Very clean, good location. Also a great view from the top floor. The hostel is really big so the common rooms tend to be a little crowded. My only real complaint is that right after I checked in, I wanted to shower right away, and the bathrooms on my floor weren't working. I would have liked to know that when...

Best location for a hostel imaginable! Our room had an amazing view of the castle. Staff is extremely laidback and friendly. Checkin was very fast. Room was small, but with such nice common areas, you will never be in your room. Rooms, bathrooms, common areas, everything was very clean. Wonderful laidback atmosphere in all common areas. Wifi is fast and...

It was nice that the rooms had themes on the doors but the themes didn't continue inside much which was a shame. The rooms were small but ok, the main issue we had was that people could see into our window directly opposite, so we had to close the blind the whole time making it a little dull in the...

I had the pleasure to be there this week and I was very impressed. The room and the bathroom were so clean, the staff was lovely, and the location is terrific! Just in the middle of the city, very close to every important monument you have to see. 5/5 for you!

Large hostel with high quality common areas. Fantastic, central location in Edinburgh. Lots of restaurants around the corner, and very easy to walk to from the train station. Rooms and showers were nice and clean. Highly recommended.

The Castel Rock Hostel has a very friendly atmosphere which matches very well with the city of Edinburg. The rooms are good and clean, each bed has its own lamp and charger switch. Good common area, totaly walking distance for the castle, royal mile and waverly rail station (I had a medium/big wheeled luggage and was totaly able to walk...

Traveled to Edinburgh with my sister and brother-in-law - thankfully, we managed to get a 3 bed all to ourselves. The room was small - but just nice - had the most beautiful view from our window. Reception was absolutely fantastic. We did not have a toilet in our room - which meant we had to use the common toilets....

I stayed in a 12 bed female dorm for three nights while travelling in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I am totally satisfied for all the facilities and services provided in the hostel. The communal area (the toilet, kitchen and living room) are clean and tidy in most of the time. Besides that, the hostel staff are very friendly and very helpful...

A really good hostel! It is close to all the things you want to see in Edinburgh. Right on the Royal Mile and next to the Castle obviously. Is only a short walk to bus stations and trains as well. Staff are friendly, overall really good atmosphere in the hostel. The big common room is really nice, and facilities are...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
