Detailed Reviews
Stayed here in a single room for two nights. The location is not in "downtown" Cologne, but rather across the Rhine. Hence it is much less expensive than hotels near the Cathedral. However, it is only about a twenty minute walk to the Neumarkt, and only a five minute walk to the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus. If you are in town for a conference at the Messe, this location can't be beat, as it is only a few blocks away. The neighborhood has lots of restaurants and shops nearby.
The hotel staff was very friendly. The room was no frills, but clean and comfortable. They provided a large bottle of sparkling water every day, which was very much appreciated, and at reception they have fruit and daily newspapers. The breakfast was plentiful and very good, but the breakfast room is small so if you are staying over a weekend, I would recommend getting there early so as to get a table.
The hotel's website promised internet throughout the building, however it was extremely patchy on the third level where I stayed. Apparently the wireless was better in the breakfast room, although I didn't go down to try it.

Simple small hotel, old but clean, centrally located in Deutz and good option for one overnight. The rooms are small, no balcony, equipped with TV, small shower but (suprise, surprise) every room is equipped with a tablet computer free if charge and already connected with the wifi. There is no elevator available and the hotel has some 3 floors with very steep and tight stairways. Many typical bars and restaurants in the neighborhood. Breakfast is offered at the sister hotel some 300 yds distance on the main road.

We were told to move to the other building called "Deutzer Eck" which we were not expecting since we booked Alt Deutz. It was also so hot but the room had no fan, had no idea we had to share the bathroom with other guests until we got there. Talking of which, the shower drain was blocked but the staff didn't seem to care. There was a free bottle of water everyday but it was always sparkling. We also wanted a double bed but instead got 2 single beds. The cleaner came in early without knocking! It's basic manners. Sadly if I visited Cologne again, I'd pick a different place to stay.

Dear traveltimes27, first of all, we would like to thank you for your stay at Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena. We regret that you have obtained a negative impression of your stay, which is mainly due to misunderstandings upon reservation of your stay and your experience in our building Alt Deutzer Eck. We would like to point out that our guests are accommodated either in our main building, or in our annex building Alt Deutzer Eck, which can be reached in less than one minute on foot. Both buildings feature equal services and facilities. Perhaps you have overlooked this information, but it is clearly mentioned upon reservation, in the confirmation e-mail and on all booking platforms, as well as on our website. We offer different types of guestrooms, most of them have an en-suite bathroom. For travelers seeking a convenient and a well-priced accommodation, we also offer guestrooms with a shared bathroom. In general these rooms offer the same facilities as our guestrooms with an en-suite bathroom. From your feedback we can see that you had opted for one of our rooms with a shared bathroom. We would like to point out that the different room types are clearly differentiated and described in detail on all booking platforms, as well as on our website. Nevertheless, we regret not to have suggested a different room to you during your stay with us in Cologne. We also offer double and twin-bedded rooms and try to accommodate our guests’ preferences accordingly. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee such type of preference due to limited availability. Dear traveltimes27, regarding your experience with our cleaning personnel and the congested shower drain, we would like to express our deepest apologies. We have taken your comments as an inducement to train our personnel more intensively in terms of proactiveness and reticence. Despite your experiences you have made during your stay, we would be more than happy to welcome you again in Cologne and to give you the occasion to be accommodated in a different room that meets your expectations. Warm regards, S.R. Robinson -Manager-

I travel a lot, and myself I have been working for many years at the front desk in the hotel, but this is the first time I have encountered such a situation.
I came to Cologne for work and booked this hotel solely because of it’s proximity to the exhibition. The price is not high and I understand that this is a very simple place, I do not have any special expectations and claims. I looked at the photos of the rooms (on one of the famous e-commerce website, but booked directly on the hotel’s website, decided to save them a commission), it seemed to be clean with a lot of positive comments...On arrival, I was given a room on the third floor. Having risen and opened the door of the corridor, I already felt a sharp unpleasant smell and in the room it was just everywhere! The smell of mold so strongly permeated the room that it was simply impossible to breathe in it! Terribly dirty carpet, an old bathroom with a smell from the sewer, a shower in which I would not dare to wash without flip flops, a washbowl in the room... Physically it is just impossible to stay in this room and I sincerely do not understand how the hotel can sell a room that does not meet the sanitary standards. I went to the front desk, explained the situation and kindly asked to change the room. There were no more rooms in this category and I asked if there were any other rooms, I was ready to pay the difference in price. But to my surprise, the only solution on the part of the hotel was to book a new room (bigger one, but at the same price as the one that can not be lived in) as my room was booked at a non-refundable price! I understand the cancellation policy, but why should a room where you can't stay without risking your health be my problem? If there is no longer the same room available, shouldn't I get any other OK room in this situation? It is not a whim and I do not ask for a replacement because I do not like the color of the walls! I really think that this is unfair, the photos of rooms on the Internet are quite different and do not correspond to the horror that is actually here.
As a result, I had to pay for a room with mold as it was booked with a non-refundable rate and the full price for the second room, which at least has no carpet and you can breathe in it. Well, the mold in the bathroom is probably everywhere. There are no words, it is really my first negative review ever, I'm not a supporter of spoiling the reputation, but in this case I can not be silent.
Regarding breakfast I can’t say anything as it is my first and for sure the only one night here, I only know that it is outside in another building.

We value all feedback as the comfort and well being of our guests is of the utmost importance to us and we would like to apologise for this less than perfect experience. Contacted hotel for information and finding solutions for a possible stay. The manager stated she also was the owner of the hotel. In the course of discussion, she bluntly said she is not interested in customer satisfaction, she does not need it, she does not care for the hotel reputation... I told her I would leave a comment ...unbelievable!!!

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We are very sorry you felt your request was not dealt with as you expected. Unfortunately, as you chose a special non-refundable rate via booking.com, this discount does have specific conditions attached which are clearly explained on the website. Out of respect for other guests who may have chosen a rate with different conditions we regret that no changes or modifications are permitted. We can understand your disappointment but hope that we will have a chance to welcome you in our hotel on a future occasion. Kind regards, S.R. Robinson, Manager

My daughter and I stayed in Hotel Alt Duetz on our arrive to Cologne. It is a bit hard to locate but once found is in a nice area of Duetz (old Cologne). The rooms were clean and very comfortable. The breakfast (included) was wonderful and traditionally German. The staff were VERY helpful. I had booked tickets for a cruise and the staff offered to print them for me (required for the cruise). Unfortunately, the confirmation did not come before our checkout.
However, once it did come I forwarded my email to the staff at Alt Duetz who printed it out and met me at the door so that we were not late for the cruise. This is above and beyond service!

My stay at Hotel Alt Deutz was average at best, but that wasn't the worst part about the experience. After I had paid the receptionist, I check my account balance the same day and realised they had charged me twice! I contacted them ongoing for over 2 weeks, sending evidence such as screenshots of my bank account statement, which showed "Hotel Alt Deutz" deducted my account twice (the exact same amount) on two separate days. Finally I called them (an expensive international call) and the receptionist on the phone was not only rude, but probably one of the worst customer service representatives I've encountered. Without listening to my case she would interrupt and talk over me. When I asked for other numbers - such as vendors, agencies, even just to speak to someone of higher authority like a manager she replied, "I'm not giving you a single number". Lost over $250 because of the double booking. I will try to contact my own bank tomorrow, but they could have at least tried to be friendlier and more accommodating...the rooms themselves were average. Probably the highlight was the close supermarket. The bathrooms were the dirtiest I've stayed in, sleeping was a bit of a struggle with street noise.

Dear Ellen S, first of all we would like to thank you for your stay at Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena. We regret that you found your stay not overall satisfying, which is mainly due to the misunderstanding regarding your credit card balances. We would like to explain again, as previously by mail and phone, that you were definitely not charged twice. With any reservation our hotel receives we pre-authorize the given credit card in order to make sure there are no fraud or fictitious numbers. This is not only for the safety of our business, but also the safety of our guests in means of credit card abuse. The pre-authorized (or blocked/reserved) amount is valid for seven days, during which the hotel would be able to claim the reserved amount against the card issuing institute. It serves as a kind of guarantee. After this time period the amount is released automatically through the issuing bank. The vendor has no influence on the release time. There are issuing banks that take one day, others overseas take up to three or four weeks. This is depending on the credit frame and the bank, not us the vendor. Some banks show the reserved/Pre-authorized amount on the credit card balance as charged, since it is taken out of the spending frame, based on the card and card owner. Others do not. Again, this amount is not charged to our guests, but only blocked on their credit card, this only for a limited period of time. This is a common practice with hotels or e.g. card rentals. By providing the credit card upon reservation this is also communicated in the terms and conditions. Dear Ellen S, in the meantime the issue should be solved to your satisfaction. We are very sorry that this misunderstanding could not be solved right away. Also, we are a bit disappointed on your overall rating of our hotel, especially your comment on our bathrooms. Should there have been any lack in cleanliness, which there was not when we checked the room. We would have been happy to solve this directly after getting to know. Our reception team is always there and happy to help with any individual claims, guest wishes and requests and we receive a lot of positive comments on friendliness and helpfulness of our team on different websites. Dear Ellen S, besides all misunderstandings and impressions during this stay, we would be happy to welcome you as our guest again for your next visit to Cologne and have the chance to proof we can do better and convince you of our hotel, its services and the team. With warm regards, on behalf of the entire team of Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena, S.R. Robinson -Manager-

I have been visiting Cologne on business for over 30 years. Stayed at many hotels. For an exhibition in March that is held every 2 years, my company booked several rooms in 4 locations, one of which was the Alt-Deutz. We have had to cancel rooms at 2 of the locations. Some hotels have free cancellation policy until almost the last day, others not. The Alt-Deutz has a 2-week policy. We missed the deadline by a few hours, and were charged the full amount. We tried every possible means to ask for flexibility, knowing full-well that there would be no problem for the hotel to get another booking. They not only refused, there were extremely rude. And I am referring to the manager. They are NOT, as claimed, 'your friendly hotel in Cologne'.

Dear StephenPohlmann, we would like to thank you for your review on Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena and to express our regret, that you do not agree with our hotel’s policies. Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena offers a very fair, competitive and up-to-date pricing, which is reviewed on a daily basis. As already discussed by phone and in person, we ask for your kind understanding, that in order to be able to provide such a good value for money ratio in a hotel with as limited availability as ours, we need to attach our roomrates to clear and strict terms and conditions, which are published to all guests at the time of booking. With their confirmation our guests agree to the booking conditions. In case of changing plans after booking, we recommend to procure a travel cancellation insurance. Thank you for your understanding. With warm regards, on behalf of the entire team of Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena, S.R. Robinson -Manager-

You need to exit at the Koln Messe Deutz station. It is on the opposite side of the river from Main Bahnhof and is closer to your hotel. You can also get off at the main Bahnhof of but will have to walk across the river or take a taxi to get to hotel. As far as your bed preference, you will need to contact the hotel.
Yes confirmed.
Purtroppo non sono stato li in quel periodo quindi non so come aiutarti. L'albergo è carino e la location è molto bella però non so veramente sotto natale quanto casino ci possa essere
Dear Mrs. Lucy,
Thank you for your interest shown in Hotel Alt Deutz City-Messe-Arena, Cologne.
We do recommend the public garage at the nearby LanxessArena. His garage is opened 24 hours a day and offers video surveillance. It can be reached easily within three minutes by car and 3 – 5 minutes on foot. The parking fee is € 12,00 for 24 hours or € 1,30 per hour. These spots are offered directly by the garage and we cannot guarantee availability or up-to-dateness of the tariffs. However, as per our experience there has hardly been a shortage of car parking space in the past. Assistance with this matter will be offered upon check in at the hotel. Advanced reservation is not possible. Simply mention your request to our receptionist and we will be happy to guide you accordingly.
Upon arrival we recommend to stop your car within the loading zone right in front of the hotel and to proceed for check in. During check-in we will be pleased to further explain the shortest way to the garage and to hand over a way description. For your own convenience we would like to ask you to unload your luggage first before leaving for the car park.
Should you have any queries or require further information please do not hesitate to contact us immediately.
Yours sincerely,
Hotel Alt Deutz City - Messe - Arena
