The hotel is just across the road from the pedestrianised town centre so really well located. Parking was free if you parked in the surface car park.

The reception lobby was very ornate and hotel room was large. Only issue was a lack of aircon. As it was so hot the reception staff were happy to give large electric fans to anyone who asked for one to plug in their bedrooms.

Spent a weekend here and was happy about the choice of hotel. My room was quite nice, probably renovated quite recently. Nice bathroom with a shower that for once had a good water pressure. The location is also very central, short distance to most of what’s on offer in Dortmund. If I come back I would not mind staying here again.

I visited the hotel with 3 friends, we booked over 3 months before our visit requesting twin rooms but had a double. The staff eventually changed it but were not at all helpful and in one case very unhelpful. I was informed my request for 2 twin rooms 3 and a half months in advance was "a wish" rather than a booking despite asking for confirmation at the time of booking my 'Wish" was only denied on the day of my arrival.
The hotel is difficult to find at first as the entrance is the same one as the Novum Unique Hotel and the Excelsior is a wing of that hotel. It is also obviously a lower star rating the the Unique which also wasn't clear when booking.
The rooms were basic and functional but spacious. The room and en suite were very clean but drab. The furniture and bed very basic.
There was tea and coffee in the room but 1 coffee, 1 milk, 1 teabag etc. per person. One day it was not replenished in our 4 day stay.
The TV had limited channels but was adequate.
The overall impression was that the room was adequate and not a pleasure to stay there.
On the plus side the location is excellent and has free Wifi which was a good service.
To recap the hotel is adequate, clean and tidy. The staff functional rather than friendly. It did not though offer value for money and I would stay elsewhere if I returned to Dortmund.

Stayed for 2 nights with the wife. The staff are the most moody miserable people we encountered in Dortmund! We never saw a grin let least a smile! The room we was in was freezing cold! There was no temperature control just a radiator controlled by the hotel we assume, we had a couple of single summer quilts in the dead of winter which wasn’t ideal. Trying to speak to the staff about anything honestly made me want to hang myself! Beautiful looking hotel and a great location for the centre and train station, would I stay again? Not for the price we paid I wouldn’t! Some happier staff and some common sense heat wise in the freezing cold winter and this hotel would be very very good. This is an honest review and is a constructive criticism along with major positive points....the poor reviews are the ones to learn from!!!

I mean the relatively cheap champagne is quite ok but the heat is unbearable. You feel like chicken wings being fried in vgetable oil. I would recommend a portable ventilator. Please book in the winter or you will sweat your balls off!

I have stayed at this hotel a couple of times in the past year and will do again in the future.
The location of the hotel is perfect for visiting Dortmund with the town centre on the doorstep and Westfalenstadion just a twenty minute walk up the road. The rooms are genuinely spotless and cleaned daily with fresh towels left. The rooms do get warm but open the window slightly and problem solved. The communal areas are also kept spotless, the decor of the hotel is a bit funky and you will either love or hate it.
The aquariums within the lobby look ok however if you are relaxing in the evening it is lovely to sit in that area of the ground floor. For the price of this hotel it really is brilliant however do not ever drink the bottled water as it is disgustingly over priced but most European hotels are guilty of this.
The reception staff are always happy to help and speak perfect English, they will happily hold your bags for you if you check out and have a while to wait for a flight etc.

Attached to the hotel is a Pfefferkorn which I demand you try the ‘Happy Day’ main course. Whilst not actually part of the hotel this does add to the experience.

The hotel loses a star for having loud guests on each of my visits, they do not seem to be asked to keep the noise down regardless of how often you ask reception. With this in mind though it’s possible that I was just unlucky with the dates I stayed.
If you are visiting the city I fully recommend you stay here, maybe you can buy me a beer and sit amongst the aquariums too.

Very clean rooms and public spaces, but there is no air conditioning and to sleep with windows open means that it’s very noisy from traffic and ambulance sirens almost all night. The bathroom is tiny and the shower floor extremely slippery. You have been warned... proceed at your own risk.

Mezmerizing entrance, englishsspeaking staff and short way to main shopping street of Dortmund. Very thin walls, so a lot of noise. Confusing setup of the rooms as the building houses two different hotels.

Great location and a very awesome breakfast buffet - the only thing to pick on is no lactose free milk/ almond milk and peanut butter available at the breakfast buffet.
Now a days vegan/vegetarian options plus almond/soy milk should be on every buffet.

It isn't made clear when booking that the Excelsior is a wing of the Unique Hotel, so a little confusing on arrival. The wing is like going into the servants quarters - down some steps where the carpets are less plush, corridors narrower and amenities more basic.
The room was large, but had a sparse feel to it. Windows were full of condensation in the morning, and the room was chilly in the afternoon. There was only 1 radiator which didn't seem to work.
The beds were ok, but the pillows were awful - would have been more substantial to use my coat. Doors are exceedingly thin, and unfortunately we were subjected to some rather loud, drunk neighbours talking and slamming doors.
The bathroom was also cold, with the only heat source being the towel rail. Shower was tiny, and your bum keeps knocking the handle and turning it off. That said, when it stayed on the water pressure was good and it was hot.
Hotel is in a good location - 1 minute walk to the U-Bahn, and close to a number of restaurants. We were at the back, so did not have any traffic noise and the room is clean.
If we came back to Dortmund we would not stay here.

Actually, not sure about it. There is nice Bar available, but we did not look for an in-house restaurant Nonetheless, there is a very nice Pedestrian Street right across from the hotel, with PLENTY of dining options and other shops... Hope info helps. Enjoy your visit in Dortmund.
