+ staff: wow! The reception team (especially Erika) and the breakfast lady in particular were outstanding, they could not have been better!
+ location: on a popular walking tour route (but not noisy) which shows you are within walking distance of key sites
+ room: beautifully finished, clean, outstanding terrace

- breakfast: the spread is lovely, very tasty treats and fruit, but if you prefer cooked food (like eggs) it is extra (I believe 6 eur). This wasn’t a problem for us for eggs cooked to order

Tip:
+ get the room with the terrace: the views are spectacular
+ ask reception about extras: we booked the aperitivo on the terrace and in-room massages which were wonderful
+ bring comfy shoes: Matera is hilly and slippery!
+ tour: Matera has an exceptional history so I found a tour very worthwhile

P.s. I stayed in a 5* hotel in Matera last year but didn’t return due to the service. I would however, recommend and return to this hotel!

My family did not actually stay at this hotel but while we were visiting Matera we stopped in to share a bottle of wine and take in the view from the hotels outdoor seating. While we were there the lady running the front desk talked to us about the hotel and the history of the rooms and even showed us around. Her name is Giovanna and she was so friendly and kind. We enjoyed speaking to her and the information she gave us. We enjoyed the hotel and her company so much we even went back the next morning for a coffee and to say goodbye to her as we were leaving. Hopefully one day we will get to visit Matera again and stay at this beautiful hotel. I encourage everyone to stay here as I was very impressed by the rooms, dinning area and the staff are so welcoming and friendly. Thank you Giovanna for your hospitality and time, we really enjoyed are time with you!

Amazing place and amazing experience. The restaurant for having breakfast is surreal as it is located within a cave. The room was large and had its appeal, being in a cave. One thing to be on the lookout, there is no bathroom door, just a curtain, but it did not spoil the appeal of the place.

Also, quite easy to reach from the Piazza Duomo. I really liked that staff came to collect luggage from the drop-off point in Piazza Duomo and also carrie the luggage there when we left.

Breakfast was very good and staff very helpful and customer oriented.

We had the room 104 ; we had some issues there and the staff did not help so be aware that: AC does not work ; we informed twice the receptionists and the only solution they offered was to remove the cover of the AC machine (see the photo). It was 25 degrees C in the room day and night ; impossible to sleep well; also, the minibar was out of order ; it is only decorative ; the room is very small: With 2 luggages, you can’t move around the room; The room is located in front of a house where there is a dog who is barking all night long ; We paid 20 euros per day for car park; When the hotel car park partner dropped off us at the Duomo, nobody from the hotel came to us to help bringing our luggages down to the hotel (about 100 slippery steps...); The only thing we liked was the decoration of the room, the hotel location near the Duomo, and the breakfast served in a pleasant cave; Staff was not helpful when we shared the issues we encountered (except the blonde lady at the breakfast who was very nice). Bad experience overall.

Matera is a unique place with a singular and captivating history, showing the human capacity to model the surrounding environment. Palazzo del Duca is a contemporary example of this capacity, combining the simplicity of a sassi cave with modern luxury. We spent a couple of regenerating days in an amazing suite, staff was very helpful and kind, hotel is behind the Duomo just few stair steps. I definitely recommend.

We only had one night here and wished we could have stayed longer; a unique and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Matera is an amazing place with a fascinating history. The hotel itself is charming and, though modern in terms of facilities and comfort, manages to maintain the character of its surroundings. The staff were great, spoke enough English to overcome our poor Italian, and made us feel special.
We had dinner in the hotels' beautiful Alcova restaurant which, like our suite, incorporates the caves for which Matera is famous. Food was a sophisticated take on local cuisine.
We ate a wonderful breakfast of croissants, meats, cheeses, yoghurt, and sweet treats on a balcony overlooking the ancient town and the canyon carved out by the Gravina River.
If you get the chance to stay here, we recommend it.

Stayed in junior suite 102 for 3 nights. Hotel arranged parking and shuttle at extra cost. Spatious room, great shower. Very good bed and perfect wifi in the room. Missed a comfortable relax seat though, only chairs available. Breakfast in Covid time was a small personal buffet on each table of very good quality. Friendly and helpfull staff speaks only a bit of english. No wifi in breakfast grotto is a pity for travellers alone. My table was to small to put a book next to me.

Location worthy of note because it is located in a corner of rocky paradise... our room, minimal, but with great character and energy that comes from the stone and above all from the internal swimming pool (no presence of humidity because the extraction and ventilation is excellent).. .the rooms are not communicating with the restaurant and reception, but you can get there with a few steps. The restaurant is also located in a cave where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served.. a perfect breakfast for lovers of savory and sweet dishes with all local products or made on site. For two evenings we had dinner there and I must say that they are super helpful, even if on the second dinner I had to complain about some dishes (a complaint also made known to the sommelier), very helpful, polite and youthful staff... also take advantage of the car park and being accompanied by the shuttle... (no worries because from there you can do everything on foot) the key ring for the rooms is nice😅...definitely the destination of my next trip to Matera... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The structure, in the historic center of Matera, a few steps from the cathedral, is certainly one of a kind as it is largely set in the rock.
The room, equipped with a very spacious jacuzzi, was equipped with all the comforts expected. The sore point, however, was the hydromassage tub which unfortunately did not have an adequate temperature (the water was cold) and the hydromassage was only partially functional. The sink mixer also did not allow cold water to come out. To our grievances in this regard,
There was no resolution of the problem, much less an apology from the staff.
There is certainly room for improvement in the service and attention towards the guest that a structure like this must always guarantee. The only one to demonstrate it was the girl present during breakfast: friendly, nice and professional.

We stayed three days at the Duke's palace and everything was perfect. The structure is beautiful and well-kept, incorporates some typical caves in one of which is located the excellent restaurant where breakfast is also served, equally excellent, with typical quality products. The staff is extremely polite and professional and the rooms, we had a deluxe junior suite, gorgeous. Spacious, with all comforts, comfortable bed, super large bath and separate shower, fridge with water and soft drinks available, nice and particular furniture.
The location in the stones is also excellent and allows you to move to all the main destinations in a very short time.
In short, Matera is a charm and palace of the Duke as well!

We are in a restricted traffic zone. If you reach us by car, you can decide to use our garage with shuttle service to Piazza Duomo, or to park freely outside the old city.
