The owners of this b&b were very inviting and hospitable from the first moment we arrived. They greeted us from outside the door. Although we arrived early and our room wasn't available, they held onto our luggage and gave us keys until it was ready. When we returned, our bags were in the room (we didn't have to carry them...

14 Hart Street was a wonderful location for our weekend break. So close to the city centre and a warm and welcoming atmosphere which made it hard to leave. Gorgeous breakfast and super comfortable room! Hosts Angela and James were very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend it! Grace

My wife and I visited Edinburgh for the first time this September and wanted somewhere to stay which was not only a nice place to stay but was value for money. Thankfully we found Hart Street which exceeded expectations. We were made to feel very welcome, like a home from home, nothing was too much trouble. The property was stunning,...

We stayed here for 2 nights this September and had a lovely stay. The couple who run it are very friendly, polite and welcoming. The room was quite large with a vey nice bathroom and shower (though the best shower setting couldn't be used as it flooded the bathroom). The breakfasts were really good too. I have no real gripes...

Would definitely recommend this B&B as it has a great location in a quiet street yet within a short walk to Princes St and the Edinburgh Playhouse being only five minutes away. The hosts are very welcoming and helpful, our room was furnished to a high standard with thoughtful additions such as guide books, fresh milk, shortbread, a decanter of...

14 Hart Street is a lovely B&B in the heart of Edinburgh - within walking distance of pretty much everything. The house is a large old town house decorated with numerous items that must have been collected over a great many years. A really welcoming place. Your hosts could not be more amenable, serving a hearty and delicious breakfast, and...

This excellent B & B is conveniently situated near the centre of the city, but in a quiet road. James & Angela are very good hosts, & were most helpful in every way, including looking after some my luggage while I went away for a few days. I had a different room on each of my two visits, & they...

A friend and I stayed two nights and we had a great stay. Our train arrived quite late and it was 11:30 or 12:00 when we arrived at the B&B. James and Angela were very accomodating. James met us at the door, gave us a brief tour, and made sure we were comfortable - even though I'm sure he was...

14 Hart Street is a lovely bed and breakfast located within walking distance to Princes Street, the Royal Mile, the Royal Botanical Gardens as well as many pubs and restaurants. The room we had was a good size, very clean and comfortable, with complementary tea, coffee, wine and whisky in the room. Both a cold and hot breakfast was available...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
