Reviewed yesterday NEW

A recently refurbished (and renamed) central Edinburgh hotel made up of a series of connecting Georgian buildings in the New Town. It's very tastefully done and has successfully given a modern look to the old buildings, without losing any of the character. The reception and entrance area is buzzy, and check-in was fast, efficient and informative. My Signature Suite was...

The location was perfect! The room was elegantly decorated and I've never had a more comfortable bed in any hotel. But the absolute best part of this hotel was the staff! They were so helpful, polite, and friendly, I hated to leave them. I couldn't have stayed in a nicer, more accommodating place, I hope to get back there again,...

Really enjoyed our stay at the Principal. Charming hotel. Location is walking distance to most everything. Upon arrival we were given a complementary upgrade to a suite during our stay :) This is a beautiful hotel with a wonderful staff!!! Our time here was perfect!!!

Excellent stay, good location, great room, friendly and helpful staff. Parking is limited outside and expensive for street parking so is not ideal if you need your car hand. There is a car park a few blocks away.

Avoid this hotel. Although the staff is polite and tries to help, many of the rooms are unappealing. I've had a good experience in previous stays at this hotel, and therefore recommended it to family for our current visit. Making a long story short, my wife and I were assigned to a room off an unappealing hall with a view...

Dear Rlb141 thank you for sharing your comments on TripAdvisor following your recent stay with us. I was disappointed to learn that your experience with us on this occasion was not as you had hoped. One night only but we were made to feel very welcome by every member of staff we encountered. The room, although of a medium size was tastefully decorated with a great tv Dinner in the Press Room was first class and breakfast was excellent. The porter was most helpful in calling a cab and helped carry our luggage. Would certainly...

First time in Edinburgh and we luckily chose to stay at this charming hotel in the centre of the New Town. Upon arrival, the hotel staff greeted us warmly and the beautiful lobby made quite an impression. The room was fabulous and the tuck box a big hit. Filled with snacks and a bottle of milk in the fridge for...

Stayed for 3 nights in April '17 and and paid around $275USD a night thinking I got a bargain considering I booked months in advance for a "5 star hotel," and via third party well-know travel site. Boy was I in for a surprise! Not only did I have to go through a maze and a few steps up here...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
