We were really looking forward to our stay and in terms of the room and the friendliness of the staff, I would give this hotel a high rating. However, I would second the review just before mine. We stayed on the same weekend and the noise from the other rooms and outside was a real problem. The wall to the...

I always liked the George Hotel and I like the rebranded Principal, although I think the George Hotel is a much better name ...it is a Georgian building on George Street in the Georgian New Town. The location is excellent - just perfect for shopping and sightseeing - and our room was quiet, tasteful and luxurious. The staff are lovely....

This hotel has just reopened after a massive refurbishment. It is a stunning and really beautiful place. We had a superior twin room which was lovely, it had everything we could need and was really well appointed. Brilliant new bar (The Printing Press) so stylish and reminded me a little of a John Wayne western movie. The barman mixed a...

Great service. Comfortable clean rooms, well serviced. Noisy in some rooms at weekend due to hotel functions - ask for a room on higher floors - and noise between rooms annoying if neighbour watching TV either late or early. Fantastic location close to most Edinburgh attractions/shopping. Breakfast at £15 (£12 if booked in advance) simply not worth it - not...

Booked for one night prior to going to Glasgow. Glamourous looking Hotel in central location. Recived upgrade to superior room on the 7th floor with fantastic views over Edingburgh as well as the castle so cannot ask for any better than that. The room was beautiful and spotless. Didn't eat there on the evening but the breakfast the following morning...

Hotel is located in a great part of town - walkable to both the new and the old city. Option to select two twin beds which is great when you're traveling with a friend and like having your own bed. TV's are able to do some mirroring with android phones (unfortunate as we both only had iphones). Overall - clean...

Excellent stay, no complaints at all with the room, & breakfast was great with plenty of choice, everyone made you feel very welcome. Room was clean and comfortable in a great location, parked car on Waverley station which is ten minute walk, but you expect that in any City Centre, will definitely use again.

From the moment the Concierge greets you, you know this will be a great place. Reception very professional and friendly. Room, 751, excellent. All staff we met throughout the hotel seemed to be very proud to work here and it shows. Faultless service, beautiful room and ideal location. Already thinking of our next visit here. Only had the opportunity to...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
