This is the 3rd year in a row that my partner and I have stayed here for the Cheltenham races, and once again we really enjoyed our stay. We were put in the top floor room which was quiet, clean, MASSIVE and comfortable and we had the most amazing view from our window too. We have provisionally booked ourselves in...

I've stayed at The Hop Pole - as part of a group - for the past four or five years during Cheltenham Festival week and can't fault it. The building is old and quirky, but is in a great location and has a great deal of charm - a world away from a typical budget travel hotel. The atmosphere throughout...

Excellent service and value. We were particularly impressed with the efficient and friendly staff. Also the quality of the room was most impressive and complete with Medieval wall decoration! Will come again.

Only stayed here for one night, but it was well worth the cheap Sunday rate that we paid. Once you check in you get given a free car park permit for the euro park at the back of the establishment (permit is valid all day on departure day as well as over-night). The bar/eating area is a little tired, but...

We often go on a Wetherspoons "Trail", in which we have a few days away driving to another part of the country, staying, usually two nights in each place, at a Wetherspoons Hotel. This Hotel lived up to our expectations based on past experience. As always, the staff friendliness courtesy and helpfulness were impeccable, and there was no fault to...

We have stayed here once before and this time was just as good. Lovely beamed bedroom with views of river and part of the Abbey.. Eating area downstairs is a little run down, however, we were told it is closing later this month for refurbishment.. Look forward to visiting again.

Room was fairly standard, with all the usual amenities; no complaints. It was a Friday night, and the bar area was quite loud, but thankfully our room on the second floor was quiet. Service was friendly and helpful. We had two bikes that needed to be stored overnight, and they were happy to lock them up in the cellar for...

Really well situated to explore Tewkesbury. Lovely building and brilliant staff. I noticed it was very popular with the locals of all ages. Room was spacious, clean and warm. Food great value well presented and served on average within 10 mins.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This well-known landmark is an amalgamation of historic buildings dating from the 15th and 18th centuries, known as a number of names, including The Crown during King Henry VIII's reign. However, eventually it was named The Royal Hop Pole when Queen Mary stayed in 1937 and gave it the official 'Royal.' Charles Dickens even mentions The Royal Hop Pole in his first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Other interesting information and pictures are located all over the hotel, including information on how the Medieval Banqueting Hall was discovered when the hotel was recently refurbished. The Royal Hop Pole has its own beautiful garden which leads to the banks of The River; there you can see picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and the Malverns. ... more   less
