We had long wanted to go and see this city which became a UNESCO heritage site in 1993. Completely by chance we booked this hotel, struck by the location (among the rocks of Matera) and by the very particular photos in detail. The very friendly and helpful staff, as soon as we arrived they welcomed us with two glasses of wine (very good) produced directly by them, they accompanied us to our room and provided us with all the information to take advantage of the little time available to enjoy the beauties of the Sassi of Matera. The room was beautiful, set in the rocks, equipped with every comfort and very clean, not to mention the breakfast in the morning, where in a setting from times gone by we enjoyed the delicacies of Basilicata. You cannot go to Matera and not stay at the Palazzotto. Thanks to all the hotel staff and to nature who "gave life" to the creation of an open-air wonder.

A hotel to remember. An architectural highlight with style and aesthetics. The great rooms (we had room 5) are rounded off by an authentic and exceptional breakfast in great quality. As a welcome there was a glass of Spumante or optionally wine. If you have always wanted to stay in a Sassi, this is the place. The location is fantastic and Matera is great to explore from there. Only privacy is restricted, so the toilet in our room had no door or similar. The associated restaurant, unfortunately had rest day, but is certainly better than many others in this place. We would definitely come back to this place, a very clear Recommendation!

This small hotel (about ten rooms) is well located because a taxi can drop us off very close and it is quite central, allowing to visit on foot the whole of Matera. A room in a cave! Very clean, well appointed, even if the shower is small. The welcome is very warm, breakfast of a good standard. Of course the price is a luxury hotel and you have to book well in advance.

Absolutely beautiful place and service both very professional and very kind.
The cave suites (about ten) are carved into the rock and furnished with great taste. The breakfast dining room is also quite spectacular. A rather unique experience to live at any Award. In the heart of Lateran the establishment allows you to easily discover this sublime village. In short, we were won over.

We spent 2 nights in Matera which was just right, we were in room 4 which was large and very spacious. The bathroom is really all open plan with a small wall to offer privacy when using the toilet but the shower is on full view. We've been married 20 odd years so we were ok with this but I know some people may not be. We had no issues with our room (as some reviews have mentioned) and it was great to sleep in a cave.

The outside space is great for having a cool Aperol Spritz in the afternoon when the heat made being a tourist exhausting. It reached 37 deg when we were there.

Breakfast was nice, not a huge choice but you won't go hungry.

The location is great, walking distance of everywhere, we parked at Damasco parking and they drove us to the hotel, all very seamless.

Matera is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited, when you first see the city it takes your breath away. I booked La Nicchia Nel Sasso for dinner, the views are fantastic and the food superb. A lot of places use the menu via an app accessed via your phone (note the app does not have English so the waiter had to explain most items to us) but this aside it was worth it, we had a truly lovely evening.

I can also recommend the Tuk Tuk tours, great when the weather is so hot plus they can drop at the Duomo at the highest point so everything thereafter is downhill. Our guide was very informative and a pleasant way to explore. You can book in advance or the hotel can arrange but timeslots maybe limited by not booking in advance.

Absolutely loved our stay here and would recommend the hotel and place itself.

Happy exploring!

The cave room was truly romantic and very clean. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very spacious and very detailed in the cave. With seating area at the entrace with a TV. We also had a coffee machine and fridge and wine with glasses. The bathroom rain forest shower was amazing. Matera is an amazing must see town. Would stay more than just a night maybe 2. We parked our car outside the city and had a shuttle private transfer to thw hotel which the hotel recommended. This was truly woth it. The lights in the room was romantic and the breakfast was like a big family sitting together. It's a must stay when you go to Matera. People mentioned it has a cave like smell and damp. We did not fell that at all. Staff was frendly and recommended places to see. The city looks also so lovely at night time with all the lights. The hotel.is in the heart of the city and if we came back this place would see us again.

We booked a Delux room, 48 hours before our arrival. We parked just outside Matera using a company the property recommended and we’re then driven to the Accomodation and met by the staff, who took our bags to our top
,whilst we were treated to an espresso on arrival.

The room was huge , and the pictures simply do not do it justice. It literally takes your breath away. There was a bottle of Prosecco waiting in the room for us.

The location is perfect (a 5 min minute walk from the main piazza and only 3 minutes from the reservation we made For our first night at La Nicchia bel Sasso (amazing food).

The breakfast room/cave is equally impressive with a large selection of breakfast options and the staff we again attentive.

There is a large terrace outside the property where I am currently sat typing this review enjoying a bottle of vino bianco recommended enjoying the stunning view.

Without questions one of the best hotels and experiences I have ever had.

Highly recommend and would definitely return and stay here. (We are moving to Ostuni next but could happily stay here for another week)

Perfect location, new structure and tastefully decorated! We stayed in room 4 which might raise some privacy issue because the bathroom has no walls but it did not bother us particularly. Magnificent reception of the staff! Fantastic breakfast in a common room with a unique atmosphere. Small tip I would suggest healthier breakfast options with more varieties of fruit and jams or granola instead of industrial cereals. For me the most beautiful place to stay in Matera!

We stayed for one night while we were exploring Matera. The room was exceptionally cosy and had a special atmosphere (stone walls, warm lighting, clean, great view). The breakfast is absolutely amazing and you will enjoy it in a very atmospheric cave. The managers are very kind and helpful. Definitely five stars!

Matera is undoubtedly expensive and is likely to get more so. I found the pictures deceiving for this property but it is not dis-similar to other cave accommodation. We had room 8 which was not actually within a cave which I thought I had booked. It was actually above the cave. The room had 3 balconies which gave a great view over Matera. This did have is downside since the was quite a lot of noise from the laneways. The room was also buffered by the wind quite a lot. The room was quite small and the bathroom consisted of a shower and toilet - the sink was within the room. This is suitable for couples and not friends. The breakfast was simple and we found a little inadequate. The room also had a 'damp' quality about it but our tour guide advised us this tends to be the case in these properties. There are plenty of newer properties being established due to the growth in popularity. The location was great. Matera is on a hill so lots of step. We did find it a little hard to find but if you follow the GPS coordinates provided and then leave the car in the car-park near the toilet then look to the left (up the stairs) you will find the entrance. There is no 24 hour reception.
