Travelled by train to Waverley Station. The Scotsman was a 3 minute walk leaving from the Market St exit. Check in has two desks, was friendly and quick. Our cases were taken to the room on the 6th floor over looking the old town and we were given a small map of the city. Our room was spacious with no...

Excellent location, but would not stay here again. This was a nice hotel but not the wow factor. The worst part for me was the staff. Poor knowledge of the area, the concierge should be able to recommend a destination or at least attempt to help with your query. But I was met with the disappointment of ask someone in...

I visited here on Feb 14th and I had asked for a room with a nice view, and they delivered :) The room was spacious, had surround sound, even sound in the bathroom at the flick of a switch, perfect for shower time and a sing song lol There was a separate antique style bath, overlooking North Bridge, large TV,...

A fantastic hotel. Made to feel welcome and allv the staff we have been in contact with have been extremely helpful. The build is very old but it had a modern twist in some parts. The room was huge and clean with all mod cons. Views of Edinburgh are fantastic. There is a spa which is free to use as...

We had a lovely room with a view over Waverley bridge to the New town. Very comfortable and well appointed but roasting hot. Radiator valve didn't work, nor did the air con, therefore had to have windows open in Feb. Very noisy but whisky seemed to have solved the problem of sleeping. Otherwise, staff are wonderful and breakfast is pretty...

The location is perfect, clean and the staff friendly and accommodating, but overall the hotel misses the finesse and added extras that you'd expect for a 5 star. Having stayed in other 5 stars in Edinburgh, the Scotsman just wasn't of the same standard. The room was dark, quite basic- no welcome info/brochure in the room, tv had limited channels...

The rooms were lovely, and individual members of the staff were outstanding- friendly and professional, which made the misses in this hotel all the sadder. The breakfast was outstanding, but when I attempted to order a snack at the bar for dinner (about 9pm) - they were unable to do that. They could provide something from the Room Service menu...

Big, very comfy, clean and quiet room; nice beds, excellent location just across from Waverley Station and around the corner from Old Town Edinburgh. Highly recommend...nice staff, too. Housekeeping comes early so don't forget the do not disturb light.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Scotsman Hotel, resides within the former Scotsman Newspaper building. Originally built in 1905, this majestic building was designed to dominate the Edinburgh skyline and features incredible views of the city´s most famous landmarks. In 2001 the building was transformed into The Scotsman Hotel with careful attention towards preserving the magnificent Italian marble staircase, stunning oak panelling, imposing marble pillars and ornate ceilings.Originally the reception room of the newspaper, our North Bridge Bar and Brasserie features the original oak panelling, a hand carved wooden balcony and imposing marble pillars. The seating area is split into two levels with the balcony offering quieter, intimate seating, with a birds-eye-view below to the buzzing main restaurant and cocktail bar.The newspaper held its giant printing presses in the lower ground floor. The press room now houses our Scotsman Health Club and Spa with a vast state of the art gym. Popular with locals and hotel guests alike. Facilities include a steel swimming pool, steam and sauna, tropicarium, 60-station gym, spa treatment rooms and a relaxation suite. With no two alike, our 69 rooms and suites each have their own quirky features including curved corner window bays with breathtaking views and marble bathrooms and as a guest at The luxury 5 star Scotsman you will enjoy free Wi-Fi access and a complimentary Scotsman Newspaper. ... more   less
