I regularly use HIE, as I find them good value, but unfortunately this time I found the exception. I checked in half an hour early, and was told the room reserved for me wasn't ready for me, but was given another room of the same type, but the receptionist informed me it was on the top floor. This didn't bother...

Good location - just take the tram from the airport to the last stop go to the left pavement and the hotel is just beyond the statue of Conan Doyle. Our room was fine but smelt a bit musty when we arrived, perhaps as the extractor fan wasn't working. Terrible creaking floorboards in the corridor outside the room which serve...

Hotel is in a very good location but that's where advantages finished in my case. Breakfast is of poor quality, water under shower was not hot enough (it was hardly warm to be precise) + other issues I came across. I was staying only 2 nights so I didn't report anything but my impression really wasn't good. If you're not...

Stayed here in March for a city break. Literally a one minute walk from the tram. The staff were extremely friendly. The hotel is in a great location for exploring the city. The breakfast is absolutely brilliant. The rooms are slightly dated but have absolutely everything you need so can't fault them. Clean and tidy. Would highly recommend.

First and last time at this hotel. Yes the location for the city centre is ideal, however, the staff were miserable, no smiles, no greetings. We always request a quiet room but the first room offered was next to the elevator! it also had broken furniture and the TV was not working. There are lifts to all floors but then...

This is the perfect location for me. It is at the end of the Tram line, and a 5 minute walk to Edinburgh Waverley. Also, lots of restaurants and pubs in the vacinity. I have stayed here a couple of times recently, and I would stay again.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
