We booked directly with the hotel and got cancellation up to 24hrs beforehand, free drink on arrival, packed lunch on last day for travel, free travel on all local transport. The staff are very friendly and competent - this is a family run hotel. The room was compact but had everything for a long stay with comfortable beds, excellent shower... More

Do you need an elevator or desire glamorous decor? You may not want this hotel, but if that's not important, you must stay here! The decor is quite interesting. A visual tribute to Goethe (who once stayed there?), it feels like you're staying in a quaint reading nook. There's a pub/bistro on the ground floor with a free comprehensive breakfast... More

Great little hotel if you like the European experience. Clean but small rooms, great breakfast, nice cozy bar and very friendly service. They even provide a bag lunch! Pack light though, there is no elevator only stairs. Staff provided good advice on the sites to see as well as including a free bus pass to the city. And don't forget... More

The hotel is nice, typical, not so far from the center of the town, restaurants around too. Just the single rooms are very small, and there's no elevator to go up maybe at the third floor, so be careful with big luggage pieces... The breakfast is very impressive, a lot of salt/sweet food, you can also have fresh fried eggs... More

Stayed here for a couple of nights recently, while attending International football match at Gelsenkirchen. The staff are excellent; welcoming and helpful. Breakfast fantastic. Rooms clean, spacious and comfortable. Good value and does not skimp on quality

We staid in a 3 person room for 2 nights. The welcome at the hotel was very nice and the staff was very helpful. The room was of a decent size, basic furniture and extremely small bathroom. The breakfast was way above the standard of the hotel. Very good. The location is practical and the hotel provides you with tickets... More

This is a charming old fashioned hotel close to a U-Bahn station which is only two stops from the Central Station in Essen. It si very convenient if you are visiting a Trade Fair at Meese Essen which is also two stops away on the U-11 or a pleasant 15 minute walk if you are feeling energetic. There is no... More

It's a pity all hotels don't put in the same effort as these guys. From check in to check out, the staff are friendly, genuine, and helpful. With wifi throughout, an excellent home prepared breakfast, central location, and complimentary lunch bags, this hotel is a winner! It may be only 50m "off the beaten track", but that still makes this... More

Meh. I think I might have just been in Essen on a busy weekend, but this hotel was quite overpriced compared to the other places I've been in Germany. I paid less for nicer hotels in Munich, Hamburg, Aachen, Stuttgart and Berlin (which are much nicer cities). It is very clean and somewhat cute. The public transport takes a little... More
