Outdated! Poor staffing, unable to do their jobs. Manager unapproachable, not fit for the job. Totally not what is on the brochure, no rooms were as the photo selling this hotel, limited parking. Food poor, I sent mine back. Booked meal for 7:30 came at nine, in dribs and drabs, slow is the wrong word, staff carrying one plate at a time from kitchen to table! Food barely edible. Rooms as in the 1950 S Don’t go, don’t book, then you too will not be disappointed. Disgraceful hotel, staff and food. Manager , wrong word for this guy! Couldn’t tell truth if his life depended on it.

Just stayed 3 nights in Thurso and had a really good time, wolfburn distillery was great, dunnet head worth a visit and the views and walking inland as well simply great. At the royal we had room 128, which was warm, clean and everything worked fine. The staff we encountered were polite and helpful, but there are some buts. The hotel is tired and needs money spent on it both short and long term investment to improve. Is it vfm atm yes but that’s because it’s prices are low. The breakfast team need some help from management, they need confidence being built up to chat to guests and some of the previous reviews are unkind/troll like.

Meals were lovely had a pleasant stay in Thurso. Couldn't use the lifts when we had heavy cases and had to carry them up the stairs. I was shocked to find a brand new big bar of natural soap just opened cost me £5 which was left lying on the shower tray was stolen or binned when the cleaners were in and replaced it with their own mini hotel soap. Wasn't theirs and should not have touched anything not belonging to them. Room was clean and tidy. Hotel is central to shops and near the ferry port.

I only stayed for one night thankfully. The hotel looks like it has been taken over at some point in time and the previous owners have won awards for the standard of the hotel. You can see where the awards once hung on the front wall by the front of the hotel, It looks like no money has been spent on it since. The whole place needs a complete refit and update. It is musty, smelly and uninviting. The room descriptions we inaccurate too. On checking out - none of us were asked how our stay was - for fear of what feedback we might give! At breakfast, the chef refused to cook poached eggs because he didn't want to. The waiting staff all look like they're from an Adams family movie! It is centrally located and this is the only plus point for the hotel. My advice is to avoid like the plague. I'll never be going back.
