This hotel has been recently renovated and is both charming and modern at the same time. It is in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town and at this time of the year, it decorated with twinkly lights and wreaths. I booked a Superior King room and was not disappointed. The room was of average size but had a large bathroom....

The Principal has an excellent location within easy walking distance from Waverley Station and all the attractions that Edinburgh has to offer. The hotel itself is of the highest class with recently refurbished rooms and staff who can't do enough for you. Definitely the place to stay in Edinburgh.

Went as a group to stay for the weekend and took in the Christmas evening dinner and disco. The hotel is much larger than it first appears. Nicely decorated and the room and bathroom was very nice. Very comfortable bed. There was tea and coffee making facilitiesand a rather nice touch of a plate of cakes. The food at the...

My husband and I stayed here for our 40th wedding anniversary, although expensive it was a special occasion and we were not disappointed. Our Deluxe Double room was beautifully decorated, fresh and clean. The king size bed was luxurious with feather pillows. Lovely soft fluffy towels, slippers and dressing gowns. Luxury toiletries, tuck box, water, milk tea and coffee, just...

This is the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in, the staff are friendly and plentiful, the bed comfy and the room stylish. The hotel is handsome and in a great spot in the middle of the new town, close to lots of nice restaurants and shops. It's the little touches that make it though; sweets and crisps with the tea...

We stayed here for our company Christmas break and couldn't have picked a more charming place to stay. Edinburgh is wonderful, especially at Christmas and even more so when the sun comes out, and the Principal Edinburgh (formerly the George Hotel) is the icing on the cake. It appears to have been recently taken over by the Principal Group, and...

Lovely and warm rooms however it is my first experience for a hotel which doesn't stock foam pillows. They said they only have feather down which doesn't really cater for me. Also there was no shower cap and cotton pads provided in the bathroom.

This was our first stay at this hotel and it was really good. We were staying to celebrate our anniversary. When we checked in we had been given a free room upgrade, and two complimentary drinks vouchers. In the room we had a little slice of cake and a lovely little note celebrating our anniversary. It was lovely. The room...

This is a fantastic hotel, rooms beautifully decorated , warm and cosy and spotlessly clean. Food in the restaurant is excellent but make sure you book as it is very popular. The other thing that makes this hotel stand out are the excellent staff, from the minute you arrive you are looked after, every department is so on the ball...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
