Arrived & was met by one of their great Concierge, he was pleseant & helped us with our parking needs. We later found out his name was Frank(well worth a mention due to how helpful &...

First time visit. Very central to the middle of Edinburgh hence a great location for tourists. About half an hour in a cab from the airport. Reception young lad y very helpful and pleasant. Room itself spacious and relatively comfortable. Bed not particularly comfortable and mattress not very supportive on the edges.

We travelled up from the Midlands and wasn't disappointed! We arrived before the check in time but the staff were so helpful, they checked the room to see if it was available... it was. We booked the van in at the carpark (slightly expensive but staff allowed us to leave it there on our last day meaning we saved compared...

We have just returned from a weekend break in Edinburgh staying at the McDonald Holyrood Hotel, staying in an Executive Double Room. The stay was top class from check in through to departure. All the staff were amazing with special mention to Ruth at Reception, Ellis in the bar who makes the best cocktails and to the Concierge team. The...

Had a lovely weekend in Edinburgh. The hotel was clean and the room was lovely. Ignore the calls of 'areas are tired' and some areas are 'cold'. Not our experience. A heater was provided in the room which heated it up,nicely. The concierge was fab. Yes the car parking was £20 a night. The dingy NCP up the road was...

We stayed for two nights with breakfast. Generally good but with some very minor issues that could be improved for this price. Room was a bit dark, particularly over desk, no moisturiser in changing rooms. Good breakfast freshly prepared (disappointed no haggis). Good checkout 12 noon. Staff very helpful.

Macdonald Holyroood Hotel is a nice and convenient hotel. Our corner triple room was spacious and included good toiletries and a mirror that did not fog up! Our concierge, Jacob, was most helpful and offered to print out our boarding passes the evening before we were leaving. We asked him about a restaurant we were thinking of going to and...

The hotel is reasonably central and offers easy access to most parts of Edinburgh you may wish to see. We have stayed in macdonald hotels many times in the lake district, which was why we picked this one, we knew it was more expensive than most others in the area, but were quite content to pay the extra because of...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
