This well-known landmark is an amalgamation of historic buildings dating from the 15th and 18th centuries, known as a number of names, including The Crown during King Henry VIII's reign. However, eventually it was named The Royal Hop Pole when Queen Mary visited in 1937 and gave it the official 'Royal.' Charles Dickens even mentions The Royal Hop Pole in his first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Other interesting information and pictures are located all over the hotel, including information on how the Medieval Banqueting Hall was discovered when the hotel was recently refurbished. The Royal Hop Pole has its own beautiful garden which leads to the banks of The River; there you can see picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and the Malverns. Please note, we do not have a lift and, due to the nature of our historic building, all of our rooms are located up at least one flight of stairs.

Cannot fault the value for money here, great spot near the river, was easy to get permit for parking when checking in. Spacious room and usual reliable breakfast fayre. We were on 2nd floor and there's no lift and the stairs are a little tricky when carrying your suitcase. Despite a poor night's sleep as our bed was way too uncomfortable (Room 202), we kept rolling into each other towards the middle of the bed all night but I would stay here again, just wouldn't want to stay in same room.

Decided to eat here before checking into a nearby hotel. This place is above the usual Wetherspoons standard. This Inn was mentioned in Pickwick Papers apparently. The staff were great and the food and drink very enjoyable. I returned for a drink later that day.

Recently stayed here in a lovely Feature Room, the room was large with a huge window overlooking the river at the back of the hotel, the bathroom was big, there was Tea/Coffee/Water and biscuits in the room, a breakfast wasn't included but we had a lovely breakfast the next morning in Wetherspoons, a great breakfast at a great price, we would definitely stay here again.

Granted Tewkesbury is a more genteel town than most but even so I'd hazard that this is the best Wetherspoons pub in the UK. Beautifully situated on the river Avon the beer garden is a joy in fine weather. Everything you need in a great place.

Plenty of free parking round the back. Just park up and go and get a permit from reception. Nice room, nice bar, nice beer garden. Typical Wetherspoons. Good location in the centre of town. The only downside was the wifi didn't work. We were only there for one night so not really a problem. Will stay again if in the area.

Just stayed 2 nights at this hotel. Large room, comfortable bed and very convenient location with parking. Also ate at the hotel and meals were excellent and speedily provided. I would especially comment on the staff generally at the hotel who were cheerful and always seemed to care that visitors or diners were happy and any requirements were met. I would be happy to recommend this hotel.

Wonderful historic hotel run by Wetherspoons so is also incredibly well priced. I love old buildings so my husband specifically booked a feature room requesting "the most interesting feature room available". On checking in we were advised that there was only 1 feature room, it has a nice view and a larger bed. Indeed it does, as well as a generous en-suite but no medieval features... which was disappointing. So, I spoke to the lovely lady on reception and explained my expectations and asked if there were any rooms with interesting medieval features available. There was and it seems this is not an uncommon request... every other historical hotel I have stayed in described festure rooms as those with historic architectural features and this initial disappointment and the fzct we paid more for a feature room is the reason it gets 4. The room we actually stayed in was fabulous, more of a small suite than a room. It had the bed with an alcove at one end and seating and a desk at the other. 2 windows and a small en-suite. The room had low beams, uneven floors, sloping ceilings and steep stairs. It was also quite warm but this was unsurprising given the weather and fans were provided. There were also bottles of water, biscuits and hot chocolate with the usual tea and coffee. This hotel has a medieval hall and lots of rooms with historic features. We stayed in 301 and 107 has medieval wall art. Even the main bar area is architecturally interesting. The view in the photos is from the "feature room" and the others from the wonderfully quirky third floor room overlooking the road.

Stayed at this hotel for one night.check in was excellent and very friendly, the young girl on reception called Shannon even offered to help take our bags upstairs, you don’t get that service in some five star hotels.the room was small and basic but did the job. We would definitely stay again next time in Tewksbury.
