Visited the abbey hotel as part of a cycle trip with my boyfriend - well worth the detour! The hotel brilliantly integrates modern hotel comforts without loosing the medieval calmness of the location. Probably our favourite moment was getting to wander the abbey at night - rarely have a seen the stars so bright in Europe.

L'Hotel within the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is a perfect example of the magic that can be achieved when restorers and architects work together to get things right. This ancient space has been renovated to be a luxury hotel with simple but refined taste that shows in every detail--unobtrustive signage, noble but pure materials used for furnishings and details, and...

Our third stay over about a 15 year period. And although it's a lovely location the hotel itself just gets weirder and weirder. There is clearly a high powered design team behind the scenes and the result is very high quality (the French state is paying, after all). But although things may work for slim 30 something Frenchmen, they don't...

We arrived in a torrential downpour with lots of luggage (2 couples) we had no idea how to get to the hotel, a bollard blocked the drive which we deduced was the only access. After phoning reception a van was sent to collect us. The hotel need to explain that the only way to access the hotel is by foot...

This is a very special place. Its setting could hardly be better but the hotel itself is beautifully done. The staff are very welcoming and all seemed to speak very good English. Our room was modern and spacious. The bed was as good as we have ever experienced. Breakfast is served in a cloister/undercroft area - beautifully renovated. The range...

We stayed for one night on our way to Paris with my husband and 2 young daughters. We were all SO impressed with this beautiful hotel - every detail has been perfected and whilst very modern the small touches still reflect its historic past. It is set in the most stunning grounds with 24 hour access to the breathtaking Abbey...

Having visited Fontevraud before I kept at the chance to stay within the complex. it was just as special as I had hoped. Seeing all those splendid buildings early in the morning and late at night was a real treat. The hotel has just been refurbished with a modern finish and comfortable beds. The designers have however been given free...

How anyone can say this is anything but excellent? The staff were attentive and eager to please. I so enjoyed being inside the Abbey grounds overnight. I enjoyed everything this hotel had to offer. And of course I had a wondeful sleep. I will be planning my next trip here for the future.

This hotel is part of the 11th century abbey complex at Fontevraud, already one of the most stunning architectural jewels in France. Rather like the paradores in Spain, the government own it and lease it to the management on a not-for-profit basis. It's absolutely wonderful, beautifully restored and decorated in a soothing, minimalist style that complements the architecture perfectly. Every...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A stay at the heart of Fontevraud Royal Abbey? A night with Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and then Queen of England? Fontevraud L'Hotel offers an incomparable experience. At the Saint-Lazare priory, formerly the home of a community of nuns, the tradition of hospitality that is an intrinsic part of this place is being renewed. Sleeping in the tranquil silence of the Abbey, walking alone through the monastery as night falls ... These are magical private moments. The 54 rooms of this four-star hotel have been fitted out with great respect for this almost 1000 year-old monument, whose face is firmly turned towards the future. Each of the rooms is a cosy refuge: high-quality bedding, elegant contemporary furniture that uses noble materials such as oak, and is made with respect for the environment - all this made especially for Fontevraud L'Hotel ... more   less
