The Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa is often celebrated for its serene ambiance and distinctive cave setting. Nestled in the enchanting Sassi of Matera, the hotel's prime location is easily explored on foot. Reviewers are consistently impressed with the cleanliness and the luxurious spa amenities which enhance their stay.
While the rooms' unique design and comfort receive acclaim, a few guests note the need for better lighting and temperature control. We booked a last minute holiday here and had a comfortable and relaxing stay. We had booked a suite and on arrival were shown to a basement room which was a large and impressive cave. Unfortunately for us, some building works were being undertaken nearby so we were woken up at around 7am by loud continuous drilling. We complained to reception who were brilliant about it, contacting the builders to try to sort the issue out. As the building was going to continue for a few days the staff offered us a choice of 2 other suites. The one we ended up staying in was higher up and we weren’t disturbed by noise again.
The bathroom in our suite didn’t have a door but was behind a wall. However, if you’re ok with that the bathroom is well set out with a hairdryer, socket and toiletries. Towels are changed daily which is essential due to the humidity. Lighting is very low but the mirrors have lighting behind them so you can see to get ready. There were 2 open hanging areas in our room with about 7 hangers in each. There were open shelves for folded clothes but no drawers. There was a safe and coffee making facilities but no milk. We bought our own and stored it in the fridge/mini bar. Bottled drinking water is supplied daily at no extra charge.
Breakfast was an continental style buffet with a choice of cooked eggs. The coffee was very nice and the freshness and quality of the food was good. The staff were professional and friendly without being intrusive in any way.
We tried the spa once which was quite nice if a little on the small side & the pool only around 3/4 hydra-massage options. One visit to the spa per stay is often complimentary but that depends on who you book through, otherwise it’s €50, ( for an hour for 2 people - I think!). It’s worth asking.
A word of warning; we independently arranged a taxi from the airport to the hotel and because of regulations the driver had to drop us a 5 minute walk from the door but at a point that was a steep walk downhill which we had to pull our cases down. The streets are made of polished stone so are slippery even in the dry. It might be worth speaking to the hotel about booking a taxi or at least asking them to arrange for the taxi to drop you at the hotel reception as all it takes is a permit. We didn’t know this! The hotel staff arranged this for us when we were collected, thank goodness as it would have meant dragging our cases back up the hill!
Also, flat shoes are a must for this town.

My friend and I visited this place last December and the place was fantastic. The staff are very helpful. From arranging transport to and from the hotel, to the kitchen staff who keeps bringing us complimentary food "from the kitchen" when we had dinner there. The spa is also very good, very relaxing. I like the way the limit the number of people inside the spa, so you'll enjoy your experience and not crammed in.
Book your stay here, you wouldn't regret it.

Wow, what a treat it was to stay here during our time in Matera. The staff were exceptional in their hospitality, very helpful and kind - they went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We even got an upgrade on our room which was amazing!
So you know what to expect at this memorable hotel: it's a complex of cave buildings with reception, spa, breakfast and restaurant all in one building. The hotel's rooms/suites are individually dotted into the hillside as separate units - they are caves but luxurious ones.
Our room/suite was spotless and spacious with everything one could need including free WiFi. Breakfast was delicious with a good spread of food choices. The spa, both the facilities and treatments, were of exceptional standard. The location was prime in Sassi, a very short walk to some good restaurants and shops. Our room was conveniently located 3-4 min walk from Piazza Giovanni Pascoli, just down/up a few flights of stairs.
We would not hesitate to choose Aquatio to stay in on another visit to Matera!

The property was fantastic. It was authentic Matera setting with rooms scattered in different caves; however, all of the rooms were refurbished and beautiful. The property is also located in the heart of sites you will want to visit in Matera. Additionally, Matera streets were not easy to navigate - especially by car as I was traveling. The property was relatively easy to locate (by Matera standards) and parking was also easy. I dropped my car in front of the property and their valet took care of the rest, making my life A LOT easier. Thank you for your help making this a seamless experience.

This place is amazing, there is seriously not a single bad thing about it. From the friendly, intelligent and accomodating staff, to the spa, to the most gorgeous rooms. They have everything you might need, and can suggest and organize any activity. Martina is so great and can help you with anything. The breakfast is delicious and they are handling the COVID situation so well. The rooms hold the integrity of the sassi while still being the epitome of luxury. Could not recommend it enough, and matera was absolutely breathtaking.

I had the pleasure of staying in this wonderful property and enjoying the spa treatments.
It is necessary to understand how Matera was born to better perceive the effort in the creation of this location which, despite the concept of a scattered hotel, offers the maximum. I stayed in a superior deluxe, located in the main building, thus being able to use the SPA without having to go out.
The room is (obviously) a single environment, the care and refinement can be seen from many details. The bathroom has no doors but an elegant separation with all the comforts. The smell of damp is noticeable upon entering but the ventilation and air conditioning systems make it almost imperceptible.
The SPA is noteworthy as well as the treatments; we did both the route and the massages. It certainly requires careful maintenance,
given that not all the systems were working, the girls in charge of the massages showed themselves to be prepared and competent!

What an excellent and surprising experience. We had decided to visit Matera for a few days and picked this hotel from the Qantas hotel listing because of its location in the Sasso Caveoso section of this ancient town carved out of and built with limestone. The staff, the facilities, the breakfasts, the location, the room and the spa were all excellent.
We were upgraded to a mini suite which was superbly designed into the rock with a private entrance and very high end furniture. We later learned the hotel had earned architectural awards.
The staff were welcoming and helpful in proving advice on restaurants, tours and the sights of Matera.
The spa deserves special comment and our accommodation stay entitled us to an hour of use. Sauna, Turkish room, lay down beds and of course a large heated pool with multiple massage jets and water fountains provided a fantastic and relaxing experience.
Don’t miss this hotel. It’s excellent

The renovation within the caves is beautiful and high quality. The hotel is in historic district so a guest can not drive to it but they have a good system of parking in a garage a couple Km away and the hotel sends a taxi for you at a cost of 15€ each way plus 10€ a day for garage. The hotel is well located close to restaurants and major Matera sites. The only significant drawback is the bathroom in our suite (only one good size room but called a suite) has no door so it is open to the room…a real lack of privacy. There was also two steps down the bathroom, which at night can be interesting to navigate in the dark since there is no low lighting near the steps. The shower was outstanding. The staff was helpful and vey nice.

“We would like to take this opportunity to say how amazing our 3 night stay at the Aquatio Cave Hotel and Spa was last week and also to thank you for the wonderful service. It has been a little dream of ours to visit Matera for a few years and last week we finally realised it and made our dream come true. Matera is a gorgeous city, a very special place and what came across very strongly is how proud the people of Matera are of the city ,its history and their ancestry.
And to make our visit to Matera even more special was our stay at the Aquatio which is a simply amazing hotel and hugely impressive.
We would like to thank you for the brilliant service from our welcome from Pauola on reception who was so helpful and friendly to the porter taking our case to our room. From the brilliant service in the bar and breakfast room to the cleaning staff. We were very impressed with how often the cleaning staff attended to our room and promptly cleaned it,topped up the mini bar and replaced the towels and robes. It seemed that every time we went out the room was attended immediately and so our return to our room was always met with a nice welcome.
This was our first stay in a 5 star hotel and we absolutely loved it.The biggest surprise was discovering that we had been upgraded to a suite. There is so much more we can say about the Aquatio but all I will say for now is thank you so much for making our stay a great experience and as the holiday was in celebration of our wedding anniversary made it very special indeed.
We really hope to come back and visit you again one day but until that day comes we have some wonderful memories to reflect on in the meantime.”

We got a tip from the sister hotel Biancodonda in Gallipoli. There are real rooms in a cave (Sassi) but also rooms in stone houses spread over several floors. As we were travelling with a dog, the pure "cave rooms" (without a view) were not bookable. We therefore had the Deluxe Plus rooms with a terrace and a view of the cave churches and the gorge with the Sassis. Sensational. But you can experience the cave feeling in the common rooms, lounge areas and of course in the spa. There is a lift but it only covers two floors; in Matera, walking and climbing stairs is just part of the experience. The spa is sensational with a really large pool that was actually built into the mountain. Fantastic. A time slot (1 hour is free) must be booked in advance. We took the times on the morning of the day of departure and were almost alone. There is a sauna and steam bath and several loungers, and there is also an extensive range of massages. The breakfast room is small and the buffet a bit cramped but there is a good breakfast selection. There is also a restaurant, but we didn't use it. The Aquatico Cave Luxury Hotel is a recommended hotel for those who like the modern interpretation of the millennia-old cave tradition in Matera. If you are there by car, you will find inexpensive public spaces in Via Lucana (parking meters) and only a four-minute walk from the hotel or in various parking garages. It is safe everywhere. The staff are very friendly.

There is parking nearby and the hotel will park the car for you and provide a shuttle service return. No need to pre book!
Enjoy its wonderful there.
I would contact the hotel for the best information. I only know about my room and am not sure which type it was. Sorry!
