In general was ok. The staff was kind and nice. The room big enough for us with a travel cot in it. The heating was or too hot or too cold and the beds weren't warm enough we had to ask for mor bedding because...More
Booked partly due to its proximity to a conference venue and partly due to the price, I couldn't fault this budget beater. Not everyone would manage the 3 flights of winding stairs, but I need all the exercise I can get. Although I was travelling...More
With the fringe being on, choice was limited. We had to settle for a tiny room up in the roof, sharing toilet and shower with 2 other rooms. Not perfect but only needed to stay one night.
We got back 10 minutes after curfew and...More
I was slightly concerned by the reviews here but was met by a friendly welcome on arrival and the place makes a pleasant change from your average dull Travelodge. If you get the rather slow tram from the airport all the way to the end...More

Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The
top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
