It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital.

Stayed at this hotel years ago and only booked this time due to booking mix up by Booking.com. Hotel prices were exorbitant as Bruce Springsteen was in town (he was FAB!). £529 for one night in a suite but, the suite (Room 322) was tired, creaky and dated although the bed was incredibly comfortable. You’d get a nicer bathroom in a Premier Inn. There is parking behind the hotel which is a definite plus. Breakfast was included but if we had paid £18 each for the eggs benedict my partner and I had, I’d have asked for a refund. Hard eggs with a drizzle of hollandaise was not as described on the menu. Luckily we used croissants for the bacon to make up our breakfast. Check in was a delight (despite reception area being dark and dull). The person who checked us in was cheerful and very helpful. Checkout and breakfast not so encouraging. No one asked how our stay was. No one asked how our breakfast was. I had emailed the hotel prior to our stay to let them know Booking.com had let us down and we were staying not just for the Boss. I had just retired from the NHS and my partner is almost 60 so this was to be a special celebration. No acknowledgment to email or at hotel. Bit disappointing. Overall, an underwhelming experience on what was to be a celebratory occasion.

I think Malmaison Leith is living in the past. Either that or having a bit of a laugh at customers expense. Anyhow, here’s my experience for a couples weekend stay at Malmaison Leith. Room, dark and scruffy. Bed was lumpy and oddly small for the size of the room. Bathroom was small and had an extractor fan that ran constantly and noisily. Gloomy color scheme - which would have been on point in 2001 but by 2023 looks like a sad trip down memory lane. Reception area was not cleaned. Room service trays sitting the corridor for hours and hours. Public toilets by the bar were just a disgrace. OK. You got the picture. A lovely Buidling in a lovely spot charging prices reflective of a good hotel in a good location but delivering a service quality of a two star student dorm. Won’t spend my money here next time.

There are plenty of good things about this hotel. The location on the waterfront is lovely and the staff were all helpful. However, having stayed in two excellent newly refurbished pubs on our journey north, Malmaison felt tired and a bit shabby. Our room was too hot and with no air con and a window that could not be opened it felt airless, hot and stuffy. The heated towel rail could not be turned off either which added to the heat. Luckily there was a fan in the room and we needed it. The typical dark decor of Malmaison made our room quite grim. At over £560 for two nights, accommodation only, we felt short changed.

Decent hotel but nothing special. The plumbing in our room was very noisy such that one next door flush the toilet. It made the most terrible noise in our room which kept us up during the night. We asked for another room which was given to us without fuss so that was good and it was an upgrade Very good the parking is free as I’m sure you don’t get that in the city centre Hotels please note it is about half an hour from the centre of town by cab. The breakfast out was okay, but the waiter kept bringing over the food for another table. And at dinner, the drinks took ages to come from the bar and the service wasn’t great, even though it was only about 20% full. Overall I’d say it was okay for the money given the cost of hotels is so expensive nowadays everywhere you go. You certainly don’t get much for over £200 a night.

Good stay. Friendly check in, room to standard, all the amenities as advertised. Nothing exceptional, but we didn't need it! Would always stay here when coming to Edinburgh. We were stopping off on our way north and had been to Falkirk (the Kelpies and the Boatlift). Great day and night!

Positives - barman was friendly and attentive and breakfasts were lovely. Negatives - unfriendly and cold receptionist and reception area is dull and dark. Mal’s new interior design for rooms are cheap and lack character. Bathroom in our suite was like a budget hotel bathroom. There’s no air con in hotel yet they insist on using duvets that would suffice in the Arctic. There was only one bathrobe in our suite. Both days we had to wait 20 mins for the waitress to take our breakfast order even although it wasn’t busy. When checking out we weren’t asked if everything was ok with our stay by a disinterested receptionist. Very disappointed in the overall experience. Considering it cost £710 for two night the hotel certainly does not deliver to that price point. Certainly won’t be staying at a Malmaison again.

First visit to a Malmaison hotel, a group well-recommended by family members. Slightly difficult to find by car after a long journey into Scotland. But friendly and efficient reception and an amazing and unexpected upgrade to a suite overlooking the new Waterfront at Leith was a real treat. A staff member even came up to help us turn on the Nespresso machine! Dinner with my god-daughter and her husband in the Restaurant was very enjoyable, with no rush. A quiet and very comfortable night. Wish we had planned to stay for longer.

Difficult to find, even with GPS, as no name over front or side and not even a sign at entrance to car park. Can't drive up to entrance and no side entrance - about 25m is the closest. No luggage trolley (their only one had broken) and we had loads of small poieces as on a long trip. Staff did help to unload though, but staggeringly slow when we left. Had to enetr by the launary entrance! Room quite small and terrible lighting and tiny bathroom with awful lighting. Heating hardly worked and extra heater they gave us on request was tiny. Bar and restaurant looking unwelcolming, esp the bar. Great position for the HMS Britannia and some amazing cafes and restaurants, but would not go back. Expensive and pretty poor

So far I’m not impressed. They couldn’t tell us where to even park because the guy at the desk said his English wasn’t good. Are we not in a country that speaks English? Last time I checked we were. An American couple who happened to be standing there told us they just went through this as well and they were kind enough to help us out. Also, we gave them laundry to clean before the 9 a.m. deadline and it was not done! We’ve been gone 7 days and really needed that to be completed. They can’t even tell us if laundry is done on Sunday. They claim they don’t know. What do you know here? It’s extremely frustrating not being able to get accurate information if any at all! I definitely would not book here unless you can be totally self sufficient. Food isn’t great either by the way.

We have just had our wedding at the hotel and the team did a fantastic job. We live nearby and really wanted to keep things local and our modest wedding size was perfect for the venue, which is in such an interesting and quirky location and building. The wedding was originally booked for April 2021 but because of the pandemic and the fact we really wanted a proper evening ‘do’ we postponed it once, and then again, to be reassured that all our guests would be able to travel here. Melanie was our Coordinator and together with her colleague Lauren and the whole team, they delivered an event well worth waiting for and really went above and beyond. The multi-purpose rooms scrub up really well once all the decor is in place, the food was top notch (from the Brasserie menu) and from when I arrived the day before (Friday) to when the last of our guests left on Sunday, we were made to feel special. We loved our suite which had a view across to the Water of Leith, and like all hotels in the brand, it was well designed, well-appointed and with just enough little luxury touches, without going overboard. I really appreciated that the room was made so welcoming for my arrival, including a surprise bottle of champagne, which was perfect to enjoy when my Mum arrived from England shortly after me. Liaison with our local suppliers and our photographers and communication with ourselves was always great. On behalf of myself and my husband (!) thanks so much for an excellent job. Highly recommended for any event and now that the tram is about to run to it’s new stop about two minutes away, I hope this hotel continues to go from strength to strength. Leith has had a difficult time due to the disruption of the tram works, but The Shore is such a great place to visit. S&D, Granton, Edinburgh
