My now wife and I were lucky enough to have our winter wedding at Boath House in late December 2022. It was a truly magical day and stay from start to finish. Massimo and his team couldn’t have been more accommodating and helpful but never imposed; nothing was too much trouble. Needless to say the setting is spectacular, the food is second-to-none and the rooms top class. We couldn’t recommend Boath House highly enough, it was a spectacular and unforgettable experience.
My husband and I never get out for a meal anymore so when we get the chance to go out we like to make sure we go somewhere nice. Boath House did not disappoint. It has the right touch of class but isn’t too fussy. Had salmon and cucumber for starter, beetroot salad main and conramach for dessert. What a treat! Every mouthful was delicious. Service was impeccable too. We will be back! Soon!
We have been for lunch at The Kale Yard on 3 occasions under the previous ownership. Today we had lunch under the new ownership in the now called Garden Cafe restaurant which is the same building. The service, food and wine were excellent and we felt very good value for money. We both had the prawns and squid £8, shared an amazing wood fired pizza £12 and apple crumble £6. Wines per glass were also good at £6 for 125ml. Beautiful glassware, pared back furnishings, efficient service and excellent staff made for a high quality experience. We count ourselves as well travelled and have stayed and dined in some of the top hotels and restaurants in the UK and Europe. We do not agree with the various comments and posts on here. If you like the old fashioned chintz and fussiness of the old Boath you will notice a significant change in style but if you value quality, style, pared back elegance and the kind of vibe you would find in a top sophisticated hotel in Europe then do stay and dine. We highly recommend. If you have any sense of style, don’t listen to the critics, they have no idea what they are missing.…
The hotel changed owners and philosophies. It was once a luxury place with all the amenities. It is now very spartan and there are people that will find that appealing. The restaurant is a very casual place in the garden with a small menu and pizza. My objection is that the website and interactions with the hotel provided no indication of the change of direction and no restaurant menu. The room cost is still in the luxury price range. We felt deceived and disappointed and we will not be back.
I don't usually write reviews, as a hotelier myself I know how damaging and misrepresenting they can be, but I feel Boath House has been very unfairly criticised since the new ownership and renovations and I want to share my opinion. We stayed at Boath House twice in 2021 at the end of the previous ownership when it had a charm but was showing signs of underinvestment and neglect. We loved it then, for the peace & for the baths ! Having had to cancel my July booking at the last minute, we eventually managed a well earned break last night, and we were definately NOT disappointed. Boath House has been redecorated in a sympathetic and refreshing style, walls and woodwork are painted in subtle cream making the rooms fresh, clean and airy with all the wonderful original features and antique furniture restored to become the focus. Our room had all the necessary facilities (kettle, real chamomile tea (lovely!), a trendy Bluetooth speaker, excellent Wifi, but no TV (which is absolutely the way to go, i shall be removing them from my hotel rooms soon). The result is a tranquil and stylish retreat. I've never stayed in hotel rooms (and bathrooms) as big as those at Boath House anywhere, all with views of the well kept gardens and ponds. Breakfast was an excellent and interesting choice of dishes in the impressive dining room with beautiful parque floor and sun streaming in through original bay windows. The Garden Cafe continues to serve delicious, unpretentious food and wines in a gorgeous relaxed setting. Congratulations Boath House ! Keep daring to do what you believe in and ignore the critics. You are top of my Scottish hotel list.…
Wow this once fabulous house has sadly gone to the pits. My third time staying here on vacation and definitely the last. First time stay under the new custodian and they have basically trashed the place. Food and service used to be amongst the best we experienced whilst in Scotland. Now? Awful! Both breakfast and dinner were very basic and the staff clueless. The most disappointing food and stay of our 3 week tour around Scotland. Where has the luxury gone? Extortionate prices for their sub standard offerings. The manager should be ashamed of his attempt at professional hospitality, he was so RUDE!
I have chosen to rate Boath House 3/5 instead of 2/5 which is what I originally chose as there is an element of personal preference to some of the things we didn’t like about BH and I accept that for others this may not be the case. We are relatively local (within one hour) and booked two nights as a little getaway from our busy seasonal business. For the price tag we expected luxury and relaxation and a chance to reboot before heading back to our busy lives. Another review I read described the interiors as monastic and this is very accurate. Our room was completely void of frills, comfort, character or luxury. In some spaces in the main house, the minimalist decor is nice but for the most part it just misses the mark and comes across as stark and bare. It is very instagramable, but doesn’t inspire comfort. We booked a dog friendly room, which I appreciate might also have meant we didn’t receive the level of comfort expected. The grounds are lovely and our dogs were made to feel very welcome. My greatest disappointment was with the room, which was called Writers Studio. It was stark, basic and uncomfortable. No character or effort made to decorate. The bedroom was a white box with a divan bed on wheels that scooted across the room when you got into bed! We lost our pillows down the back in the night as the bed rolled away from the wall. It felt a bit like a spare room in a student flat! There was a small kitchenette, which we didn’t use but looked to contain everything you might need for semi-self catering. A small sitting room with stove and two armchairs. This is perhaps nice in the winter, but with very few small windows the studio was dark, hot and airless. The bathroom was also small and the loo leaked a puddle on the floor everytime it was flushed. Again, no frills or defining features here. The room was not very clean when we arrived. There were a lot of wood lice in the bathroom and sitting room - which doesn’t massively bother us but to others it might. Our dinner reservation was cancelled at relatively last minute but to be fair to them they made every effort to book us into a local pub for dinner. In times like these, these things happen so again it wasn’t a big deal. We didn’t sleep well - bed issues and airless rooms - and so decided to leave early and bail on the second night. It’s a shame, and just so completely not what we had hoped for. We paid £320 per night and I just don’t feel it was worth it.…
We stayed in The Writer’s Cottage in the walled garden for one night in July. The Boath House is conveniently close to Inverness airport where we were headed the next day after a wonderful week in the Highlands. We were notified earlier in the day that most of the kitchen staff had gone down with Covid so a Plan B was needed for dinner. Massimo provided us with a number of appealing alternative options. We opted for a BBQ in the garden. It could not have been more delightful. They set up a table and brazier for us in the beautiful fruit and vegetable garden and we had a private al fresco dinner as the sun went down. The food, service and ambience were spot-on. The cottage was charming and well appointed, and the whole place has a relaxed, comfortable vibe. We wished we had more time there and we will definitely return.…
My first time at the hotel and it is very difficult to fault. It is not a big hotel (thankfully), but the building is spectacular and the grounds are incredible, mostly wild paths around a lake, and a huge walled garden. Someone described the hotel as Monastic as an insult .. it is relatively minimal (no chinz) but delicately decorated and every piece as a purpose. The artworks are real (!) and truly eclectic and superbly curated. There is a subtle classical jazz background, so if you are after some tranquility within beautiful surroundings, I would check in. Finally, the service and people are great - they are friendly, passionate about the place and its history, not in your face, but always attentive. I dont know what the hotel was like before, but it is great now and I will be recommending Boath House to all of my friends.…
No many there when we arrived at Garden restaurant. Only family at one table got up and left after seeing menu.We would have done same, but had voucher.New owners trying to make the place something it is not.Something it is, is empty, cold, not inviting and not family orientated.Shared menu! Side dressing is just lettuce leaves. We asked for tomatoes and told they only had sun dried.
