My new wife and I stopped at The Howard for 7 nights and enjoyed the luxury and relaxation. The staff were extremely helpful, the food was delicious and the overall experience was a real treat. It was great to have the butler service as we enjoyed a few evening meals in our room. We appreciated the advice the staff gave...

Many thanks for such positive feedback on our lunch offering - but remember we serve Edinburgh' Finest Afternoon Tea as well, not forgetting Dinner in our two AA rosette restaurant, The Atholl Leon Kiteley General Manager

On two occasions we went with a group of friends for an annual lunch. The building is very elegant and the dining room was exactly as you would expect from such a well known establishment. The food and the service were excellent.

Stayed here for one night in February 2015. Stayed in a luxury double room that was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel was very quiet which is what we were looking for after a long day and night exploring the city. Staff were all very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. We were surprised at the level of service and quality of...

We stayed at The Howard for a long weekend early February. The staff were all so polite and helpful, especially upon arrival butler Jamie. The suite was beautiful and cosy. The hotel decor more than suits the age of the property, it is comfortable and charming and makes a nice change from modern characterless hotels. Particular thanks goes to the...

We stayed for 2 nights at The Howard over a weekend in early February 2015. We had a fantastic stay in the hotel in one of the suites. Old style house of traditional Old Town Edinburgh is exactly what we wanted. The Butler service was very useful although a tea / coffee making facility for the mornings would be good....

Visited the George for a one night stay whilst in Edinburgh on business in January 2015. Was recommended the hotel by a colleague as being close to the office we were visiting and having good service. The hotel is located in a few terraced Edinburgh houses and looks very traditional. Inside, the decoration is very in keeping with the style...

A very comprehensive review and my thanks to this guest for taking the time to share their experience. I am sorry to learn that this particular five star experience was not to their own personal taste but our Butler Service is quite extraordinary and I will make no apologies for that - I would simply urge all our discerning guests...

We stayed here for my birthday last year... On arrival at the '5 star' hotel, I expected to see a doorman...nope. We opened the big black wooden door (to the unassuming building) and entered. We assumed we'd see a smiley face...nope, we walked into a small room where we saw a lady behind the counter. She was very friendly and...

Many thanks for this review and rest assured we are most definitely 5 star. it is not a requirement for a 5 star hotel to have a doorman ( I think this is the only area where this guest believes we are lacking) and as a great part of The Howard's charm is its discretion, this is not a function...

As others also have writen, staff, breakfast and charm is 5 stars. Also had a wonderfull night of sleep. There is however street noose and you have to be a fan of the "dated" style to give it 5 stars. But very charming and good value. Worth a repeat.

Central in New Town Edinburgh this boutique hotel provides a service that far exceeds its exterior. Created out of a terrace of three houses the 18 rooms are beautifully fitted and the butler service is impeccable. Maybe not as impressive as most 5* establishments The Howard works hard to provide the personal service at sensible prices. It is well worth...

I am reading some of these reviews and I am wondering where some of these guests were staying! My husband and I stayed at this hotel in November of 2014 for four nights. I am grateful for the kind words regarding our staff, service and food but am disappointed to read that this guest felt our building was not five star. Especially as we are in the middle of a programme of refurbishing our bedrooms and have totally renovated our bar and lounge area. Leon Kiteley General Manager

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
