We stayed at intur palacio San Martin for almost a week. The room was very clean and comfortable (although we didn't have a view to the plaza), but mainly the location was perfect: close to everything in central Madrid. Also, the hotel restaurant is a nice place to sit and have a drink in, located in the plaza itself. Not...

We stayed here for two nights. It's a beautiful hotel right in the heart of historic Madrid. Our room looked out on the square. Perfect location to walk everywhere. Delicious breakfast. We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Madrid!

great location, near both Opera and Callao metro stations. The hotel was older but had lots of charm. The room was large and clean. Not enough electrical outlets but that seems typical of Europe. Plenty of hot water. The Wi-Fi was free and fast. The beds were a little hard and our view outside the window was into the center...

Just returned from a five night stay in Intur Palacio San Martin. The hotel is a very central hotel close to all major sight sightseeing spots. Walking distance from the Royal Palace Gran Via and Retiro Park. The hotel was in a very quite area close to a supermarket and many places to eat. The hotel was a very clean...

Our room (202) was right on a pedestrian path leading to Gran Via with cafes just below and nearby. And, it was absolutely quiet at night. No noise disturbed our sleep. It's closest to the Metro stop for Callao but the Metro stop Sol is also close and has many more connections. Several streets with shops and cafes are close...

Location location location. Close to all the important places, but yet located in a small quite plaza. Our double room was wide, bed was very wide and comfortable, clean room. The front desk guys were AMAZING!! Always willing to help, welcoming and smiling. Will definitely recommend this hotel.

The good: very well located in terms of transportation and walking distance to major attractions, and quiet (that's important in Madrid); clean room (but they should just get rid of that nasty, unwashed bed cover) and friendly, helpful staff. The not-so-good: restaurant food quality varies greatly depending upon what you order - stick to the simple stuff; breakfast buffet is...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
