+ location: on a popular walking tour route (but not noisy) which shows you are within walking distance of key sites
+ room: beautifully finished, clean, outstanding terrace
- breakfast: the spread is lovely, very tasty treats and fruit, but if you prefer cooked food (like eggs) it is extra (I believe 6 eur). This wasn’t a problem for us for eggs cooked to order
Tip:
+ get the room with the terrace: the views are spectacular
+ ask reception about extras: we booked the aperitivo on the terrace and in-room massages which were wonderful
+ bring comfy shoes: Matera is hilly and slippery!
+ tour: Matera has an exceptional history so I found a tour very worthwhile
P.s. I stayed in a 5* hotel in Matera last year but didn’t return due to the service. I would however, recommend and return to this hotel!
Also, quite easy to reach from the Piazza Duomo. I really liked that staff came to collect luggage from the drop-off point in Piazza Duomo and also carrie the luggage there when we left.
Breakfast was very good and staff very helpful and customer oriented.
Matera is an amazing place with a fascinating history. The hotel itself is charming and, though modern in terms of facilities and comfort, manages to maintain the character of its surroundings. The staff were great, spoke enough English to overcome our poor Italian, and made us feel special.
We had dinner in the hotels' beautiful Alcova restaurant which, like our suite, incorporates the caves for which Matera is famous. Food was a sophisticated take on local cuisine.
We ate a wonderful breakfast of croissants, meats, cheeses, yoghurt, and sweet treats on a balcony overlooking the ancient town and the canyon carved out by the Gravina River.
If you get the chance to stay here, we recommend it.
The room, equipped with a very spacious jacuzzi, was equipped with all the comforts expected. The sore point, however, was the hydromassage tub which unfortunately did not have an adequate temperature (the water was cold) and the hydromassage was only partially functional. The sink mixer also did not allow cold water to come out. To our grievances in this regard,
There was no resolution of the problem, much less an apology from the staff.
There is certainly room for improvement in the service and attention towards the guest that a structure like this must always guarantee. The only one to demonstrate it was the girl present during breakfast: friendly, nice and professional.
The location in the stones is also excellent and allows you to move to all the main destinations in a very short time.
In short, Matera is a charm and palace of the Duke as well!
"Confirm parking arrangements before you arrive at the hotel by car. It is impossible to park by the hotel."Read full review
"There is an indoor municipal parking lot about 600 metres from the main square at 10 euros per day. This is the best option."Read full review
"A lot of walking in Matera, will be a challenge with low mobility. If travelling of season the rain makes the floor very slippy!"Read full review
"Some rooms have a standalone tub and others a spa - so worthwhile. The staff will set up a walking tour of the Sassi - very well done. "Read full review
"Ok, I only gave sleep quality 4 out of 5 because the jacuzzi was quite noisy on the first night and we didn't know how to switch it off."Read full review
