I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Avenida. Reception and staff were welcoming, and the receptionist gave me a perfect guide of where to tour in the city. The hotel has a great view of San Sebastián. I was also glad to learn some phrases in Basque. Will return again if I ever get back out to Basque Country.
Amazing view (best in town perhaps if weather allows ;-D) pretty rooms, very charmant ambiance, good location, full with green, with a short hike. Parking outside, fancy restaurant next door. We will be back!
Great room, very comfortable bed and perfect location to see San Sebastian from above. It's not far away from the city. Just 10 Minutes walk down to the beach. Breakfast is also very good quality. Great Service!
I found this place by accident as I couldn't afford one of my usual places, and I am very glad I did! The Avenida is located halfway up Monte Igueldo (actually, it's about a third of the way up). This means it is not near the old town, and doesn't really have any amenities nearby. However, it is good for starting walks or runs, a bus goes right by it (16 I believe) and that costs only €1.25, or you can get a taxi from the old town for as little as €8. Overall, I enjoyed its location. It is a good base, but just factor in that you may want a taxi when you come home at night. It is about a 5 minute walk to the Concha beach. The hotel has a pool, however, it is not heated. Which for Basque country means you won't go in it outside of one or two months. And then it will probably be too busy. But, the views are delightful. Although not as good as from Monte Igueldo, it was really nice to wake up to and take in before going to bed. The gym is essentially a typical hotel non-gym, but there is some great running to do here, so get out! A few items of gym kit are actually dangerous. Reception was always really friendly and helpful, which I appreciated. In terms of amenities, they do breakfast for an extra fee, but outside of that you can only order a sort of room service. This can include light snacks, and alcohol, at reasonable prices. There are also vending machines, including a cigarette machine. This, amongst the general decor and design, all impressed the atmosphere of a 1960s/70s hotel, the sort of place air crew would stay. The ability to buy food and drink is limited to restrictive 'opening times'. The rooms are very well appointed, and although not having coffee making facilities, do have full supply of toiletries, good bathrooms, adequate furniture, comfortable beds, and they are big! The minibar and room service is, actually, ludicrously affordable for a hotel. Especially as you cannot pop out to the shops easily, and I really appreciate that. Because the whole hotel is clean and comfortable, and has such impressive views, it is a wonderful place to relax. Definitely a good spot for a drink before bed. And I think its location is ideal for me - I am happy to walk to town, I like to go up Monte Igueldo several times, I enjoy being out of the centre, and it is monumentally peaceful. The kicker is that when I booked I got a very good price for it. Though I returned to San Sebastian soon after, I had to stay somewhere else because the price was too high. And there is a balancing act to find here, while a hotel at the top of Monte Igueldo would be better, and cheaper places near the centre can also be very good and competitively priced. Having said this, when I go next, I will look at Hotel Avenida first. I think, as long as you can get the right price for it, it offers great value, and adds something to your stay in San Sebastian. Which is really saying something. I really look forward to going back, and introducing others to it. One warning, I found tiny spiders in my bed. I imagine the room had been vacant for a while. As such, I would always accept the maid service! Just in case.…
Rooms are large, clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. It is a fair walk down to the bay, so you need to drive, get the bus, or a taxi (7 to 10 euros). Although they don't have a restaurant, they serve platters of ham or cheese and have a very reasonable wine list. We enjoyed our stay but would go for somewhere more central if we return.
