Lovely stay at the old swan, our twin room was a good size with a large bathroom, clean and tidy, was told on arrival room wouldn’t be serviced over weekend but towels and tea and coffee available from reception, also it is a card only hotel no cash accepted the staff we pleasant but over worked especially in the bar area. The hotel is a Victorian hotel and as is such full of character but very dated but we knew this before we arrived, found some of the previous review a little harsh (if you want modern and up todate book a travel lodge) great location for town and bars would stay again

The hotel is clean and the beds are comfortable but thats where the positives end. Rooms are very dated and clearly haven’t had any significant refurbishments for a long time. We booked a twin and when we got to the room we found it was a double. Went back to reception who said they had no information to show that a twin was requested despite our confirmation email showing, “1 night, 2 adults, Twin room.” The housekeeping team came and separated the beds so at least that was sorted. The furniture in the room was so old it was barely standing. Even touching the desk sightly caused it to wobble like it was about to collapse. The window frames were old wooden and rotting. The window latch in the bedroom was broken and either a previous guest or housekeeping had propped it open using a cup from the bathroom. There was no tea or coffee in the room, just 3 hot chocolate sachets and 1 tiny milk carton. Parking was also an extra £10 for the night. Overall, this hotel isn’t worth anywhere near the £115 per night we paid to stay here and I would not stay here again.

We had a large room overlooking the front lawns of the hotel; whilst the room was large, the bathroom (a retro-fit) was tiny. Its a great hotel, though, with enormous charm and style. If it is old world atmosphere you are looking for, you can't beat this. The staff are superb too, and the dining room is simply mind-blowing. We did find the whole place horrendously over-heated, so if you like to be warm, this is the place for you. despite its undeniable foibles, it is a fantastic place to stay and we will definitely go again.

Had stayed in this hotel previously and had no complaints, however after reading some of the recent reviews was beginning to wonder if I should cancel the booking but decided to give it a go. Check in was very good and efficient. Lovely lady at the desk, very pleasant and very efficient. Arrived earlier than the 2pm check in time but room was ready. Double room which was a decent size, clean and well equipped. Didnt get the bathrobes, slippers and luxury toiletries which were in the room description but wasn't a cause for complaint. Bathroom clean, with nice big towels, plenty of hot water and a very good shower. As other people have said tv signal was intermittent but there has been major problems with the transmitter in this area so hardly the fault of the hotel, plus I don't go away to sit in a room watching TV! Didn't have breakfast or dinner so can't comment on the food. Bar area very clean staff continually cleaning surfaces which was good to see. Yes the hotel is old and could probably do with a bit if an upgrade in certain areas, but no way was it filthy and uninhabitable as some reviews have suggested . Would return again.

Stayed here for 3 days with my husband, the staff were all very friendly and happy to tell us all the history of the hotel, including the Agatha Christie story. They even gave us the room key to go and view the room that she stayed in, now named Agatha on the second floor. The hotel is ideally situated, only 5 mins walk into the town centre.
