My partner and I stayed here for five nights during the Fringe Festival and had a great time. The superior suite was a good sized room with a kitchen area and the room was kept nicely clean through our stay. Special mention must got to Franco who was gave us a warm and friendly welcome and recommended Jolly restaurant round...

If you want accommodation that doesn't rip you off during the Festival, then this is it! For a very reasonable price you get an apartment style room with microwave, fridge, kettle, tea coffee - LUXURY biscuits (much appreciated when coming back from late bars!), muffins, orange juice, mineral water, daily change of towels, very comfortable bed and a real secret...

We couldn't fault the place. Great location and clean comfortable accommodation. Free breakfast (muffin, juice, water, milk, coffee) and internet are plus. Friendly staff. We would recommend it and stay here again.

Me and my friend stayed here for our holiday. You can't fault it, nice rooms, everything you really need is provided. It's above a sauna but that doesn't fault it one bit, especially as there is a separate door. Next time I'm in Edinburgh, I will be staying here.

I'd stayed in the Alva hotel before and was really grateful when they told me they had a flat free during the festival at their partner establishment, Village Apartments. The price - £65 per night - was a bargain, and although the setting next to the very functional looking sauna may seem a bit light industrial (!), the actual flat...

The kitchen in the room had a nice selection of complementary snacks and hot drinks and was equipped with microwave and crockery so you could easily heat yourself and decent meal up if you...

I stayed at The Steamworks a couple of years ago (2010) (The other date here does not let me put 2010 so Ive marked 2011) I was attending a friends wedding in Edinburgh. The room was nice n warm very clean, with a very hospitable welcome found on the door when I arrived. I loved the atmosphere of the place...

I originally booked to stay for two nights, but so enjoyed the city and the accommodation that I opted to stay for an additional night. When I arrived, the standard room that I had booked was not available, so I was upgraded to an apartment at no extra charge. The rooms seem to have undergone some light renovation since the...

Located in a very quiet and pleasant residential area, yet a stones throw from the centre of Edinburgh this was a great base for a long weekend stay. Yes it's above a sauna but the whole place is so tucked away down a quiet residential street it doesn't feel like it and chances are there'll be no-one around to see...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
