excellent location - very central. we had a room facing the street which was very noisy at night as we had to leave the window open for air as the room was stuffy and the a/c was not working!! also dreaful smell of sewerage in the bathroom. on arrival the porter was extremely friendly and very helpful when we asked...

Got a great rate compared to comparable 4 stars in the area. This hotel is an easy walk from the Ventura Rodriguez metro station and a 5 minute walk from the Plaza de Espana. The area is not sketchy as another poster said, it's quiet at night as there is not a whole lot of activity in the area immediately...

We stayed at the Sofitel Madrid Plaza de Espana for two nights in December 2007. It was the first time for both of us in Madrid and we were pleased with the easy access to the Sofitel. The immediate environment leaves a little bit to be desired but Gran Via and the metro are both in close walking distance. There...

This was a good hotel and the only reason I have marked it down is because of the noise and the staff. The front desk was chaotic and when I asked for a taxi it took nearly twenty minutes to get one, as the memeber of staff was constanly interupted by other guests as he was the only one on...

We stayed at the Sofitel Plaza Espana for 3 nights in early June. Our room had a king size bed which was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in ! Our room faced the inside courtyard which was great since it allowed for a really dark room in the morning and a good sleep-in (we...

We booked the Sofitel through Expedia. No problems with the booking. They were expecting us when we turned up. Nice lobby. Comfortable seating. Our room was on the 1st floor. Decent size, soft comfortable bed. Far too many pillows. We requested non-feather pillows upon arrival at the hotel but this could not be provided. No noise pollution at all. The...

The Sofitel Madrid Plaza de Espana is in a very nice location (two blocks from the Ventura Rodriguez metro), the staff is extraordinarily friendly and patient (especially since I don't speak Spanish very well), and the beds were very comfortable. If possible, I would recommend requesting a room with a balcony; it really enhances the hotel experience. Although the regular...

Booked this through AUCTIONAIR, the charity auction site. It took some finding, and is down a small side street, which is not the most salubrious area. The hotel was lovely, quaint but very smart, comfortable room, and nice touches, like fruit in the room etc. However, we did not manage to eat dinner in the restaurant, because it never seemed...

Stayed for three days in early March on business. It did seem to be a more expensive than I thought it was worth, but I don't know if that's true in general for Madrid. The location was very convenient. It's right next to several restaurants, including a pub, a good kebab place and a VIPS (restaurant/ convenience store). The room...

Staying in Arguelles

Neighbourhood Profile
Just south of the sprawling campus of the Complutense University of Madrid, Arguelles exudes a fast-paced, collegiate vibe. The main street, Calle Princesa, is filled with twenty-somethings rushing between classes and errands, meeting up with classmates, and grabbing cheap beers and cheap eats. This is a prime shopping spot where the major Spanish clothing and department store chains are less busy than their downtown counterparts, and there is an array of casual dining options to choose from. Check out nearby outdoor spaces such as the lushly planted Plaza de España to the south, which is often filled with craft stalls. To the west of Arguelles is the giant Parque Oueste, a calm and picturesque park with its own Egyptian temple.
