My wife treated me to dinner at Hotel du Vin in late November and the experience was first class from start to finish. Our food and wine pairing were excellent and so was the service. Following dinner, I enjoyed a lovely Cuban cigar in the heated outdoor lodge and also had a sampling of cask strength Scotch while my wife...

We stayed here for 3 days during Hogmanay 2014. The room was extremely lovely with a huge tub and shower. The bathroom was nice with heated floors with ample space. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The location was perfect in that it was close enough to the "tourist" areas, but far enough away to be peaceful. The room...

A delightful hotel with all the things one wants from a stay in Scotland, all heavy drapery, impeccable bedlinen, and an exquisite bath I did not particularly want to get out of! Breakfast was absolutely fabulous, and the restaurant aren't stingy with their portion sizes, either. The only thing I did not really like was the open-plan bathroom/bedroom arrangement (in...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
