It's rare for me to use a travel agent but in booking at the Waldorf I took advantage of rates and benefits using the Amex FHR program. The room rate and benefits were very good value. The hotel itself is a fine old building. The corridors are wide, the staircases sweeping and the suite that we were upgraded to it...

Excellent hotel 15 min walk to Old Town. Just got off the tram from airport and walked 5 mins to hotel. Beware the buffet breakfast of bacon and eggs was cold very disappointed with this there was a good selection however of cereals etc to compensate. Overall good.

Stayed here for one night with my partner to do some Christmas shopping in Edinburgh. The reception was nice and attentive staff, and the breakfast we had was beautiful, could not fault it or the staff waiting on us. There was a few faults with our room, the fridge did not work, the bed was very very squeaky and not...

Spent our usual 4 nights over ST Andrews Day for the 8th year running. Service standards across the hotel were the highest we have had here and a special mention to Rhona of the Reception team. It is always good to see the great care lavished on the old building by the Hilton Group. Just a pity that we have...

We spent 5 charming nights at The Caledonian in a tastefully decorated room with an amazing view of the castle. This medium-sized hotel has the most agreeable staff, with a perfect location and delicious food. We felt as though we had been dropped into Christmas past, a delightful experience that we will always remember.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
