really enjoyed being back at Hart Street. I have been twice before both times on business but as I was going to the festival it was all pleasure this time! James and Angela always make you so welcome and I feel so relaxed in the rooms. The furnishings are first class and bedding and towels of a really good quality....

We stayed with James and Angela for the first weekend of the Fringe Festival. They were both extremely welcoming and hospitable. James's breakfasts are just amazing with the delicious Potato Scones! Their house is beautiful and our room was gorgeous and spacious. We would definitely recommend anyone visit Edinburgh to stay with them. The town centre is 10-15mins walk to...

We really enjoyed our stay in this B&B. The hosts Angela and James were amiable and always there to make sure that everything is OK. The location in the new town is nice with many cafes and restaurants (also some recommended by the hosts) nearby, though in a quiet street. We were offered many choices for breakfast which was very...

14 Hart Street is an excellent B & B. You feel very welcome and like nothing is too much trouble. The room was lovely with everything you needed and more ie chocolates and wine! The shower was powerful and the room emaculate. Breakfast was to die for and the fresh strawberries and blueberries a touch I haven't experienced elsewhere. The...

We stayed end of June 2011 for 3 nights at 14 Hart St. This was our 2nd stay in this beautiful B&B and we will come back again - for sure! By now, we have a lot of experience with several B&B´s all over the country and we can absolutely recommend 14 Hart St. for a perfect trip to Edinburgh....

We stayed here while visiting the fringe for our annual pilgrimage. First time staying at a B&B and I was most impressed. The owners, James and Angela are charming. They couldn't do more to help us feel at home. Nice little touches like free wine and whisky in the rooms, free wifi, chocolates, and putting in some Earl Grey teabags...

My husband, two children and I had a lovely stay at 14 Hart Street at the end of June. The location was perfect for walking around Edinburgh, yet so quiet that you could relax and sleep peacefully at the end of the day. James and Angela were quite warm and inviting, and provided helpful dining recommendations. Breakfast was delicious, and...

We stayed in 14 Hart Street during a very busy festival period in Edinburgh and it was a little haven. The hosts, Angela and James, were so welcoming to us even at 7:30am in the morning.... having just crawled of the sleeper train! Our room was wonderful and so peaceful too, you had everything you needed including a very comfortable...

We stayed in the basement room nearest to the street during our honeymoon trip in Jul 2011. The room (including bathroom) was clean and very homely. The breakfast was scrumptious and James and Angela were excellent hosts. The location of the guesthouse was the real winner! Exteriorly, there was no indication that the house was a guesthouse as there was no...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
