I stayed here in 2003 for a night by recommendation of a friend. He told me that it would be a unique and rare Parisian experience to stay here. It was. The hotel looks like any of the many small and run-down places you can find all over Paris. The rooms, accessible through a staircase you would never get down...

I brought my mother to Paris for her birthday. This hotel was a true find. Having lived in Paris, I preferred staying some place where you wake up and know where you are - rather than a typical chain hotel that looks the same everywhere. Hotel Esmeralda is right near Metro St. Michel - so we spent much time walking...

I stayed here in 1996 for 4 days. I wasn't expecting too much. However, the ambiance and location exceeded my expectations. I never asked for a wake up call. I woke up everyday to the chimes of the Notre Dame. The views were wonderful and I loved being in the bustling, multi-cultural and colourful latin quarter. It's a great and...

As others did I booked by phone (in french is best, their english is shaky) and confirmed by fax as requested. I then phoned up twice in the following couple of weeks (to their amusement) to check because I was was fretting that our booking would have evaporated. It hadn't and it was fine. The room - as I imagine...

I had read good and bad reviews of this atmospheric, charming hotel and gathered from them that what some people hate others love. Paris has few, more conviniently placed, friendly and truely charismatic hotels. At 80 euros for a stunning view of Notre Dame, you cant go wrong. No breakfast available but if you are too lazy to find a...

We stayed at the Esmeralda Hotel on September 2007, for almost one week. We loved the hotel, it's very very lovely and romantic. It isn't a modern hotel, there's not the lift or the frigo bar; the rooms are pretty, but not very clean (and the bathrooms too). But the atmosphere is magic, the location is good (near the latin...

Hotel Esmeralda is bohemian and quirky. The location is superb. Notre Dame is just a few feet away and I enjoyed waking up to the hustle and bustle of Parisien life. Our room was actually two joined together with a bathroom ensuite. The staff were lovely. The chambermaid always tucked my daughters teddy in her bed when she made it...

As an experienced budget traveler, I come with the mindset that the hotel is just somewhere to sleep and bath, but I wouldn't recommend this hotel for either. First the smell of gas is so overpowering, it was not possible to sleep without the window open, even in December. Next, the bathtub and bathroom were not clean. As we went...

Folks were visiting me and my family in Scotland from New Zealand. For my mum's 60th birthday I booked cheap Ryanair flights - took her, my dad and my 3month old baby for two nights and three days in Paris. Read the reviews about Hotel Esmeralda - budget wise, closeness, friendliness, cleanliness and those STAIRS. It was everything that we...

Staying in Odeon / Saint-Michel

Neighbourhood Profile
Odeon / Saint-Michel
As the bustling center of entertainment for the residents of the Rive Gauche, the activity at Odéon never stops. Boulevards are lined with traditional cafes, restaurants, and boutique cinemas. The streets surrounding the fountain at Saint-Michel provide eateries from around the world. Lively bars are just next door and the prototypical terraced French brasserie is on every corner. The setting for this area is second to none; the Haussmann-style boulevards are contrasted by monumental architecture and overshadowed by the iconic Notre Dame, all within a moment’s walk from the Seine. This neighbourhood's world-famous bookshops, cafés, and streets will not fail to impress you.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
One of the most original hotels in the French capital. Opened over 100 years ago in a 17th century building, the Esmeralda Hotel bears the name of the gypsy girl that, thanks to her grace, illuminated the story by Victor Hugo. Central, well communicated, charming, quiet, comfortable ... Each room is unique and has its own personality. Artists such as Hugo Pratt, Béjart, Gainsbourg ... were regular clients at the hotel. You can also talk about Paris, art and literature as most of our receptionists are writers and poets with PhD at the Sorbonne. Please, do not miss the authentic flavor of the Latin Quarter. Be warmly welcomed at the nearest hotel to Notre Dame for the best value for money in Paris: the staff will immediately address all your queries with their proverbial kindness. ... more   less
