About our room:
We booked the suite with the hot tub, and it was so spacious. It had everything we needed, including snacks and water for purchase. The area with the hot tub even had candles ready for a romantic night. The suite was located in a cave (grotta) that was equipped with HVAC to ensure the humidity stayed low in our suite.
About the service staff:
I can't overstate how accommodating and welcoming the staff treated us during our short stay. I can recall the name of the lady who helped us (she did mention she was originally from Albania), but she was so nice and gave us a tour of our room and even had a bottle of white wine (a gift from the hotel) chilled in the fridge for us. She also gave us recommendations for places to visit in Matera, booked our dinner reservations, and helped us book a taxi. There were a couple of other people that we interacted with who were also very nice and helpful. I believe they might have been the owners. During our checkout, we received a gift with local bread from the owners :).
About the ammenities we used:
The breakfast that was included with our stay was delicious. My husband loved the apple cake. I loved everything I tried, but I would agree that the apple cake was my favorite as well.
After 13 days in Italy, we needed to do laundry and had quite a bit of clothes to wash. Again, the receptionist helped us book a laundry service. It was about 20 euros and it was completed in a few hours.
About the location:
Thymus is centraly located within walking distance to many restaurants and attractions. One perk about the location is that it's only a few short steps uphill once you were in the Sassi. We took the shuttle from Bari aiport, and it dropped us off at Piazza Matteotte. We decided to walk to our hotel, which was about a 15-minute walk with two suitcases. The part that was rough was going down the steps to go into the Sassi. But it was manageable. After that, it was mostly flat or with few steps. You can book a taxi if you would rather not deal with taking your luggage in, not a very smooth pavement.
We loved our stay so much that we would love to come back, maybe during our 2 year anniversary :).

Firstly, a tip about transport to/from Matera: there are no Trenitalia train services. The company that provides a train service to/from Bari is a private company and its station is known as Matera Centrale, about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. You can book transport on the Trenitalia website, but it's not a train service but a bus. I went as far as Salerno by bus (a little under three hours) and from there by train to Naples (about 35 minutes). The bus stop at the moment for that Trenitalia service is on Viale Nazioni Unite (about five minutes from Matera Centrale), but that's apparently only temporary. If coming by another bus company (check services from both Bari and Bari airport and from other places such as Taranto), there are different bus stops in Matera. Therefore, when organising your travel to/from Matera, make sure that you check all the details.
Whichever way you get to Matera, to get to the hotel you can take a taxi as the hotel is just a few metres from one of the main roads (Via Fiorentini). By road here I mean a cobblestone street shared by pedestrians and cars. Otherwise, if walking, make your way to the main square (Piazza Vittorio Veneto) and beside Calzedonia (underwear shop) look for a set of stairs that goes down to the "sassi" and that will take you to Via Fiorentini. It is signposted, but not well. You can very easily miss it. Once you know the way, then it's easy (about a five-minute walk from there to the hotel), but I used Google Maps and got lost. It would be hard if you're using a wheeled suitcase as there are stairs and plenty of cobble stones.
My advice is that, once you get to the hotel, check where you are and take note of something distinctive as the neighbourhood looks all the same and, while signposted, the hotel is just a few metres off the main street. However, once you know, then it's easy and you'll never get lost again.
Anyhow, the hotel itself is very good. In my room I had most amenities, the wifi worked well, and there was a little fridge. The breakfast was very good with a wide selection of cold items that you can eat either inside (where the hotel reception is) or outside. The hotel is very well located right in the middle of the "sassi", so you feel as if you're in the right place, but it's quiet. You can easily walk to visit all the sites.
My visit to Matera was great. I would happily return to this hotel.

The girls at the reception are all extremely attentive and helpful.
They offered to book the tour, parking and even the restaurant for the evening. The room really has the wow effect. Large spaces with attention to the smallest detail.
Congratulations you made us feel pampered

...needn't have worried, this place is 100% worth it! I've been fortunate to stay in some truly amazing hotels around the world but the suite we had here was something else. Absolutely enormous space that had everything you would possibly want from a hotel room and then some. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud, bathrobes and slippers thrown in is always a lovely touch but the highlight of all of this is in the basement. Your own private spa. In a cave. Amazing.
It's possible you will find other hotels with rooms that are based in cave spaces. It's possible that you will find other hotel rooms with their own private spa areas. Finding somewhere as nice as this that does both? I'm not so sure. Not a cheap option but most definitely worth it. Would love to stay here again and certainly wouldn't even need to get as drunk as we did last time to book it!
Service before we arrived was excellent with great communications and they arranged the off site parking and pick up for us so that we didn’t have to find our own parking or make our own way with our cases.
The staff were very friendly but the service itself was a little lacking. Our arrival was a bit rushed with no real explanation of the facilities and likewise we were left to our own devices during breakfast. No real hardship as it wasn’t difficult to work out, but a bit more care would have been appreciated. Similarly, the room cleaning was mixed - no major faults but not quite perfect either. I am aware that we could have raised the issues at the time but I would have preferred that we were occasionally asked if everything was okay? as was the case at other hotels.
Interestingly, we thought that the restaurants we visited in Matera had a slightly complacent attitude towards tourists which may have been as a result of a long and busy season, and maybe some of that tired attitude was reflected in the hotel also?
All said, we would recommend Thymus and would stay again ourselves if we were to revisit Matera but wanted to review fairly in comparison to the other 3 hotels we stayed at on this trip to Italy.
