The hotel is definitely in need of an update . But it is clean and in a position that couldn't be bettered. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The lift was tiny and very old fashioned. you have to be careful on the stairs as they are very uneven. We had a sea view from our room. The beds were comfy. The free WiFi is great , you don't lose it and don't need to keep signing back in all the time. There are irons and ironing boards in the rooms. Also a hairdryer. The hotel is right in the middle of town but still quiet.
In general this hotel is OK but lacks atmosphere. The breakfast (which was an additional £9 pp) was standard self service but not hot. The waiter was attentive and pleasant. However Radio 1 playing rap music for generally over 60s was not very well thought out. People go to Oban and expect to hear Scottish music in the background. We ate at Bar Rio which is attached to the hotel on the 2nd night of our stay. I would not recommend it. Coming from the seafood capital you expect good haddock and chips. Instead it was obviously frozen and overcooked. My husband had spag bol which he left. Not once did a waitress ask if everything was OK. Even when she took away my husband's soup plate, she never asked did you enjoy that? In fact she never uttered a word! At one point we noticed 5 staff all standing chatting and not one looking after their stations/customers. We fave been to the Columba on numerous occasions and I would probably go back but some things are needing sorted out. I would definstely not return to the bar restaurant. The food was awful and the service poor.…
Hotel was nice and central. Check in staff polite and efficient. Room we were given was not what was represented in the pictures when booking and when I brought this to the managers attention he was very dismissive and uninterested. Other than that the room we were given was clean and comfortable. Just double check when booking that you have booked the room advertised.
