Detailed Reviews
Aque Cave really is an amazing place to stay in Matera. This small, boutique hotel, consisting of four beautifully appointed cave rooms/ suites is in an excellent location for exploring Matera, the garden/patio is a beautiful place to rest and gaze out over Matera and the breakfasts are delicious and very generous. But the most exceptional part is the hosts: Paola and Francesco were incredibly helpful, providing a great introduction to the history of Matera, some wonderful tips for exploring the town and some excellent dining recommendations/ reservations. I cannot recommend Aque Cave too highly. A stay here will help make your Matera visit unforgettable.

Who knew a cave could be so romantic? Yet here it is. If you're visiting Matera you will want to sleep in a cave in the historical district. And if so, then this is a great choice. Run by a brother and sister team, the cave is beautifully, minimally updated, with cool comfort, a good night's sleep, and solid internet if you need it. The hosts are kind, organized, and very helpful. Couldn't ask for better.

The Aque Cave is a fantastic small hotel (4 rooms). The level of care put into every single detail of the hotel leaves a lasting impression. The service is attentive and the breakfast was delicious. The hosts Paola and Francisco are knowledgeable about the history of the area, the food, and the community. They are passionate about others coming to understand the important history in Matera, and their five year restoration of their caves has created a magical hotel. Their restaurant recommendations were the perfect fit for us, and they helped us details as varied at selecting a parking lot to tracking down a lost scarf. We had such a wonderful experience in this hotel and you will too.

If it were not for the location, for the strategic position characterized by a panoramic view (especially in the evening), to be a few steps from the main street of Sasso Caveoso, starting point for the most characteristic part of Matera, for the typicality of the room (in our case the one called Talia), I would have given an even lower score because against the 260 euros per night the services left something to be desired. I can understand the excitement of illustrating to the newcomers the characteristics of Matera: the monuments, the restaurants, the routes to do .. but you can not keep for 15 minutes waiting who after traveling 600 kilometers, arrived around noon with 30 degrees outside and where the only thought is “... but this room is there? is it ready or not? “ In fact the room was not ready (it was enough to say it right away) ... at least before we were worried about going immediately in search of a place to have lunch! Afternoon room ready: everything as in the photos, but... usually on the table as a welcome you expect a bottle of water (corked) as befits in these cases and not a carafe with an open neck where dust was deposited on the surface of the water maybe those of the tuff walls. On the table only a cardboard with four lines in other languages: not a brochure, a sheet in Italian (yet we are in Matera and I am not ashamed of not knowing other languages) to inform about where, how and various times for all services. The next morning seeing a girl setting an outdoor table we sat down waiting for information for breakfast. After ten minutes of waiting (it was just us) it was decided to enter the reception and only there, peeking down the stairs, we noticed a counter with the courses of breakfast: to know before ... A few more accessories in the room would have been useful (a coat rack, a bench for the suitcase, an extra socket for mobile phones etc.) but given the typicality of the situation we adapted ... but you can not put face towels resting on those for the bidet in a perch: hell, given the space in the bathroom, I would have preferred an extra perch! Last but not least, the thing that made me smile was that attached to the cloth slippers provided to the room, there was a cardboard that bore the warning that in case these were then to fail after the occupants left, they would be charged: but do they recycle them? To avoid taking the risk we didn't even use them...you want them already used...!

Not only was Aque Cave the best hotel experience my wife and I had during our two weeks in Italy (and maybe ever), it absolutely made our trip to Matera. As soon as we arrived, Paola (who runs the hotel with her brother Francesco) warmly oriented us to the city by recommending sites, restaurants, and fun spots for an aperativo (all of which were fantastic). Her enthusiasm for her city was infectious and made us even more excited to explore. In fact, after talking to Paola we decided to cancel a planned day trip to Puglia so we could spend more time in stunningly beautiful Matera!
Our room was extremely comfortable, especially for a cave stay. It may have been our most comfortable room in Italy! Breakfast was delicious and provided another opportunity to chat with Paola and learn more about Matera. Both Paola and Francesco repeatedly offered to help us with things like reservations, tickets, and even doing a little laundry. I really can’t recommend Aque Cave highly enough. It’s perfect in every way.

We spent a long weekend in Matera, we chose this hotel as from the pictures the rooms looked simply amazing and we wanted to have a proper sleeping in a cave experience. We were not disappointed, the room was AMAZING, it felt like magic! Aque cave is in the middle of Sasso Caveoso, with amazing views over the Sassi, you can reach everything by foot of course. The hotel is run by Paola and Francesco, two lovely people. They gave us tons of advices on how to get the best out of our stay (try every restaurant they recommend, honestly!!!), they made us feel at home. We’ll definitely be back :) thank you guys!

Aque Cave was the most unique hotel I've ever had the opportunity to stay in. The hotel is completely unlike anything I've ever experienced. It was a magical stay for me and my husband. We stayed 2 nights to explore Matera. The hotel is clean, the room we stayed in was spotless. The room had candles on when we arrived and this created such an ambient atmosphere in the cave (room). Breakfast was local produce, lots of choice. Paula was very helpful and took time to tell us some of the history of the hotel and Matera and made great recommendations for us to eat and places to visit. She even booked the restaurants for us. Thank you for such am amazing time! 5 stars for everything, I cant find any fault! Hotel is in the perfect location to explore the sassi

Room Tip: I wouldn't take heels to the sassi. The streets and steps are steep and cobbled. Just a tip 😉

Just incredible! Our cave room was just beautiful with careful attention to every little detail. Memory foam bed for the dog Alfie was unbelievable! Breakfast was typical and delicious. Paola and Francesco were charming professional and so very helpful, even introducing us to delicious cakes. Wishing them every success in all they do ❤️

The city of Matera is unbelievable to see but more importantly this hotel is second to none. Paola and Francesco are the perfect hosts. They are friendly, helpful and most importantly love what they are doing and it shows in how wonderfully you are treated. As for the hotel, you will probably never stay in such a unique place. They have restored it with the utmost care and attention to detail. The breakfast was wonderful. If you ever get a chance to stay here don’t pass it up, you won’t be disappointed.

Aqua Cave is one of the most magical places we have ever had the opportunity to sleep in. Everything was wonderful. Despite the enormous heat outside, it was wonderfully cool inside the suite, and the pleasant smell of the aroma diffusers and lit candles created a unique atmosphere. The wonderful hosts Paola and Francesco were the perfect complement to the whole experience. Very tasty breakfasts and perfect location. What more could you want? The only thing we didn't like was that we had to leave the place after two days :)
