Good value hotel. Set in central location with views of castle. Well appointed compact room with full bathtub and separate shower. Loved fluffy towels. Did upgrade for nominal fee to have robes, espresso and fridge.

Rooms were good, location excellent. Breakfast experience was dire. Surly staff manning the restaurant reception akin to a bad tempered bouncer. Requested a bacon roll for breakfast and was served a roll with two miniscule rashers of burnt streaky bacon and a rasher of raw pork fat. Complained and no one interested. Emailed and got no response. Have now started...

We've stayed in both Apex hotels in the Grassmarket, and both are equally terrific. This was our fourth stay in them. The view of the Castle is fabulous, make sure you ask for (and perhaps pay) for it, it is completely worth it to gaze upon the Castle each morning and every night.

Very good hotel, very clean and also in very good position for the centre of Edinburgh. Staff were very helpful as we arrived late and the car park was full so organised for us to park in next Apex hotel a few hundred yards down the road.

I stayed here for a week while on vacation. As a single woman traveling alone, I always felt safe and secure. The hotel had all the amenities Americans prefer (especially the en suite bathroom). The wifi was free and I always had a great connection. The staff were professional, courteous, and prompt. The bed was very comfortable and I slept...

Situated in a great place to get to attractions. Castle, Camera Obscura, National Museum, Grey Friars Bobby. Room wasn't quite ready when we arrived at 3.30pm. Spare bed was quickly made up (although could've done with a bigger duvet). Didn't realise the swimming pool was in the sister hotel 20m down the hill. Kids were a little disappointed in this....

I expected Edinburgh to be a very walkable city and I was right - I easily found this hotel on foot from Waverley station. It was quite central to everything I wanted to see in the city and there are also some good pubs right close by. The room was very clean, the staff was hospitable and it was nice...

Great location, lovely food but a very expensive hotel to eat and drink in. Our room was just an attic room which was very small for the money we paid and what was advertised on their website but great service.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
