The location immersed in the expanses of Matera is suggestive and characteristic. In fact, the environments carved into the Lucanian stone make the moment intimate and familiar.
The staff is very very courteous and helpful.
The dishes have a refined appearance and sensory taste.
Comprehensive menus were served for lactose intolerant guests that perfectly reflected the dishes of other guests thus avoiding the embarrassment of diversity.
A constructive criticism: slow down the service because a menu of various appetizers, two first courses, a second course, fruit and dessert cannot be served in less than 3 hours.
Overall Rating really satisfactory
A special note deserves the organizational staff, and in particular Luciano, a person who transmits in his profession all the best human qualities. Congratulations, I hope to return to you soon
Excellent presentation and quality of dishes prepared by an extraordinary chef.
We felt pampered at all times of the evening.
We recommend it without any reservation.
WONDERFUL place (and that's an understatement!), cozy rooms, clean, with attention to detail and small pampering.
For the duration of the stay I felt like living in the dream.
A special thought goes to the staff! Very professional people, which makes the service impeccable, but above all, and I want to emphasize this, an out of the ordinary kindness.
From a service, especially in important events, you expect professionalism, but not necessarily a smile... well, here the "package" was really complete, because during every moment of the festivities I met wonderful smiles and kind eyes.
I thank our friends for sharing this unique moment with us, but my special thanks goes, from the heart, to all the staff who, with the great and exceptional work done, has certainly made a difference.
I close with a phrase from St Francis that I dedicate to the staff:
"He who works with his hands is a worker, he who works with his hands and head is a craftsman, he who works with his hands, head and heart is an artist."
Thank you very much
To sum up our overall impression, it is one of missed opportunities.
Let me start with some important location comments:
- the location is great for visiting Matera
- the site has been beautifully restored and overall provides a nice calm environment in which to relax
Big concerns:
- Safety: we stayed in the suite padronale. While appreciating the desire to maintain original features (in this case a very worn stone staircase), this should never be a compromise for safety. While climbing the staircase in the first five minutes, my 8 year old fell down. More on that later. One could argue that the staircase is not fit for children, whatever their age. But later on I also fell down the stairs when coming down, thankfully holding the handrail, since I was 6 months pregnant at the time of the visit. It should be possible to at least make the staircase less slippery, if not change its slope. This is plainly dangerous for grownups and children alike.
- Staff competence: it feels like they need training, not only in English with Matera coming up as European cultural capital, but also to make a more professional impression. Examples include widespread staff confusion over ID and contact details and not even an offer to help take our luggage to the room on the aforementioned staircase. The level of service does not square with the luxury aspiration the hotel has.
- Overall amenities: at a hotel of this category, I would expect basic hotel amenities like a hotel manual in the room, wifi (which had been confirmed as part of our booking but of which there was none), complimentary water in the room, towels near the pool. Again, a lot of room for improvement.
- Peaceful enjoyment: we chose a more remote resort like this one to relax. Our rest was thoroughly disrupted during our second night, when the Masseria hosted a private birthday party. With children screaming and playing outside till the small hours and a disco, I would recommend checking whether there will be any parties during your stay, as they do not go well together.
Overall, given the positioning of the venue (which clearly aspires to luxury, also reflected in the price), we left disappointed and won't be recommending it anytime soon.
I sincerely hope that these were teething problems, my only regret is that we were the ones who ended up paying for them.
Do not expect this to be in, or near, the centre of town. If you don’t have a vehicle, don’t stay here.
But the rooms are beautiful, the staff very helpful and the pool and surrounds gorgeous.
The peace and quiet at night are quite wonderful. The view is spectacular and the ambience of the hotel excellent.
As long as you are driving, highly recommended.
Complaints? They should ditch the "resort fee" and just increase the room price by $10 - seems a little cheesy to charge a separate fee to use the pool. Put a garbage pail in the bedroom near the coffee maker - both minor issues - really enjoyed my stay there. Great place to come back to after a day of sightseeing.
