Booked in for a Sunday night stay , great central location, short walk to the Edinburgh Play house & Princess Street. Over 40 stairs to climb to reach reception, very fast check in with payment requested at check in. Room comfortable & breakfast was very good. We were able to leave our suitcases for later collection, which was very helpful....

Pros: Great location right by bus, train and tram station making getting anywhere easy. It was easy to walk to all the sights in a short amount of time. Room was large. Full Scottish breakfast was great. Negatives: 3-4 flights of stairs to rooms. Furniture and decor is really outdated and old. Bathroom was tiny and shower door barely opened...

After reading raving reviews I decided on Elder York for our Edinburgh accommodation. What a disaster! Dont stay here. It is extremely noisy and the rooms are below average. Meter Parking is about a 5 min walk away. Wifi and breakfast is good. How I wish I chose a different stay in this beautiful city.

I would definitely stay here again. Staff were helpful. Easy check in and easy to find. Very central, 5min walk to train station. Rooms were clean and big with bathrooms. Noisy in morning with it being on main road. Very tasty breakfast. Only negative is all the stairs to get up to room.

I stayed here for a night as I am making my intermediate stop going from north west England to further North of Scotland. It is right next to the bus station, so I will definitely recommend this if you have an early inter-town bus to catch the next morning. The staffs are friendly, though the sound-proofing of the room ain't...

Very friendly and helpful staff helped with luggage as I was recovering from a broken leg and found the stairs a little awkward. As I live in the " middle of nowhere" in rural Sussex I found it a bit of a novelty to watch people and busses from the window. The bathroom door needed some attention as it didn't close. Breakfast...

Such a lucky find! Most places were all booked up, so we went for this one and were so happy! from the comfort to the friendly staff to breakfasts to location -- man, this place is a gem. Be prepared for stairs, as the rooms are above street level and there are no elevators. Not a problem for us, but...

I discovered Elder York a few years ago after being let down by another place. This actually did me a good turn as this Guest house is far better than where I stayed before. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and the rooms are comfortable and clean. I have a double to myself because I like an ensuite. Breakfasts are...

Busy weekend in Edinburgh, struggled to find a hotel. Moreover found the Elder York Guest House. Probably not a business option, but I really enjoyed it. Great location, excellent breakfasts and personable hosts.

Staff at guest house was very friendly and helpful. Amazing location. We came for a weekend away with friends and wanted to see as much as possible in few days we had, so Elder York Guest House was perfect for us because all main touristy places are within the walking distance. It is also fairly close to the train station...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
