for mid-winter, especially as the air conditioning seemed to be unable to achieve the 24° it was set to.
Even though we were located on the 11th floor, I could still hear a considerable amount of city traffic noise in the main road outside until about 0100, and again from about 0500.
We headed down to the bar / restaurant area around 6pm and having collected drinks were shown to a table in the open plan eating area and provided with menus that covered a really good range of tastes. Our orders were taken promptly and food arrived to table just as quickly which was great (we were both hungry).
The food was both hot, tasty and plentiful, so we really enjoyed our dishes.
We both finished up with a dessert which was excellent.
A reasonable night's sleep followed, slightly cooler than I might have liked under the thin duvet.
We opted for an early cooked breakfast as we had to be out for an appointment promptly, so a rapid checkout was going to be really useful and with only a couple of minutes wait for other guests to do the same, the process was completed cheerfully and smoothly.
Service and food both excellent. Thank you !

Really dissapointed with today. The lockers in the women's changing rooms are all broken and the attendant was trying to fix one that we could use to store our stuff safely. The pool was dirty and cloudy and the toilets ans showers are in major need of a revamp. The afternoon tea was average, however the staff were very nice. Such a shame that not all parts of the hotel are to the same standard as the entrance and restaurant area.

We arrived today for what we thought would be an enjoyable experience. 4 of us went and had all recieved a spa experience with afternoon tea for a Christmas present. When we arrived we were told that we didn't get the use of a robe or slippers as we were not booked in for a treatment but we would have a towel each. In the changing rooms it took us about 20 minutes to actually get more than one working locker and we saw others struggle. There was a sign up saying the sauna was out of order due to work being carried out so we were unable to use this, this wasn't such an issue but the spa package only permits you to use pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. After our spa experience which was very busy we went off to use the showers with our very wet towels that we had been given for the use after the pool and showers. When we arrived at afternoon tea we were shown to our table and asked if we had any allergies/dietary requirements, my daughter can be fussy so we asked what sandwiches they had. The waitress said they were unable to make anything different but asked if she liked cheese to which she replied yes. The waitress said OK I'll bring you the vegetarian option, this arrived with one cheese sandwich full of pickle and 2 other option's. The cakes were a different story, stodgy and not enjoyable. 3 out of the 4 of us do not like raisins so I asked if they did an alternative scone to which the answer was NO! We found the waitress to unhelpful and unapproachable. All in all I would not recommend the experience and Im glad we received this as a Christmas present because if I had paid the £59 which is what they charge for this, I would be sat at home crying into a large wine right now!

The staff here are lovely, couldn’t be more friendly and helpful. If it wasn’t for their service we would have had a terrible stay. The hotel reception is lovely and the bar/restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and design.
The rooms however are not four star, they are really in need of a revamp. They don’t match the entrance at all.
I wouldn’t recommend a spa break here until the rooms are updated, staff learn not to leave food lying around outside the lift all day and the spa has more capacity for treatments.
The position in Cardiff is excellent so if you want a nights stay in central Cardiff with lovely staff then I would recommend.

I will keep this with you as simple as I possibly can. We really enjoyed the stay at this hotel the bed was extremely comfortable the pillows were very comfortable was very difficult not to fall asleep when we lay on the bed. There were some problems mostly around to the fact that covid-19 left the hotel with significantly less staff than usual and as a result we had to be moved three times because of problems with the rooms and the air conditioning units but we did finally after being upgraded get a stunning room and we've only enjoyed down two days stay in Cardiff. The view from the window was fantastic could see most of Cardiff we will obviously provided with the usual teas coffees hot chocolates and extra pillows. We had USB plug sockets next to the bed which I really did like and and there were also a standard plug socket is necessary of bed which again I really did like. The internet was quick functional and did exactly what it was supposed to do
We did have some problems but it wasn't really the hotels fault we were unable to use the, gym, jacuzzi or sauna or any of the spa facilities owing to the covid-19 crisis. The staff were in extremely short supply though with room service taking several hours to never come in at all.
We had problems with our telephones next to the bed in all the rooms not a big deal.
The hotel really is beautiful and I really think you should give this a chance if you would like to stay in Cardiff. We pay just £55 for our room and to be fair they are normally around 95 to £120 per night which I still think is better than the competition

Would have given 5 Stars, sorry only 4 stars allocated
Overall the hotel was clean and tidy, staff very friendly
Because to Storm ‘Dennis’ we decided to eat in the restaurant on all the evening due to terrible weather conditions.
The dining room / breakfast room and surrounding were excellent with lots of personal space
Food was good with an excellent choice, a little more expensive than the norm, but this is a hotel and would expect to pay a little extra, as well as the wine.
Evening dining staff and breakfast staff were very attentive – overall excellent
Bedroom was very clean and tidy with a super bed.
The down side:
When asked for Mayo with our evening meal we were presented with a plastic sachet which was very difficult to open (would have expected a small pot of Mayo). Also no olive oil / dressings
At breakfast only had choice of 2 continental meats - one was still frozen (again would of expected at least 4 at a minimum)
Only a choice of 2 cheeses – very poor
Yes, an English breakfast was available and was very good, my wife thoroughly enjoyed it
TV channel selector was hit and miss and had to scroll through all the channels manually with no programme guide on the TV. No listing on the welcoming pack, which I find very annoying as I tend to find and use the music channels as background ambiance.
Much to my dismay and very annoying, people tend to ‘dump’ glasses, bottles and used plates / cutlery on the floor in the corridor. I except this is no fault of the hotel, but a ‘sweep’ on a regular basis buy hotel staff should have rectify this – management please note
Pool was excellent. Steam room, not as hot as I would have expected and Sauna room not working

Stayed here for a 1 night spa revive break. The pool area very busy no beds to sit on, jacuzzi full every time we tried to go in, the sauna was out of action & only steam room available. The spa rooms & treatment were fab very relaxing & quiet. Couldn’t fault the treatments my daughter & I received. The bedroom was nice & clean disappointed there was no mattress protector on bed & the mattress was quite old & creaked every time I moved, bathroom was nice & big with a separate bath & shower. We had breakfast & dinner in the restaurant, breakfast was disappointing, it was buffet & the hot food was not hot & not much too choose from compared to the room service menu. Hot drinks were tea or black coffee if you wanted anything else you had to buy from the Starbucks counter @ extra cost. Dinner was very nice food was fresh & hot service was really good. Took my daughter for a spa break for her birthday & left feeling quite disappointed on the whole.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel and were very pleased with experience.
The staff were polite professional courteous always smiling and very helpful from our first encounter when we were trying to find out simple information before we booked. We spoke to Christina who even found us a better deal by booking direct with the hotel.
We had tried several hotel chains who either did not answer the phone or we were unable to even contact.
Our room was bright clean and more than acceptable, The bed was comfortable and because I do not think the hotel was full we were lucky not to have people slamming doors and talking in corridors in the early hours so we had an amazingly good nights sleep.
Restaurant was clean and well serviced. Food was very good both evening meal and breakfast.
Overall it was a lovely relaxing 2 nights.
However some minor things let it down.
The 3 very large plants next to the pool have obviously been dead for a while. They cant have just been overlooked. Just move them.
Although the food was good the breakfast was not particularly hot and the plates were cold so food became cold very quickly.
as did the coffee.
Parking we understand due to your location is at a premium so please do not block marked parking spaces with linen trollies.
Guests really do not want to be worrying about their cars being left in a public car park if there is no need.
Apart from that we will definitely stay there again. we had a relaxing enjoyable stay.
Well done and thank you to everyone who made that happen.

We stayed on Sunday 29th November for one night, Dinner with a bottle of wine & Full English breakfast. The Evening meal was lovely good quality and very tasty 3 couses we were stuffed, the staff were very helpful and did not rush us at all and the Restaurant was Covid friendly. The young lady on reception was very helpful and polite. The car park is small but we were able to park if it was busy you may have to us the NCP around the corner. There are sanatisers dotted all over and everybody was wearing masks in communal areas and in the lifts (Only 2 persons at a time) the whole thing worked well. The room was very big & clean and the bed was very large & comfy. You have to set the room temp for yourself very simple, ask for two room cards so you can leave one in the heating to keep it warm. The shops are a few minutes walk away so park up walk and enjoy the City. There was a family in the bar area who let there children run around the bar/ restaurant area, stand on the table and sofas no regard to anybody else which was a shame. Remember that dur to Covid a lot of accesories are removed throws cushions instructions.
