We were disappointed last time we stayed at our usual Madrid hotel and had noticed the Pension Jaen as we walked round the area. We read the Trip Advisor reviews and booked online. We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and cleanliness of the entrance hall of the building and more so to discover that there was a well...

Great location positioned in a great place to explore the museums of Madrid. Lots of places to eat nearby and man very nice and tried to be helpful although no English spoken, ensure you go prepared with some form of translator. Basic but clean small room. My only problem was that there is no sign on the exterior of the...

This pension in a private home is well run and clean. It is in a great location close to the Prado, Atocha Station and many of the main attractions of Madrid. It is also in quite a historic location. We stayed for four nights and were very comfortable. It helps to be able to speak Spanish a little better than...

The room is clean, value for money, location is great, friendly staff. Tiny minus point is the owner cant speak E but still worth 5 stars. Dont worry about the shared toilet, it's clean and comfortable, 3 rooms share one. We came early, about 2 hours before check in time but the owner still let us have our room cause...

The place is nice and clean. The owners are awesome, nice, and super helpful. I personally less into hostel in private houses - to me it feels weird and uncomfortable to invade people's privacy, but to those who are it's a great place.

When I was choosing this pension, the mix of location/price won me over. It's in the heart of Madrid, minutes away from Prado museum, located on Cervantes street. No breakfast, but believe me nothing is better than going to a nearby cafe on Leon street and have a nice breakfast with Spaniards having their coffee before leaving for work. I...

The hotel is fantasic for more reasons than one. The location is good the air conditioned rooms are clean and homely with a fantastic helpfull service making our weekend break truly relaxing. The location is fantastic being just a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of madrid with local markets walking distance allowing you an insight in to the...

I stayed three nights at this hostel in the end of November 2014. Very good location. My room was not huge but it was enough for one person. Room was cozy and clean, housekeeping every day. Also air condition but it was not working during the winter time. Own bathroom, wifi, french balcony, a view to the inner yard. During...

I was told that anything that sounded that good in that area was a joke. Well, the joke was on the other person. It is that good. The staff is so accommodating with arrival times, storing things for us between Madrid and Marrakech, that not speaking Spanish was not a problem. Their website was not working properly, so I had...

Staff was really friendly and flexible! Location was good, really close to the Prado Museum and Parque del Retiro, and a short walk to Plaza Mayor. The neighbourhood was lovely, with narrow streets full of bars and cafés. The only thing I'd point out is that the walls are paper thin, so if you're after privacy it's not the right...

Staying in Huertas

Neighbourhood Profile
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
