The Hotel Riu Plaza España opened its doors in August 2019 in the Edificio España which is the 8th tallest building in Madrid, Spain, and one of the city's most iconic buildings. It is an example of 20th-century Spanish architecture built in the neo-baroque style. Located only approx. 20 km away from the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez (MAD) airport. This hotel is ideal for both leisure and business travel. The 584 modern designed, elegant decorated rooms with free Wi-Fi offer maximum comfort as well as relaxation. In the 17 stylish and modern conference rooms you can successfully organize your events and meetings. For gastronomy lovers, the guests can enjoy a buffet restaurant, as well as a Sky Bar and Lobby Bar for snacks & drinks. Visit the reinvented rooftop. The 360° terrace now has a new Gastrobar called El Edén and yet another attraction on top of its spectacular views of the capital: a transparent viewpoint looking over the recently inaugurated Plaza de España square. This glass balcony that hangs at a height of 100 metres above the ground gives our most intrepid visitors a wonderful panorama of the southern area of the capital.

We stayed at Riu for 3 nights in March and the weather was a perfect 75 degrees. We arrived at the hotel a few hours before checking in and they were able to provide us with a room which was great. The hotel included breakfast which was pretty good, and the hotel roof top had a great vibe and great view. The hotel is in a great area, you can walk to a lot of places and the Metro is right outside. Now to the cons, the hotel rooms were extremely warm, and the A/C wasn’t working. They must have it set to winter mode. We needed to open the windows to get some cool air during the night but now we were subjected to all the outside noise. Also, the walls are very thin, you can hear people rolling their luggage and kids running in the hallway. We are not light sleepers, and this kept us up all night. Unfortunately, I wanted to love this hotel but the room situation was just too much for us to return.

Hotel's Favourite
We flew into Terminal 4 at Madrid airport as we flew with Iberia. The queues for passport control took about an hour. We then had to get a train (that was a first) to the baggage reclaim. The train runs every couple of minutes and the journey was 5 minutes. That took us to Terminal 3. The baggage reclaim was in two parts and it took us a while to locate our belt. Ours were the only cases left on our conveyor which surprised me because we hadn’t done anything different to others on our flight. We usually fly in with Ryanair or EasyJet which is a lot more simple. A taxi from the airport to Gran Via is a fixed fee of 30 euros. It takes about 20 minutes. This hotel is absolutely fantastic. Check was busy but quick. The receptionist knew we were there for the kids to see Harry Styles. She was very friendly. The lift service is brilliant. You scan your key card and it gives you a number of floors to choose, ie your room floor, breakfast, pool or rooftop bar. It then tells you which lift to get in. This stops people randomly walking around the hotel. Also it must be the quickest way to get a lift in such a large hotel. The pool area was great. It’s not massive but then people don’t really go to Madrid to sit by the pool. The water was cool which was great to cool off in the roasting temperatures. We always got a bed by the pool which surprised me. There are about 40 beds by the pool but another loads of beds adjacent in the non pool area on the opposite side. People didn’t stay too long so free beds always came available. It can get windy on the 21st floor. Bring towel pegs as the towels can blow off. They supply as many pool towels as you need and drinks are served to your sunbed. Keep hold of your drinks though as they can blow over too. We always got seated in the 360 rooftop bar. You showed your room card and told them how many people were in your group and they found you a table/seat. Sometimes we had to wait a couple of minutes but the staff were very efficient. There was always a queue on the stairs for people outside the hotel who had to pay to enter. Hotel guests always took priority over these people. A gin & lemonade was 12 euros. A sangria was 9 euros. The views are incredible. There was a nice mix of young and old people so it wasn’t full of pretentious people which was unexpected. There was often a queue to take your picture on the glass box. There is a sign saying you have a 2 minute maximum which is plenty of time. Most people took a lot less time but there’s always that one person taking far too many repetitive photographs. I was in room 716 which had a view of a wall. Not ideal but didn’t spoil are stay. But my daughter in room 718 had a nice view of the city. The rooms are nice & modern with a huge walk in shower. The breakfast was amazing. Probably the best choice of food I have ever seen. We were always seated really quickly. I will definitely return to this hotel. I couldn’t find any faults with it.

Great location, comfortable room, magnificent views, wonderful breakfast and, above all, the most amazing staff. We are regular visitors to Madrid and have stayed in many hotels. The RIU Plaza de España is by far the best that we have visited and will be our base for all future visits. You can even see the view from each room and choose your room accordingly as you book. A fantastic stay thanks in no small part to the staff.

The rooms thermostats are useless when the master system is in “winter mode”. You are forced to open the windows and deal with the street noise and lights or endure 75 degrees room temperature. Make sure to find out the temperature mode in use before venturing to stay in this hotel, because they obviously don’t believe in personal choice.

Visited the Riu Plaza on business, so only stayed overnight. I was really impressed. The hotel has the best of all locations on Madrid's Plaza España on the Gran Vía. The marble Lobby is grand and the bedroom was clean and modern. The Sky bar was buzzing and as well as amazing views was a great experience. Breakfast was top standard too Only place I would stay in Madrid.

A great place to stay and perfectly located to walk to the sits of Madrid or use the Metro. The staff were great on Reception and the rooftop bar was a great place to enjoy the evening sunset and panoramic views over the city. Rooms were very clean and well equipped. Breakfasts wee extremely good and the range of food varied (including champagne for breakfast!)

My wife and I spent a week here in March. Usually after two or three days in a hotel, I've found something wrong that makes me want to move on. Not the case here. Location, room, breakfast, bed, amenities all were excellent. The staff, bellmen, restaurant help all great, well trained, and friendly. The wonderful Plaza de Espana across the street was the cherry on top. Won't even look for another hotel in Madrid next trip.

The hotel was in an excellent location. All the staff at every level were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was on point. Plus side the weather was unseasonably warm downside was the air con is not programmed to be cool in March. Despite trying to keep the windows open the room was very warm. This was the only minor thing

This is a great hotel, in a very central location, excellent breakfast and lovely modern rooms. Only three very minor irritations: 1. one of the bathroom lights is motion sensor and you can’t turn it off manually. If you need to use the bathroom at night, this light automatically goes on when you enter the bathroom. This wouldn’t be a problem except the bathroom door is glass which means you wake any other people sharing the bedroom with you as the light is sufficiently bright to light up the bedroom. Not sure why this light can’t be switched off? 2. It was unseasonably warm the weekend we were there -25 degrees. The aircon in the bedroom is “locked” off in the winter months so we had to sleep with the bedroom window open as the room was so warm. We had a great view from our room over the Plaza de España but it is very noisy at night so ideally we would have shut the window and used the aircon had it been available. 3. The hotel appears to have a fantastic roof terrace with pool but this is understandably closed in the winter. However given how warm it was the weekend we were there it would have been wonderful to be able to use the terrace (not the pool) to relax in the sunshine. It’s a pity the terrace couldn’t have been made available given how warm it was. However these are all minor points and I would definitely recommend this hotel.
