We stayed at the Sofitel Plaza Espana for 3 nights in early June. Our room had a king size bed which was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in ! Our room faced the inside courtyard which was great since it allowed for a really dark room in the morning and a good sleep-in (we...

We booked the Sofitel through Expedia. No problems with the booking. They were expecting us when we turned up. Nice lobby. Comfortable seating. Our room was on the 1st floor. Decent size, soft comfortable bed. Far too many pillows. We requested non-feather pillows upon arrival at the hotel but this could not be provided. No noise pollution at all. The...

The Sofitel Madrid Plaza de Espana is in a very nice location (two blocks from the Ventura Rodriguez metro), the staff is extraordinarily friendly and patient (especially since I don't speak Spanish very well), and the beds were very comfortable. If possible, I would recommend requesting a room with a balcony; it really enhances the hotel experience. Although the regular...

Booked this through AUCTIONAIR, the charity auction site. It took some finding, and is down a small side street, which is not the most salubrious area. The hotel was lovely, quaint but very smart, comfortable room, and nice touches, like fruit in the room etc. However, we did not manage to eat dinner in the restaurant, because it never seemed...

Stayed for three days in early March on business. It did seem to be a more expensive than I thought it was worth, but I don't know if that's true in general for Madrid. The location was very convenient. It's right next to several restaurants, including a pub, a good kebab place and a VIPS (restaurant/ convenience store). The room...

The Sofitel Plaza de Espana is well located but not worth the price you pay for it. Rooms are tatty and old fashioned. I have stayed in a number of Sofitel hotels in the past. This one is one of the worth.

We stayed in this hotel end of December 2006. The hotel is very nice, staff is friendly. However on the 31st December the hotel bar was closed at 10pm, no room service either. I was very disappointed. I recommend this hotel but not on the 31st of December.

I have stayed at this hotel four or five times and will return. The first time, I got a room through priceline and had never heard of it before. It has an excellent location, but is down a small street so is not noisy. The staff are always friendly, and the rooms are very nice. The Deluxe Rooms with an...

Stayed 1 night prior to a flight out. Hotel was clean, room was clean and staff was nice. Bed was comfortable. The bathroom paint and plaster was peeling. Nice size room. Common areas very nicely decorated and clean. Not to sure about the Plaza Espana...a little seedy looking therefore did not explore the area much...prefer the area around the Prado....

We fancied going a bit up-market while on a Motorbike holiday in Spain, and stumbled across the Sofitel. We paid a walk in rate of €171 which they said was a promotion, although I did find out later we probably could have got it on the net for €50 less. The receptionist was very pleasant and professional, and my bargaining...

Staying in Arguelles

Neighbourhood Profile
Arguelles
Just south of the sprawling campus of the Complutense University of Madrid, Arguelles exudes a fast-paced, collegiate vibe. The main street, Calle Princesa, is filled with twenty-somethings rushing between classes and errands, meeting up with classmates, and grabbing cheap beers and cheap eats. This is a prime shopping spot where the major Spanish clothing and department store chains are less busy than their downtown counterparts, and there is an array of casual dining options to choose from. Check out nearby outdoor spaces such as the lushly planted Plaza de España to the south, which is often filled with craft stalls. To the west of Arguelles is the giant Parque Oueste, a calm and picturesque park with its own Egyptian temple.
