We stayed at the Witchery in January which was a birthday present from my partner and it was unbelievable, despite being slightly anxious due to seeing previous mixed reviews. We were in the library suite which was across the road from the restaurant. It was out of this world. The room itself was magnificent, the complimentary champagne beautiful and the...

Some may say Witchery is overpriced but they offer 3 course set menu to choose from £38 which is an excellent deal, but we ordered a la carte on the night of our visit. We ordered both aged scotch fillet & venison, steak were cooked to perfection without a fault and in generous proportion but it nothing really stands out...

Arrived and immediately thought this is stunning! Slightly let down by the attentiveness of the staff and thought it was extremely pricey but was open to try something new. Slightly chilly and was thankful for the thick Table cloth to stop the draft down the dramatic stone stair case. Food was average and tasty however some of the dishes fell...

Wow. This was my third visit and it didn't disappoint. The environment is wonderful, service great and the food so perfectly cooked and served. I love this restaurant - it's very posh, obviously a high end restaurant and they do everything right. Perfect setting, excellent service, delicious food, and it really does feel like a perfect treat. At the same...

The Library suite at The Witchery was gothic luxury. Lots of quirky details and a very comfortable bed. Nice touches included Champagne on arrival and the deepest bath ever. Full Scottish breakfast was fantastic and set us up for the day. Staff were brilliant with nothing too much trouble. Cant wait to stay again.

We ate at the Secret Garden in The Witchery by the Castle for our anniversary meal, and the experience was very special. The restaurant has a romantic atmosphere with candle light and an enchanting decor and the staff provided a 5* service with no snobbery attached. We were handed a wine list that resembled an encyclopaedia, with every wine imaginable...

Probably once this was worth the sizzle, but not now. Great room, gloomy service, dull food. It shows that the price of a decent reputation is constant vigilance - which they appear to have lost. Ho hum

This is the second time we have stayed at the Witchery and we have to say it is getting better with every stay. We stayed in the Inner Sanctum, Lady Debra actually cried because she couldn't believe what we had booked, it is gothic splender at its best, 3 rooms of beauty and drama, there are faults but you would...

There seems to be some confusion by reviewers (or where tripadviser are saving) postings of reviews for the hotel / rooms and the restaurant. The Witchery restaurant does not suit my tastes or style, but when I stay in The Witchery I go to the sister restaurant at The Tower. The rooms are expensive, but are very boutique and decadent...

Set in a beautiful old building by the Castle, we went to the secret garden.. This part of the building is decked out with gothic candles and similar decor. The food was great.. I had the ribeye steak (cooked to perfection) and my other half had the smoked trout... This came highly recommended from friends and it certainly lived up...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
